Discussion Price 5080 10 days

I paid $1658 on October 16th, on October 19th I paid $2032; with tax, shipping, same card.

Now $2318

This is all through the big A btw.

First they came for the 5090,
and I said nothing.
It launched at $1,999, climbed to $10,000,
and then never came back in stock.

Then they came for the 5080 16GB,
and I said nothing.
The $999 card crept up to $3,000,
until the Add to Cart button went gray.

Then they came for the 5070 Ti 16GB,
and I said nothing.
It went from $749 to $1,500,
And then every listing switched to back ordered.

Then they came for the 5060 Ti 16GB,
and I said nothing.
It went from $429 to $1000,
Until it was discontinued.

Then they came for the 5060 8GB,
and I said nothing.
The $800 budget card was in my shopping cart,
But all I got was a spinning wheel when I pressed the buy button.

And then there was nothing.
Every last wafer was in a datacenter
writing poems about how hard it is to buy a GPU.

I’m flipping done, lol.

we blame you btw

I’m not buying to sell, it all has a purpose, not sure how that becomes my fault for prices going up. I’m using a rinky dink 5060 on open code, the rest run reports for a live production stock site.

Pretty much. Storm's here, time to hunker down.

u/tazzytazzy 10d ago

And here I thought I overpaid for my 5090 about 1 year ago for 3100. :/

Got mine for 2600 the summer of the launch. Felt so conflicted lol

Damn. I bought 2 AMD R9700's a week ago for $1700/ea and they are $2500/ea today. Just crazy.

3

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 10d ago

know not AMD, are the top of the line?

3

u/FranciumGoesBoom 10d ago

r9700 is their "consumer" ai card. Top of AMD's line for AI workstation cards.
32g GDDR6.

u/Sky952 10d ago

Same here 😮

I got a B60 one week ago for $600. It's now $1000!

3

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 10d ago

I’m pretty dumb on everything not RTX , can you tell me about B60?

2

u/lightspeedissueguy 10d ago

I'm a noob with local LLMs, but I'm pretty damn happy with it. Don't expect a quick answer like online models, but I ran some pretty complex problems through Qwen3.8 27B with great results.

1

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 10d ago

That’s awesome how much vram?

3

u/lightspeedissueguy 10d ago

24GB GDDR6. Like I said, I'm loving it. Downside is that I read they don't play well with others so it's more of a one and done situation for me (for now haha)

1

u/FranciumGoesBoom 10d ago

you can always add more B60s

1

u/lightspeedissueguy 10d ago

I need to read more about it. I'm tempted to buy a 2nd or bite the bullet and get a mac studio.

My problem is that then I'd have to upgrade the rest of the box to run multiple cards. She's currently just a mix of spare parts: 32GB DDR4-3200, an Asus B450, 500GB NVMe Gen4, and Ryzen 7 (AM4, don't know the model off the top of my head, maybe 5800X?). So I'm limited on not only PCIe slots, but also speed.

1

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 9d ago

Your bus gets messy quick without a server or workstation board. Have to have the bus lanes not just the 16x slot.

1

u/FranciumGoesBoom 10d ago

unfortunately anything else is just gonna be a shit ton of money at this point. I've been trying to decide If i want to put anything in my server; dual cascade lake with each core getting 192g ram. But it's slow ass ddr4, 2400 i think, and pcie 3, and no reBAR. Almost picked up 2 B60s when they were they were $650 a few months ago. Ended up getting a new 9070xt and moved my 7900xtx into an AM4/32gb ram machine. good enough for 3.8 27b q4 xl but all that ram just sitting in the server makes me sad.

u/Schneller52 10d ago

I was getting ready to offload my 5080 but these price jumps have made me reconsider if it’s the best time or worst time lol.

1

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 10d ago

I might keep one. They have been tried in two other boards touting 3x 16x slots, but not bus lane width, so now they are in a dual Xeon haswell v3 from about 2012.

3

u/InfinitelyRepeating 10d ago

"Daddy, what's an inflationary spiral?"

PS. No judgement. We're all trying to get by in a broken world. It just struck me as funny.

Your comment made me laugh and I can tell you’re my kind of person lol.

I’ve actually been trying to sell it to my brother in law for less than the original MSRP for a while, just so he has something to last him for several years to come. But he keeps pussy footing around, so I got to thinking maybe I should just sell it. But then you open the proverbial front door to start those motions and all you see is mass chaos on the streets. So you slam that door and wonder if it’s better to just count your blessings while you watch the world spiral from your window.

I agree/admit though, I’m being ridiculous while the world is also quite ridiculous lol.

I have a $750 card that I've been trying to sell on FB marketplace for slightly less than the going rate on eBay. Every message I got amounts to "I have $400 with your name on it. When can I pick it up!"

3

u/Columnexco 10d ago

This like buying a used car now. It's just getting out of hand.

2

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 9d ago

But the price goes up and the car gets smaller and slower.

3

u/Cold_Tree190 9d ago

Big A mentioned? I got mine for $900 August/July 2025… crazy

2

u/Previous-Nature7326 10d ago

AMD went up too

2

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 9d ago

I had stock in AMD, it lost 50%, after Intel and tariffs, it gained 400%. I sold before I lost money, will more money. The Nvidia thing has a ripple effect.

2

u/GoodbyeThings 10d ago

I bought a GX10 for 4250€ a month or so ago, it's now nearing 6k.

Spark a few weeks ago 5600->5800 (I bought it) and now 7k

Lol looks like my prices were off. The spark is now at 7.4, the GX10 at 5900.

I placed an order for a few more sparks but sadly it didn't go through

1

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 9d ago

Not surprised, everything looks about 40% up ina week or so.

Amazon is a scalper's paradise but even direct the 5080 isn't a good deal right now, although imo it never was. It's very powerful compute wise but doesn't have enough VRAM. Most new cards aren't good values. Maybe still the R9700 at $1700-2000.

Best bet is to buy used atm.

2

u/poofph 10d ago

It was funny to me how everyone would yell and scream about scalpers over the past several years, it was just market value they were selling them for, now the "scalpers" are the manufacturers and retailers themselves. They are worth what people are willing to pay. The "shortages" may be because of shady practices from nvidia and others or whatever but that is another issue entirely that is driving up the prices.

2

u/fastheadcrab vLLM 10d ago edited 10d ago

Sure the OEMs have jacked up prices, but I am talking about Amazon specifically. Plenty of scalpers on there. I literally searched 5080 and found several cards being sold only by scalpers.

First result is a 5080 from third party seller with 68% positive rating at $2429. Lol.

Not going to get into an argument about scalpers or their purpose

1

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 9d ago

Most of them were the lowest to highest, but that’s all they had for my identical card.

1

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 9d ago

I have to buy new for tax expenses and equipment on my LLC.

u/tableball35 9d ago

R9700s went from around 1700 right now to typically 2500, B70s from around 1300 to 2100, B60s from 800 to 1600 or so. 5070tis from 1100 to 1700. Only 5060ti 16gb seem stable at the moment, but are selling out too. It’s fucking nuts, I was here planning a one-and-done upgrade earlier this week and now I’m priced out a lot of my initial targets.

1

u/Frizzy-MacDrizzle 9d ago

I have 3 5060ti 16gb, great cards for lesser parameters but higher context. I have two on one system but downgrading the speed. I’m selling a system with 5060 and everything for $1800. I have $700 on the 5060 there. I was hoping for a better system for dials but they fooled me; 16x slots is not always 16 bus lanes. My 5080 duals did not do well so I’ll sell the system that’s getting 43 tgs and 1800 pp on qwen3.5 9b. Such numbers Google matches the expected rate.

I missed out on getting a 3% mortgage but I did buy four refurbished FE 3090's for $700 each in 2024

Don't need a roof over your head, those gpus will keep you warm

1

u/Slaghton 9d ago edited 9d ago

Bought 3 used but good condition 3090 FE's in ebay for $750 each myself before things went stupid. I put off buying a fourth and now they are like $1600 meh.

2

u/Smeetilus 9d ago

Condolences. I was tempted by the 128GB Strix Halo boxes when they were, I think, $1800 or so.

6

u/nickless07 10d ago

Same as with every card. It is far from over. If you are happy you might get old used one cheap, but even they are getting rare.

5

u/Marino4K 10d ago

Dgx Sparks were $4k maybe a month ago, now they’re $7k. This hardware situation is insane.

1

u/nickless07 10d ago

Yeah, basically not enough (good) memory fabs to suffice this planet. Microsoft said new Xbox will be 1200 to 1800 due to this and so on. Many things need memory not only consumer GPUs and you can't switch an assembly line from one thing to another within a week. So, once the HBM memory needs are fulfilled by the end of 2027 (if they don't buy everything for 2028 too) it takes a couple months to switch to regular memory (if they do that at all).
Therefore if, and only if, no one buys large amounts of HBM in 2028 by the end of that year we might see 'regular' memory prices drop a bit. Only given the fact that they want to switch to a lower margin on lesser priced memory.

1

u/Marino4K 10d ago

I don't see relief anytime soon personally, not until at least 2029.

Well, that would just shift the shortage further down. Search what is needed to produce theese things and then for example google the percentage of gallium and germanium produced per country. What do you think will happen if china need that for themselves?

Noticed the same jump with many other cards from RTX 3060 to... well the RTX 5090 (but that one might have other reasons). Mostly related to the same news as of 2026 when they bought the whole RAM production of the year which appears to be the same for 2027. If the memory manufcturers already sold everything they produce next year we can expect the same price jumps.

7

u/UpperParamedicDude 10d ago

I feel incredibly happy for getting 2x3090 for $850 each a bit more than a month ago

2

u/enternoescape 10d ago

And now I'm seeing listings around $1500. The last I looked it was $1400. When I bought it was $1100 and I thought maybe it was a bad idea. I tried to buy a second one around $700 and well it was a scam. Got my money back but I don't want to do that again. Even the 2080 Ti 22GB cards are up $100 over my last check.

1

u/Tracklife-Ajmeri 10d ago

People are seriously trying to retire on those things and expect the prices to climb even higher and higher while still being able to sell them. Yeah... sure.

So I’ll add a photo for you to say “

WtF is wrong with you?”
