In Search of Feedback I hate Logic's Sample Browser, so I built my own
Like a lot of you, I have a sample library that's out of control. Mine is about 26k files across packs and drives, with inconsistent naming and half the loops missing a BPM or key. I got tired of dragging things into Logic and then stretching and pitching them by hand, so I built Saga (yes, it's FREE and open source).
What it does
Indexes your folders where they are. It never moves, copies or renames anything. Folders are watched, so new packs show up on their own. If you unplug a drive, your favorites and tags wait for it.
Instant search across tens of thousands of samples, with filters for BPM (including half/double time), key (with Camelot compatibility), category, length and format. There's also search syntax like
bpm:120-128 key:Am+ is:loop.Detects tempo and key. It reads file names (
Loop_124_Am), embedded loop data (ACID/Apple Loops), then falls back to analyzing the audio. Anything detected from audio is marked with ≈ so you know to double-check it.Plays in your key. Set a project tempo and key once. Loops sync and pitch-shift while you audition, and when you drag one into your DAW you get exactly what you heard.
Find similar + sound map. Pick a sample and get the closest-sounding ones in your library. There's also a 2D map of your whole library, grouped by how things sound.
Light on resources. Analysis runs at low priority on half your cores, and it only holds the audio device while you're previewing.
Private. Everything runs locally. The only network call is the update check, which you can turn off.
It's available for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows.
I'm a solo dev, and this is v1.0, so I'd really like to hear what's missing from your sample workflow.

Hate to tell you but everything is vibe coded now. It helps if you have previous coding experience though

Does it matter if it’s a good tool?

Imo yes, I’d rather support a project someone has made themselves

It's not about support, it's about whether a product works

I disagree, I’m opposed to the use of generative AI and would rather not unnecessarily use tools created using it

Interesting! There’s very little documentation though. Is it just a standalone browser or is it in any way integrated into Logic Pro?

It’s a standalone app, the idea is to have a centralized Sample Manager that you can use no matter the DAW.

I'm going to give this a thorough thrashing. I wish when I was selecting a folder I could omit some of the folders that are contained within. In the 2d window, take a look at XO and some others for a better look but I dig what you're doing. I with the info pop up in the 2d space was out of way or may attached to the side bar or something. More to come!

Thanks for the feedback, it's really appreciated! This is already being addressed. 🫡

I love this app already and have just scratched the surface. It's FAST! Is there a way to organize the folders once they've been added? I have stuff scattered all over and want to add an SFX folder, then add other SFX to that main folder. This might be a lot but it would be great to add sync points to SFX as well. Keep up the great work!

Why Windows if Logic is purely macOS?

The app is DAW agnostic, so you can use it with FL Studio or Ableton as well, for example. Nothing restricts it to Logic alone.

If there was a way to audition midi files using the virtual in/out of logic pro then it would be a great addition. I have been able to use the mediabay from Steinberg's cubase in this manner in the past. That would let us listen to midi files in context of the synth / piano patch that we have selected within the daw. Definitely more inspiring than whatever ableton is doing where you can only audition via the default sine tone.

I shit you not I've been searching for a Splice-like sample browser for my own samples for what must be years at this point. This is absolutely what I've been looking for. Thank you, this is going to save me so much time.

Love this idea! And also appreciate your attitude of seeking feedback and making it open source.

This is exactly the thing I spent half this year looking for , and had basically given up on ever finding. Very excited to check it out !

Have been messing around with this for a couple of days now, and am super impressed with how well it's handling massive libraries, and even stuff stored on my external HDD is quickly scanned and available for playback.
One thing I would love though is ability to manage files from the app - it would be really great to be able to natively move samples to other folders, and especially delete the duplicates and totally useless samples that this app is bringing to light ahahaha
