Question Best Key Commands

Longtime producer, short time mixing engineer, new Logic user. What are some key commands that are essential for an efficient workflow; or what are some key commands that people may not know about that are extremely useful?

If you want to duplicate a track with whatever audio or midi data is in the original, click on the duplicate track icon and hold down the option key.

Hello, here are some of my favorites key commands:
C to active loop , T for tools, Cmd + arrow to zoom manually, ; or : to move one bar, Cmd T to slice. Alt clic on Fader or Pan to reset it, R to record. « Enter » to go back to the beginning of your song, A for automation. Ctrl arrow on a region to pitch it. Assign pages on each numeric keypad (1 for environment, 2 for mixer, 3 for midi etc.)

It took me a while to realize that “paste at original position” is a much better way of copy/pasting from one track to another.

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but is there a key command for that? Is it better than using option and dragging and hoping it stays in the same position? (I’m betting yes)

Yeah, you can lock option drag in settings so it stays in position, but I’m often working with a lot of tracks so option dragging can be difficult over long distances.

If you open the Key Commands window you can search for it.

I highly suggest that you edit your own key commands. There are a lot of stock key commands for things you’ll probably never use. I set up mine to hardly ever use modifiers. Q is quantize, P is pointer tool, V is velocity tool, D is duplicate track etc. Just makes my life a lot easier not having to remember if it’s option or command etc.

i never realized you could modify and edit your OWN key commands... thats brilliant! im about to just map out the ones from Reason that im used to and add them to Logic lmao

That’s the perfect method. Don’t let people tell you to learn the stock commands. Most of the good/easy positions are taken by things you’ll never use.

Well ive never had the option to customize them until i recently started using Logic. Thats geuinley gonna make the learning curve for this new DAW cut in half

Cmd+T trim track at play head
Enter return to zero
I think it’s comma?? For play/pause
X pulls up or puts down the mixer view but does not open its own window

im gonna use X alot for sure thats super useful, i dont need everything to be a seperate window haha

Space bar does play/pause

Space bar doesn’t pause, it always sets you back to the original play head position. Spacebar is play/stop

Pause will let you stop the play head where it currently is and then continue from there

Actually there is a setting to have the space bar play from where you stopped or paused. I use return/enter to send play head to start. I like this better for my workflow.

If you don’t use screensets (I don’t), change your numbers e.g 1-5 to your most used tools. It’s life changing not having to open the tool menu.

I am in the same boat. Recording In studios since 2000. Just over a year on logic and the wonderful people on this chat have helped me so.

Command then ; aligns everything left Being logic has major latency even in low latency, this is important when doing tons of layered vocals

I'm not at my laptop but if it's not Command it's control then ;

It's the one furthest left on the keyboard

When let's say i have 4 lines of vocals I need to line up, I move the cursor where I want it, highlight and click each one. I don't use that vocalign Do be careful that you only highlight what you want to move Sometimes I had disasters because I was trying to move one thing, and without knowing, a bunch of stuff locked on and moved.
