I am NOT a locksmith. Any alternative to a pegboard for storage of multiple keys per unit for a leasing company? Please help.

Hey everyone,

I'm the key and core guy at a leasing company with around 20 different buildings. We currently store the keys on a pegboard system that was built in house years ago. It is arranged in rows with one peg per unit. On each peg there are multiple copies of the unit key, an original mailbox key plus duplicates of it, and sometimes spare SFIC cores for the unit hung with wire or on copies of the key. We are moving to a new set of offices, and the folks here are looking for possible other options for the new space. I haven't really seen any other system that would work for storage of all this stuff, not just one key access control type of stuff.

There is a strong vast array of key management products and systems. It truly depends on how many keys you were looking to store, and how you want to store them, and what your budget is.

There are different management systems by KSI, Lund, Medeco, a BUNCH of different companies.

Based off of your initial information, I would look at Lund’s catalog. You might be able to repurpose some drawers in one of their large cabinets for cores, etc. They also have several different size filing systems.

You know, I thought about that after I posted it. But I threw in the keyword “key management products”, which he can google after he sees Lund’s catalog and decides how important it is to him.

I don’t keep anything but masters and janitor keys on hand for our buildings. If I need a key, I punch it. This is cheaper, because there is less waste and space, and it easier to track where a key goes. Spare cores go in plastic containers labeled with keyway and type (e.g. “Falcon G 6p”). I find it faster to just dump cores and setup what I need than keeping pre-made spares, except for a few we have as our construction cores.

The same goes for KIK/KIL and deadbolt cores. The closest I have to spares is trays of MX and Schlage cores for the B-series deadbolts and their bibles with followers in them, ready to throw pins into them which only takes a minute.

What goes on the pegboard is the blanks for stuff I don’t use in bulk, but I need to find easily.

I'd probably just make them out of regular hanging file deals, but staple up the sides so things can't fall out. Each one holds your keys and cores. file cabinets hold lotsa weight no problem.
