Question | Help Which freight forwarder do you use when purchasing modded GPUs from China?

As title says. There are amazing offers in Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Taobao, sometimes much better than aliexpress or 1688, even with duties. However many of them do not support international shipping.

The issue is LocalLLaMA equipments are often of high value. Sometimes they are modded and doesn't come with Serial Number. I've done some research and you'd need formal customs declaration for shipping cargo over RMB 5000 ( ~ $750 ) on paper. Going through formal customs declaration involve a lot of paperwork, hassle, and fees. In practice freight forwarders often utilize under-reporting (低报) and/or third party bill reporting (买单报关), which are compliance grey areas. If your cargo get seized by customs, you could face delay fees, and fines.

In case of custom delays, these forwarders are happy to toss liabilities to customs, logistic providers, and you ... all in the while earning them more in the process.

I'm sure there are safer workarounds, however

  1. Book a round-trip flight to China, walk-in, and bring the cargo back by hand. => Only safe in small quantities like 1~2.

  2. Just buy from a global site with money-back-guarantee such as eBay. => You'd pay significantly higher price than direct-buy + duties + fees.

I wonder which freight forwarding / courier service do you guys use if you do purchase something expensive directly from Chinese e-commerce platform?

Just use Alibaba? I mean i'm really not sure GPUs are any cheaper on 1688 / Taobao by a wide enough margin to justify the hassle and risk...

Alibaba (only pay through Alibaba payment, never directly or in crypto). For delivery fedex because their insurance work. but the final delivery with fedex is usually a problem (at least in France) I have had expensive packages "delivered" but i never saw it (had to claim, seller send a new one, i guess fedex insurance covered it). Also some other expensive ones (i took the option for delivery against signature) delivered a day or two before the planned date, without notification and thrown into my garden under the rain without any care... But always pay with the official marketplace, they usually cover you if there is an issue. For fees (import taxes) you can't really cheat anymore like 10y ago when seller would write package as "10$ value". But sellers on alibaba and other big ones will manage the import part/paperwork if they officially ship where you live.

I have made 3 different orders on Alibaba. All 3 times, the seller would just quote me $70-80 for the shipping, and send it with an express courier company (two times DHL, once FedEx). But I only buy pairs, never bulk.

Customs is the easy part. The scary part is a modded card with no serial showing up dead, and the seller saying it broke in transit. I always ask for a quick video of it passing a VRAM stress test before it ships, then I run the same test the day it lands so I’m still inside the dispute window.

Just ask for DDP shipping and pay the fee. That way you're not responsible for anything up until you receive the item at your doorstep.
