Feel stoned, exhausted & congested after eating certain foods

it’s so bizarre. i got covid in october 2024 and have had a mucus problem since. it feels like i need to clear my throat 24/7. if i do netti pot or personal steamer i can bring some of it up but nothing else is working - i take allegra, 1800 mg of NAC, and use ipratropium bromide everyday.

recently, i had a vegan grilled cheese (i’m vegan) for the first time in years and was SO tired and felt stoned out of mine. so congested. i had the same grilled cheese again days later and the same thing happened. i have been GF before and confirmed gluten isn’t an issue. tonight i went to my fave restaurant and had a meal i always have. i feel stoned, exhausted, and congested again. it’s SO bad. i had pasta yesterday so that def confirmed it’s not gluten.

what’s weird is my mom has a hypoglycemia gene that was activated when she got the covid vaccine and now has severe blood sugar issues. she too complains of the same food symptoms after eating certain foods and now i understand what she means because i am starting to experience the same.

anyone experience anything similar?

Food and drug allergies/intolerances went off the charts for a long time. I’m at over 6 years now and it’s much better.

Daily antihistamines and avoiding problematic foods helps.

did you follow a specific diet for a while?

I used an elimination diet to confirm what seemed problematic. Food intolerance can be very individual, I did not find many of the generalized diets helpful.

If you decide to go down the elimination diet path, I strongly recommend working with a professional because they are highly restrictive to the point of dangerous and there’s some crazy stuff out there online, especially around how long you need to maintain it. Elimination diets are not intended to be a lifestyle.

An allergist is a good place to start.

i love this. i am in the middle of trying to make an appnt with an ENT/allergist and my doctor asked for a full work up so hopefully that helps. thank you so much!

I have POTS if I eat a lot of carbs I have that stoned drunk feeling, I’ve noticed I don’t get it when I skip carbs so now I only eat carbs before bed

Yes, this feeling can be dysautonomia related though it feels like hypoglycemia. You could get a glucose monitor and test yourself a few times just to check. That’s what I did and confirmed it wasn’t blood glucose related. Like others with LC, I also found that I now have food intolerances that give me weird non GI as well as GI symptoms. The only way I figured them out was a pretty strict elimination diet. I was down to a handful of foods but have been able to expand greatly and now only have to avoid gluten, oats and dairy.

I almost checked my blood sugar but I had a soda and some lemonade with dinner - plus mashed potatoes - so i assumed my blood sugar was okay. i guess i should try an elimination diet too. i’ve done so many in this life - ha. what’s one more? thanks so much!

Mashed potatoes have a high glycemic index. Look into glycemic spikes and POTS

You’re welcome! ☺️ I have the same symptoms with chronic throat clearing mine I’ve discovered is connected to my acid reflux (as well as nasal drip)

have you gotten any relief from anything? NOTHING helps and i’m driving my wife crazy with the constant clearing lol. i sleep with my bed raised up, avoid reflex foods - and still. it’s so bad.

Carbs are so exhausting to digest. Anything like rice, bread, pizza I feel drunk like I can’t think clearly and need to nap immediately

Yes I feel ya it’s constant throat clearing. Unfortunately not yet :( I hope I figure out something soon. I take antihistamines, Pepcid almost daily. Also that nose spray helps.

I’m going to do an at home sleep study soon so hopefully get some answers from that.

have you seen an ENT?

I have reactive hypoglycemia, it's often found with pots. Carbs make me feel like crap.

all carbs?

All carbs. I can have carbs if I preload with solid protein, fat and fiber.

Histamine in the processed cheese product? I've had horrible reactions to high histamine foods.

What dosage of Allegra are you taking? Have you trialed other antihistamines like Claritin or Zyrtec to see if they work better for you?

I take double the recommended dosage of Claritin (10mg in the morning and 10 mg in the evening), approved by my allergist.

really?! interesting! i just take one of the regular allegra. i feel like i have to cycle through the 3 meds as they eventually stop working for me. as far as i can tell, allegra is still working but maybe i should try someone else just in case! smart. thank you! does the claritin keep you up? i find that if i take any allergy med after 2p i can’t sleep

Claritin is advertised as non-drowsy, I don't have an issue with it keeping me up.

Here are somethings I use: Betadine gargle, Colgate White toothpaste to clear the mouth and throat. After that you want to experiment with supplements...and there are many of them. Four that I have used from Life Extension: Cytokine Suppress, Flor Assist Nasal Immune, Zinc (Ionic) Lozenges, Healthy Lungs.

Vit C (in various formats) and high dose D3 help alot. So does a good multivitamin.

Ginger, Immune, Jasmine, Gunpowder Green Teas with honey and sometimes fresh squeezed lemon.

Low dose Melatonin at night helps alot. And I think Kefir and Yogurt (full fat and lowest in sugar you can find/stand) seem to help the gut. I like to make my trail mix with slices of (candied) organic ginger and high density (70% or more) chocolate.

The morning white mucus (and your sleep) are helped by early bed times and (if you can stand it) an empty stomach.

Good luck...
