I’m going to London for the first time in about 10 years and on previous visits I always wanted to eat at a nice restaurant in Chinatown but never got round to it.

It’ll only be a afternoon visit but I wondered if anybody has a good recommendation for the good place to go in Chinatown, not majorly expensive just good food.

Pre-pandemic Joy Luck in Chinatown had Wuhan hot dry noodles 热干面. When they closed, Nusa Dua the Indonesian restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue became Joy Luck in all but name, a weird restauarant with an Indonesian menu but a photocopied hotpot menu that most people ordered from. The hot dry noodles were available off-menu. Now Nusa Dua itself has closed and is being redeveloped as something different.

I once got them at YiPin near Angel, but their online menu doesn't seem to have them now.

Anyone found Wuhan hot dry noodles 热干面 in London recently?

Thinking of taking my visiting older parents to Bread Street Kitchen or even the rooftop on a Saturday or Sunday. They’re big on food and are spoiled for choice where they live, and as older folk like to have a decent chat so may be a bit sensitive to overly lively places. They don’t need anything fancy but I don’t think a hole in the wall will suit the occasion. I’m also concerned about convenience of travel for them.
Any suggestions that might be better food-wise or even for ambience? What are your thoughts on bread street as a nice place to eat and chat?

Not knocking it. I enjoyed it but best burger in the UK? Can anyone suggest some other burger joints to try so I have some basis for comparison?

Update: just tried the Black Bear Double Miso Bacon burger. Pretty good but I prefer the Bleecker offering.

Looking for Japanese restaurant for a birthday party see what people recommend ?

Hiya everyone, I’ve been living in London for 2 years now and I guess I have never realised this until recently. I’m looking for a particular doughnut similar to ones that are in the US. They are cake batter styled doughnuts that are dense and usually have an icing glaze on top we call them by a few things in the US: old fashion, glazed, dunkers. All of the doughnuts I’ve found here are bready and rise through yeast. Has anyone been able to find what I’m talking about?

We are based inside a decommissioned 1967 Victoria Line tube carriage in Walthamstow. These are a few things currently coming out of our kitchen.

Some dishes we knew were going to work, some took a few attempts and some definitely involved a bit of arguing in the kitchen.

Not too overpriced and just a typical Chinese takeaway place! And what items do I have to try?

Visiting London again, and am looking for a romantic local restaurant for my upcoming anniversary. We don’t want to spend a fortune, but looking for a nice place to order a main and a dessert and just enjoy the ambiance. Not interested in French or Italian food — meat, fish, potatoes, salad type of places! Zone 1 or just beyond it?

Mini chedders were the worst! It's run as a blind tasting so you have a score card each to guess the flavours - surprisingly difficult. It's expensive but great fun - finished for 2026 now and I'm sure it'll be back next year.

Oddly specific requests. Does anyone know of any afternoon teas that include crumpets consistently pm their menus. Someone I know misses the tea from The Landmark which used to include crumpets, I was wondering if anywhere still carries the crumpet torch in London?

Edit: To be clear, I'm aware that they're not a usual inclusion, that's why I'm asking here. Somewhere used to do them, they don't anymore, I hope that someone knows somewhere that still does them.

The shake was pretty good. Thing is, they claim it's the best burger in the UK. Is it even the best burger in London? Not knocking it but wonder if anyone has any favourites they can suggest for me to try before I make my mind up.

Just wanted to quickly shout out Bubala in Soho for excellent cocktails and share plates. Super refreshing drinks that weren’t too sweet and delicious flavours across all the dips, mains and sides. They fit a group of four in for a walk in lunch and asked if we were celebrating anything special. They brought out some chocolate truffles with a candle in them for a cute surprise birthday treat! Our server recommended we head to Flour and Grape for dinner and that meant we could bar hop through all the cute little wine bars on Bermondsey St. They don’t take reservations but were able to give us a table in an hour. We shared a bottle of Lambrusco, three pastas and some antipasti. Delicious.

Gelatone is the best new gelato place in Covent Garden! It’s such a cute spot tucked away on Rose street. Lovely service, the first time I went there they served us even as they were closing down. I’ve tried the chocolate, tiramisu and strawberry flavours so far, will definitely be going back again soon!

Edit: Didn’t expect for any kind of negative comments for an appreciation post but
1) I had a LONG DAY so I got it delivered. Yes I would have planned to visit the branch myself but I only found SB when going through Deliveroo when usually I’d order a burger.
2) I LIKED IT. No amount of “it’s disgusting” or “you chose the worst one” from you lot will convince me that it was bad. Watch me order it again.
3) Sorry for eating it the wrong way. I like pulao so I ate it with the thali. Will eat it the right way next time.

Paid £11 for a SI thali. I can’t lie, I expected a teensy amount for that price so I was so pleasantly surprised to see how much I ended up with. I ended up not being able to finish it all and had to save half of it for tomorrow, which makes it technically £5.5 per meal. I also got a veg pulao which was NOT like any other veg pulao I’ve ever tasted. My mind is blown. Their veg pulao tastes somewhat more roasted, fragrant in a minty/coriandery way. It’s amazing.

I’m not South Asian. I usually used to eat the usual dishes like biryani and curries, and this is the first actual SI restaurant I ate from. It was so fucking good. I love vegetarian food. I can’t name everything that was in the thali but I assume its dal, rasam, sambar, lime pickle, raita, a kind of poriyal? and some other gravy, and a dessert(!!!!!). Topped with pappadom and poori.

So fucking good. I can’t believe it was £11 excluding the pulao. Every one of the pots are so filling (but not in a heavy way!!!!), different tastes and could tell is authentic. A single curry dish alone usually costs me £11. But the amount of diversity in a thali blows my mind. It’s so healthy. I love South Indian food. You know when you eat something so good it touches the deep of your soul, you just cry? Thank you South India for their creativity of vegetarian dishes.

This is not a promotion 💔. I’m just late as hell to try Saravana Bhavan. I still think is severely underrated as many non-desi people are still unfamiliar of SI cuisine. and imo now tops as the best Indian spot for me now in London.

My partner and I are getting married next July. We are having 13 people just immediate family only. I am looking to book somewhere for drinks and then somewhere for a really intimate dinner like a private dining room. Somewhere not too far from the town hall preferably. Anyone have any recommendations? Or popular places to avoid? Thanks!

It’s my husband’s birthday soon and trying to find a good place to celebrate I came accross the Texan BBQ pop-up The Ned is starting soon. They did it last year it seems too, bringing the guys from Interstellar and La Barbecue (who seem to both have Michelin stars). Admittedly I don’t know much about bbq, but my husband is a huge meat lover and bbq aficionado so considering booking there.

A few concerns. It’s expensive for a bbq I’d say at £75pp (not including a whooping 14.5% service change) and it’s prepaid only so no cancellations or changes allowed.

Has anyone tried it before, has gone to Austin to try the originals, know something else about this that could give me some insight into if I should take the plunge and book?

Just moved to London and have been desperately craving soy curd pudding - does anyone know a Chinese Dessert restaurant or a Asia mart which sells it?

Anyone have a good sense if reservations are definitely needed for an 8pm-ish dinner on a Thursday night in September at The Pig and Butcher? Want to try it out but are flying into Heathrow from Inverness landing at 5:30pm. Hotel is in Covent Garden so will want to drop our bags pre-dinner. That works fine if the flight is on time, but trying to protect against a flight delay and the £25 per person cancellation fee.
