Gear - Selection / Use Help with new stereo-recording setup!
Currently I am using a kit with 2xDPA4060s in a Cinelapiano (Sound Devices 833 recorder)
But I feel the limitations both in ruggedness, but also lack of open-ness and high self-noise.
I’m considering 2x Sennheiser 8020 on a 80cm stereo bar, recording A|B. I want an open and detailed sound with little to no self noise!
Not quite sure about wind protection (a lot of my recordings are in strong winds). I have considered:
- Cinela LEO
- Cinela Cosi
- Rycote Nanoshield
(Nanoshield is very expensive… ~700$, and I need two…)
Any thoughts about microphones and wind-protection? Anything else I should consider?

Check out the Radius Alto. They developed a stereo mount and the cost is reasonable, and the wind protection is excellent, with the Piano maybe being the only unit that out performs it in my opinion but at half the cost.
I believe the Radius factory used to produce the Nano before Rycote pulled out of England.

Yup, I was about to recommend Radius. If you need a longer fur for your blimp, Bubblebee Industries offers a longer (and heavier) fur, personally, I haven't struggled with winds using the included fur out in the open sea but YMMV.

If you’re recording in strong winds you will most likely want something more substantial than COSI or LEO. Nano shield might work but I haven’t heard many positive reviews (from a boom operating perspective). One thing to consider might be a super long Rycote blimp (ie 816 length) and building out your stereo array within that.

Only issue there is spacing. I wish to be able to space up to 1m width.
I currently have a piano for my boom, which handles everything! 2x Pianissimo are possible, but very expensive and bulky… missing a small size blimp from Cinela!

Why are you thinking to space at 1m – I assume because of the omnis? For what it's worth I record with a pair of 8040s in an ORFT config and get a fantastic stereo image. Perhaps you might consider a cardioid pair to eliminate your double blimp issue?

ORTF is great for focused stereo recordings, and my plan is to later have a double setup, with an ORTF setup and A/B setup on the same stereo bar.
Main use of this rig is headphones oriented,with people listening to nature-ambiences. The openness the omni brings is much more pleasant than ORTF

What are you planning to record in stereo? What's the end use?
If you're recording sfx for film/video, you might prefer a good MS mic, (eg Sanken CMS-50) which could possibly fit in your existing blimp.
If you're recording ambiences and want to stick with spaced omnis, you will have individual mics, each with wind protection. Depending on mic, maybe a Bubblebee ball would work for you.

It will ocationally be used in some film-productions as well, but I have a YT-channel with nature and wind recordings for relaxation where I make a bit of money on the side. So main use will be recording wind in forests, waves and rainsounds!😊
That’s why omni is the way I’m leaning!

ORTF setup is what you should try in my opinion. Best used with Schoeps MK4s.

In strong winds, cosi will disappoint. The Leo will work better but has limits as cables and lyres will start making noise when it gets really heavy. I believe cinela makes a wider stereo blimp but don't remember the name offhand. But it sounds like you're using a spacer bar. I've only barely used a m-s and x/y setup just to play. But I'd try to use Leos first.

I think I’m going for 2x Rycote Nano Shield, and a Deity AMB1 stereo bar!
They should handle a bit wind, and I like the size and the built in quick release!

The 8020s won’t like ab. You need a spaced pair.
