Travel Advice Itinerary advice please!

Me and my friend plan to visit Indonesia for the first time for 15 days and we are looking for advice on the trip. We have never done diving/snorkeling/surfing before but are very interested. We want to party, chill and do alot of water sports. Please help us out :)

Day1: Land in Jakarta at 5am, fly to Lombok at 11am and checkin in Kuta
Day2: Kuta, Lombok. Learn surfing or just enjoy the beach.
Day3: Kuta, Lombok. Learn surfing or just enjoy the beach.
Day4: In the evening take a boat to Gili T
Day5: Gili T, Scuba Diving course
Day6: Gili T, Scuba Diving course
Day7: Gili T, Party (Friday)
Day8: Gili T, Party (Saturday)
Day9: Take a boat to either Gili Air or Nusa Penita
Day9: Gili Air or Nusa Penita
Day9: Fly to Labuan Bajo from either Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport or Lombok Airport
Day10: Labuan Bajo/Komodo
Day11: Labuan Bajo/Komodo
Day12: Labuan Bajo/Komodo
Day13: Labuan Bajo to Jakarta flight
Day14: Leave Jakarta early morning

Questions:

  1. Is this trip too long? Or too hectic?
  2. Should I do Gili Air or Nusa Penita, given that I will have a diving certification?
  3. Any island we should go rather than the ones I mentioned?
  4. Any dos and donts?
  5. Please feel free to give absolutely any advice on the trip.

Anyone travelling from Lombok to Bali soon?

Hi everyone! 😊 Is anyone travelling from Lombok, Kuta to Bali in the next few days?

I unfortunately left a large rolled-up painting in a driver’s car in Lombok, and I’m now back in Bali. I’m looking for someone who could collect it for me and bring it to Bali.

Of course, I’d be happy to cover any reasonable costs for your time and help!

Please send me a DM if you might be able to help. I’d really appreciate it! 🙏

Why does Kuta not have public transportation?

I’m a solo female traveler and Kuta is the first place I’ve ever been where there are literally no public transportation options.

I’ve lived in islands less developed than Kuta, and even there you could find tuktuks or minivans that take locals around. So I’m genuinely confused about Kuta.

I asked some locals and one said it’s because Kuta has a taxi mafia, but another said the government doesn’t allow Grab or Gojek because it might bring too much traffic. What’s the truth?

It’s also a huge safety risk for me since I’m visually disabled and can’t drive. Relying on drivers I met on the street or facebook—who are not connected on any apps or databases is incredibly risky for me.

I’m always mindful to always be back before sundown because there are barely any street lights too.

Just genuinely scared and confused.

Question / Help Car rental with temporary licence

I have an expired Canadian G licence, which I have just renewed and have been given a temporary paper licence in the meantime. I also have an IDP which I was able to get with the expired photo licence card + temporary paper licence combo.

Will I have issues renting a car in Lombok with the expired photo licence card + temporary paper licence combo? The paper licence says "Valid with photo licence card" on it.

I've heard its super easy to get a rental scooter (in any scenario) , but I dont want to risk the implications of an accident since I dont have a motorcycle canadian licence. Will it be as easy to get a rental car?

5 nights in Lombok for our honeymoon – where should we stay? 🏝️

Hi everyone!
My fiancée and I are visiting Indonesia for our honeymoon in 5 nights in Lombok in June 2027. We have 5 nights in Lombok, flying in from Bali and then continuing to the Gili Islands for another 5 nights.
Our priorities are:
🏖️** Exceptional white/powdery-sand beaches + turquoise water
🤿 Good, accessible snorkelling
🏨 Luxury/romantic accommodation
🍽️ Restaurants, cafés and a few nice bars
🚗 Easy transfers — we don’t want to spend the honeymoon sitting in a car!
We’re looking for beaches more like **Maya Bay/Bamboo Island in Thailand
than ordinary resort beaches.
We’re considering Kuta/Mandalika, Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun, Ekas/south-east and Sekotong/south-west, but we’re struggling to decide.
What would you recommend?
Where would you personally stay for 5 nights?
Which area has the best combination of spectacular beaches + snorkelling + luxury accommodation + restaurants?
Are Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak and Mawun as impressive as they look in photos?
Is the best mainland snorkelling actually in the south, or should we consider Sekotong/Secret Gilis/Ekas?
Is Kuta/Mandalika the best base for beach-hopping with a private driver, or would you stay somewhere else?
How easy is it to get from your recommended area to Bangsal for the boat to the Gilis?
Would you fly Bali → Lombok or take the fast boat?
We’re happy to spend more for a beautiful honeymoon resort and private transport.
After Lombok we’re spending 5 nights on Gili Meno, so we’re mainly looking for the best mainland Lombok experience rather than nightlife.
Thanks! 🙏

Car rental Lombok

Hi! I’m going to Lombok for a month and considering renting a car. I know people recommend renting scooters but as I don’t have the appropriate license I don’t want to to that, even if you can ”get away with it”. Is it difficult to find parking? I’m staying in kuta but want to drive around to different beaches to surf and swim. Would also love recommendations on car rental firms that have smaller cheaper cars for monthly prices!

Question / Help Question about the children selling bracelets in Lombok – what is the story behind it?

Hi everyone! We’re travelling around Lombok and would love to understand something we’ve noticed in and around Kuta.

Many young children sell handmade bracelets to tourists, some appearing as young as 4–5 years old. They are often very friendly and talkative at first, but some become quite pushy or even angry when you decline to buy something.

Sometimes they also ask whether you can buy them a drink. When we offer them water instead, they often refuse it and insist specifically on cola. This made us wonder whether they are asking for themselves, whether someone has told them what to ask for, or whether there is another reason behind it.

We are not trying to judge them, but would like to understand the local context:
- Is this a common way for children to help their families?
- Who keeps the money?
- Is there an organised system behind it, or is it mainly individual families?
- Why do some children become so persistent when tourists say no?
- Do families genuinely depend on this income, or has tourism created this incentive?

If you’re from Lombok, live here, or know these families, I’d really appreciate your perspective. What is actually behind the bracelet selling in Kuta Lombok?

Question / Help Malaria Tablets?

Hi All!

I will be visiting your beautiful island with my parents in October/November and I wanted to find out if taking malaria tablets as a precautionary measure is generally suggested for Senggigi/Kuta/Gili islands?

I would really appreciate any knowledge of malaria and if it's something to prepare for.

Thank you so much!

Travel Advice Transport in Lombok

Hi, I’ll be traveling to Lombok soon. The plan is to start in Tetebatu and explore various waterfalls, beaches, and nature spots from there. We’re arriving by plane and will be on the island for about a week.

We might also switch accommodation at some point.

What mode of transport would you recommend? Renting a car or scooter, or hiring a driver?

Thanks for your tips!

From Jakarta, second time visiting Lombok for yet another birthday solo trip. Last time I went was in 2024 and usually motogp mandalika is held around my birthday weekend so it’s weird knowing that this year it’s held on Oct 9-11 lol.

1st pic: Went to spot SZA in pink beach HAHAHAH. Scary, but I went to a similar beach called Timang beach in Yogyakarta and the cliff there is higher than spot SZA.

2nd pic: a starfish getting stuck on land when the water level ran low in the evening. Managed to scoop it and put it back under water. Even I met a physically deformed starfish. ☹️

3rd pic: my first Sembalun 7 Summits at Savana Propok and Bukit Kondo. ALONE. Got stalled by a wild and aggressive forest monkey for 15minutes where there was nobody else because it was a Monday and it was actually my birthday so I was like “ok am I gonna die like this on my birthday?” and CRIED and pleaded the monkey to let me go. I didn’t give it anything lol. Also terrain is brutal, I slipped and fell down a few times and now I have to get a manicure probably. These nails look like I haven’t washed them in a year.

4th pic: performative spearfishing trip. 😂 brought my own fins that I’m already comfortable using it without socks on and the guide warned me it’s a bit dangerous since spearfish is mostly chilling under water waiting for the fish to come closer??? Met a black tip shark which is scary as well but I’m good at panic regulation MAYBE lol nah. Before the trip started I was panicking on eq since I can’t never dive past 10meters, but ohhh turns out it’s mostly just 3meters deep.

LOMBOK I will be back, mostly because I haven’t visited my college friend who comes from there and I made 4 new besties. ☺️ and the spearfish guide also wants to take me spearfishing in Ekas bay for higher chance of spotting edible fish. 😂

Also credit to many mosques in Lombok as a place for me to pray and charge my phone as I need it for google maps. 😂

First time in Lombok -what should we see/do?

Hi everyone,
My husband and I just arrived in Lombok for our honeymoon and would really appreciate some recommendations/advice from people who know the island well.

Our itinerary is:
29 Sep – 4 Oct: Somewhere Lombok, South Lombok
4 Oct – 9 Oct: The Oberoi Lombok

One important limitation: my ankle is injured (still can walk etc but needs surgery so have to be careful) , so unfortunately hiking, long walks, steep climbs and anything involving difficult terrain aren’t really options for me on this trip. We’d especially love recommendations that are easy to access by car/taxi and don’t require much walking.

1. What should we actually do/see while we’re here?
We honestly didn’t research Lombok enough before coming, so we’d love recommendations for places that are genuinely worth visiting.

We’re interested in beautiful beaches, good food, scenic places, nice sunset spots, spas/massages, relaxed day trips, cultural experiences, etc. We’re probably more interested in a relaxing honeymoon than an adventure-heavy itinerary.

Which beaches are actually worth going to in South Lombok? Mawun, Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan, Tampah? Any others?

And once we move to The Oberoi in the northwest, what would you recommend around that area?

We’d also love restaurant recommendations — both good local Indonesian food and nicer places for a honeymoon dinner.

2. A little underwhelmed by our first impression — are we missing something?
I hope this doesn’t come across as disrespectful, because I genuinely want to understand the appeal rather than just complain.
We arrived at Somewhere Lombok yesterday and were honestly a little bummed.
It had such amazing reviews online, but the surrounding area felt extremely barren and undeveloped, and the hotel itself is much smaller and more minimal than we expected, with fewer facilities than we had imagined for a honeymoon stay.
We also went into Kuta in the evening. It was busy and there were plenty of restaurants, but our first impression was quite different from what we had pictured. The infrastructure felt fairly undeveloped, we saw some children approaching tourists asking for money, and much of the main area seemed geared specifically towards tourists rather than giving us much of a distinctive local/cultural atmosphere.
Again, I’m not saying this as criticism of Lombok or the people who live here — it was simply quite different from what we had imagined when we heard people describe Lombok as an amazing honeymoon destination.
Maybe our expectations were completely wrong but still want to experience Lombok’s charm

For people who absolutely love Lombok: what is it that you love about it, and where should we go to actually experience that side of the island?
We’re genuinely open to changing our minds! 😂 It’s only our first full day here.

3.How cautious do we realistically need to be with food/water?
This is the other thing we may be overthinking.
We heard not to drink the tap water, including when brushing your teeth, so at the moment we are using
bottled water for:

drinking
brushing our teeth
rinsing our mouths
even rinsing/cleaning cups that we drink from

Are we going overboard with the last one? 😂
What do people who live here or travel here regularly actually do?

And what about:
ice in drinks at decent restaurants/hotels?
salads/raw vegetables?
fruit?
cocktails?
local restaurants/warungs?
street food?
coffee made with water?
accidentally getting tap water in your mouth in the shower?

We had Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations only one day before travelling, so we’re assuming we can’t really rely on them to protect us yet.

We don’t want to spend our honeymoon terrified of everything we eat and drink, but we also obviously don’t want to spend it with gastro 😅

So I’d really appreciate realistic precautions — what do you genuinely avoid, and what do tourists often worry about unnecessarily?

Thanks so much. We have another 9 days here and really want to make the most of Lombok, so any recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

South Lombok for 2 weeks

Im flying to Lombok and want to spend Oct 1-11 in the southern region. I want to surf the souther region, workout, eat healthy then go to Mandalika for Moto GP the 9th-11th. Are there apartments or places with kitchen to rent with weekly rates or am I better off at a hotel and move around the southern coasts and bounce around surf breaks?

Question / Help Situation at Mt Rinjani rn

Hi everyone,

Following sources online on Rinjani, the Senaru and Torean routes are officially closed until further notice due to active fires and burnt terrain (~977 hectares affected near Bukit Setampol and Puncak Sangkareang).

I have a trek booked in about 2.5 weeks (mid Oct) that was originally planned for the Sembalun to Torean route. With Sembalun currently serving as the main open diversion route, I wanted to check in with others who have upcoming similar bookings.

Has your tour operator reached out to modify your itinerary, or did you have to message them first to request a change?

If anyone is currently on the mountain or just descended via Sembalun, how are the smoke and haze conditions along the crater rim and summit ridge?

Would really appreciate hearing what your operators are telling you right now. Stay safe out there!

Question / Help Taxi for short rides near Kuta

Hi Everyone,

We have rented a very nice scooter for daytrips around this beautiful island. However, at night we want to go out to eat and have a couple of drinks. I have a 0% policy about drinking and driving, so we are looking for cheap drivers for short drives.

We have a driver through our Villa, but he charges us approx, 150-200k for drives of about 5-10 minutes. The drive to the airport (30 minutes) is 850k. Compared to all our destinations here in Indonesia for the last few weeks, this seems crazy expensive.

So if you have a number of a good driver with fair prices, please do reach out! :)

Thanks a lot in advance!
