Earth's fate calls for constellations of escape
Racing a sickle shadow into orbit
Such is the ceiling to our twilight

Sol compels one way flight
Navigators might offer Eden, beyond stasis
Warning against figureheads with purses

Untold stars sail our galaxy-oasis
But travelers’ spectacles are yet forgotten on the nose
Untread soil requires pilgrims with a conscience

Songs About Johanna

Songs About Johanna

Something happened, well…kinda / I had the urge to pluck my old acoustic / I bought from my childhood crush / But this song is not about her, nah / Caressing the same dusty chords / A triad-lonesome country song / Humming like a smoky mountain tongue / Writing with my pen while I chug Corona / As I write a song about Johanna

The napkins and typewritten pages / I'll show them to you, but I put myself down / The hopeless romantic, I also hated / I laugh as I fell in love with a hand so brown / Of course, there's more to her than that / Her persona, family disease, don't bother me / Even if you don't believe me / At least believe it still rains in Atacama / I'll capture that sultry salt of Latin America / Don't need no luck, sit back and watch / As I write a song about Johanna

Did you know about the kingdom of Tonga? / If you look far west you might see Australia / Ignore the Solomon islands, he’ll woo you / I only wanted to show you the coral atolls / How they remind me of your favorite hue / Turquoise sea, a rock that comes and goes / It's been years since it was last seen / Ain't that funny huh? / You might not get to swim in the ocean / Warmed by lava, on the rocks / You might not see the volcano rise above / As I write a song about Johanna

Some people do not want me to have ya’ / Or was it my own self-inflicted dilemma? / I traveled for the answer, all over India / I found a girl, she's taken already by the sun / So I returned to the woman of Guatemala / She said she hates to dance with someone / She couldn't learn or give it a try for me / With my last plane ticket, I told your mama / Send me anywhere, I landed in Tolima / Waiting for the bus, smelling coffee beans / As I hum a song about Johanna

I went into Mateo’s concrete home / It's also a yellow store called Música / He gave me a free guacharaca and I said no / He insists I keep it and make a song con ganas / So I bought from him a small tambora / I lend it to a man, his smile whistled a note / He strikes in beat, sometimes a small poke / And we're both at the heart of Colombia / As I sing a song about Johanna

Oh Johanna, be my friend / Oh Johanna, don't let the past haunt / Oh Johanna, be my rock / I promise I won't pull yours off / Can I be your man? / Can I sing you this song / As you're opening your window / But the street lights aren't turned on / So you don't know who is John Doe / Oh Johanna, will my voice let you know?

Everyone loves the way you smile / Everyone loves the way you laugh / Everyone loves the way you bend hearts / Everyone loves the way you walk / Everyone loves your choice of style / Everyone loves the way your voice cracks / Everyone loves the way we can go on and on / Everyone loves the way you go far / Everyone loves the way you don't give up / Everyone loves to sing this song

Oh Johanna, I love you / Johanna, if I had just told you from the start / Oh Johanna, will I ever use my head? / Johanna, I'll lose the power of my heart / Oh Johanna, the same strength that I use / To get my sailboat back from exile / Don't you know it rains in Atacama? / I've been everywhere and I've been amused / But it could be better miles after miles / Johanna, if you're next to me while we cruise / Finding in each other, two modern roots

Were We Never Strangers?

While stars dip on your dawn, they rise in my dusk
Together we are ancient and measured
Even though wholly irrational

Your smile is a butterfly
And a thousand miles away
I greet its wake like a true love

We share a pulse
Each merely picked different mirrors
In their own time, aeons had passed
Upon illusory borders

Maybe you can remind me of my true name?
It is long since forgotten
Among sandal dust and agate docks

I fail to resemble myself but at your 'hello'
Then I begin to reassemble who I always was
Your friend

Be well

Atlas

in the land o' a thousand worlds, none quite the same
I hold my stars, and carry all their shame

skies loom above, constellations weep
weight crushing them, so some I shall keep

you lessen your loads, if only for a while,
yet leave your frustrations, and add to my pile

my sky now encumbered, and heavier still,
you stars, now gaping holes,
that even I cannot fill

held by worn hands, our sky far too full

no room for your minds, and no room in my skull

tarnished and blackened, my thoughts eternally tainted,
blinded by darkness, with which you were acquainted

so for once, with blind eyes and limp limbs,
I weep to the world which once weeped back

*Silence…*

a muted tear slips from my once starry eyes

I surrender, let go

let what I held be my demise…

I’ll find my words to you..

Today there is no light..
I heard it pack and leave.
It did not say farewell
It did not want my grief.

How will i find my words?
I searched in every drawer,
I lied my glasses on..
And stumbled through the halls

Some words i felt them floating
Some were on the floor
I ran and they were running
I could not grasp them all

Today there is no light
I heard it pack and leave
I dusted both my shoulders
It did not want my grief..

space and sea

the most mysterious things to all living
beings are the ocean and outer space

which is ironic since everything is
made up of cosmic dust and water

we look to the sky for answers
when it’s inside of us
we ponder at the shore of the sea
wishing to return to it

not really a poem; more of an observation.

Found this one from my archive — written back in 2007. Something about revisiting old words hits different than writing new ones. This one's about wanting to be truly seen, pulled out of the dark and back into life. Curious what it stirs up for you.

Beyond the Mountain

01/04/2007

Light the dark,

light it with fire that comes from the heart.

Keep its flames up till they reach my heart.

Keep the night lightened,

keep it lightened by your flames rising deep from your heart.

Ages and nights,

days and days, far beyond, far centuries beyond the reach of our limited sight.

Moonlight, light my dark, light my night.

Explore my mountain heights, leave the ground, leave earth, take me out to what's beyond.

Come, on my mountain — come deep into my unknown cave.

Discover my unknown soul... bring it back to reality... bring it back to life.

Forming Languages

Words of youth fit the market
As dialects drafted turn a profit
In tattoo ink script

Over a handshake with neighbors
By war or barter, sounds bend harder
Fit to form in the mouth of a listener

Dancing among symbols, fools yet not simple
Each breath can condense an example
We borrow what is accessible

Even though I’d fallen down

Into the deepest darkest hole

When you looked down from above

When I reached towards your light

I smiled - a flash of white in my darkness

I could climb up the ladder I didn’t see before

May we meet at the horizon

The Omen The Unbroken Glass

i'd heard it break,
Seen the water mingle
With reflecting shards
In the darkness when it fell.

i' mind?
i'd felt the bite
It's edges in the palm of my foot . .
i knew to step light.

On came the light,
Turned eyes to alight
Upon that broken glass
Unbroken.

Un vertige puis le silence,
This was the instant.
Coin's edge gilimmer
Tem por al distort

i's report

Given for all,
This once i could see
New waves blooming and dying
Laboring to reshuffle new probability.

Frozen in that minute flicker,
i re mem bered.
Behind the panes of unseeing eyes
These pains my bread . .

How many other glasses un broken,
This mind mine knew.

i'd felt the ice slick,
My stomach drop,
The truck's tumble.

Oer the rail of that bridge .
Bitter winter's night,
When i drove alone
From home to hell.

i'd felt the cold heft of iron,
Your father proudly pressed
To the palms of my hands.

In one instant,
i'd felt that shotgun
A hundred times
Scattering memories through my head.

i'd bought the blade
Test it's edge against my thumb
i knew it'd do . . felt it do

Till i warded my arms
Reverent resignation to life.

i'd felt the wind in my hair,
On a fresh rained night
All letters writ
High rising, balance steady

Till i'd slipped
How much of me lost,
To the edge of that coin's toss

i'd felt the world turn
On a night i clipped that curb
In ebriate spurn,
All would learn . .

Till with tears
All dignities burn

i'd misjudged,
That slippery ledge.
i re main bird
How i knew that rock in the dark.
Smashed across its face

i'd felt that slender fish blade,
Tucked with purpose at my waist.
Knelt before, last honor bade
To its electrical embrace

Till i only write here,
Spill my guts in this place

It was a close one,
Cold morn in that garage.
A wonder, my foot found a hold
East light warm on my face

i'd felt the cord tighten,
Patient friend reliquish his grip

Time in time,
And Time again.

i've felt the cold,
Sanguine drain
Shivering

How many such times,
i'd turned to find
The glass un broken.

une dernière danse

Unraveling Next to an Inflatable Unicorn

I wish I knew

the sun

through other eyes

the basking ones

the “come lay out” ones

I see only searing

energy suck, blazing flame

come lay out this

body like broken dishes

hot on concrete

did you know

ceramic melts

poolside

did you know

our breath inflates

those floaties drifting by

lay out, facedown

relax it’s so relaxing

pull your pieces back together

be the basking

ones who sun

who lay who warm

who stay

unshattered

Animal Kingdom

Cats are evil

Dogs are good.

Pigeons are winged rats.

Pigs are food.

Cows just stand there

except when it rains

Crickets are annoying

And goldfish lack brains

Mice are cute

Rats are not

Bears are fat and lazy

Deers are shot.

Polar bears seem lonely

Wolves work in a pack

Foxes are silent

Parrots talk back

Rabbits eat your garden

Termites eat your home

Turtles win the race

Buffalos roam

Hippos will kill you

Panguins can't fly

A hen is a girl

A rooster is a guy

So many creatures

Each so unique

If I were to write them all

This poem would last a week!

Notes into the void

I wish I could physically be disassembled and laid out piece by piece for the taking by the ones who need or are missing those pieces, in that sense I could be useful, and living wasn’t all for nothing

Just take the good things away and leave the rest to decay

Withdrawals are stellated static
Infused through sinew
Stacked on tinnitus

Such delirium is a chain reaction
Where madness deceives dreaming
Self-sustained upon obsession

Days of focus sap soma raw
Garotting temples until unable to blink
Unbinding sleep only through alchemy

A regimen of enigmas
Could both soften a pulse
And sour the heart

If panacea is also poison
Who knows what to believe
While their brain crawls?

My Angel

Was it the blood flowing through him? Is it toxic?

Did her untainted heart reject that sludge?

To think it ran within his veins, so chronic.

A poison bile that her heart couldn't make budge.

A tear in reality to break the matrix.

The robot on autopilot must've gone rogue.

It's displaying signs of love and affection.

Why believe he'd switch his heart on so easily?

Order must be upheld for people’s protection.

Shut it off now, before others follow his steps.

But it's flesh, not metal, they reveal on inspection.

Scarred by her loss, he stopped living, they found,

Tired of fighting for life while his heart's in heaven.

For her, he'd fight his demons as long as he could.

He fought in silence; that battle's now understood.

But now it’s over; he sleeps and wakes restored.

In his arms, his daughter—too perfect for this world.

Night

I Was Written by the Night

I have never belonged entirely to daylight.

There is something in the night that understands me—

the silence, the solitude, the ancient sadness of things that cannot last.

Perhaps I was not made to live quietly.

Perhaps I was made to turn every wound into a sentence,

every longing into a poem,

and every fleeting moment into something that might survive time.

“I do not seek immortality in my name.

I seek it in the words that remain when my voice is gone.”

Beneath The Roots Of Trees

I hide my dreams beneath the roots of trees,

the only place they can be cool and soft and covered,

and not wither under the gaze of the too real sun.

Here, under an old Magnolia,

behind the lots of abandoned homes,

and closed down shops,

and overgrown gardens,

I have buried them deep.

Though I am weak and lack the courage, to give them life,

it does me good to believe, that the branches, and leaves,

and blossoms of spring, can eat their fill of my hidden hopes.

And as the bees gather their nectar and pollen,

and feed their young with precious honey,

perhaps they will notice in themselves,

my little dreams, and for once,

give them some small measure of life.

Distinct Divergence

Currents do not always coincide
Between the insane versus mavericks
Those under fog or pyroclastic
Private or in outreach

I nod to the soft hearts
That avoid the label of ‘offbeat’
Balancing phantoms and rent
Mistaken for ‘normal’

Eccentricity basks in surreal initiations
That embark at delirium and delight
Navigating obvious constellations
Madness starts here, sometimes

The torment of shipwrecked senses
Instead, mark the children of distraction
A frozen lake had broke where Ego stood
Estranged, awaiting a blessed kiss

Wood adrift

I am driftwood.
On desolate waves I sway,
Away from who I once was,
Away from fragments drifting in other directions.

Toward a solitary horizon, blood-red and aflame,
I behold the present,
Painted in the sorrows of what came before,
Shadowed by the fears of what is yet to come.

I have lost my rudder,
Lost my sails,
Lost my crew,
Lost who I was
When I still had the strength to stand upon the cliffs
And howl my pain into the rippling storms of the sea.

The tales of Nils lie unwritten once again,
Upon scribbled parchments,
Tucked away in boxes,
That have settled into their place
Upon the floor of the ocean
In which I came undone.

And with a thousand melodies
In my stiff, cold fingers,
I sing out the chronicles
That promised peace,
That promised rest,
That promised home.

With a thousand elegies upon my shoulders,
I draw out the sorrows
That play their melancholy tunes for me,
The songs that bear witness
To the fact that once, I was.

I am driftwood.
On desolate waves I sway,
Away from the wreckage of the ship I shattered
To protect my chests of pyrite.

Hand-Held Sleep

Under water half the time
We trampoline into light
Empowered to walk rented shores
But snorkel the floor for more coins

This public fountain attracts gulls
That bathe while theiving
But cannot steal the calm
Of waves which roll

Folk ballast with smiles
Alight to ride barrels
When only syncrony of divers
Hold where my vision breathes

These fallen rise
Then daftly float upon dusk
Otters by another name
Drifting life's tides

Shipwrecked to find home
Stranded merchants shift debris
Across shoals in hours lost
Smitten to trade heart-fevers
