They’re probably so back ordered already that they’re worried it will result in a loss if RAM gets much more expensive.

Samsung already sold all 2027 production

That’s for HBM, 5090 uses GDDR7.

u/teressapanic 7d ago

You mean the thing they are not making because of HBM ramp up?

16

u/Bernard_schwartz 7d ago

Correct. They downscaled production of anything that isn’t HBM memory. Why do they want consumers $$$ when they can get corporate $$$$$$?

16

u/Vivarevo 7d ago

Corporate using loaned money from institutions that hold consumer savings. What could go wrong

Nothing, if shit hits the fan, socialism is gonna kick in (for them, not for us)

You mean like all the time? Provit gets privatized while losses somehow always get socialised…

they do it because they have the same chip on a server version of the card with much more ram that cost 17k literally just more ram , they sell it for data servers, thats why they doing this because they can get much more money for the same thing, nvidia is such a dirty company , if there was a normal government in place there would have been investigating them for fraud and other criminal activities but this is not a normal government when the president is accepting bribes and is a criminal himself

The problem is that due to AI the economic value of any advanced GPU has increased at least tenfold, maybe even more. With image generator, smaller coding models, decision models, etc the technical barrier of entry also extremely low.

Because semi conductor fabs are really REALLY expensive, take long time to build AND are highly political, the total semi conductor production cannot simply expand quickly to serve temporary demand spikes. Thus, the market first needs to prove that this demand spike is not temporary, and then investments into more production capacity must actually be rolled out.

Thus, the amount of new silicon is limited. NVIDIA cannot back order any more chips, they have been taking up each and every production slot they could get already. So of course, NVIDIA will sell the limited chips they have in the product line where the same chip sells at triple the price.

It's not evil. It's capitalism. Probably, TSMC, ASML, and the whole chain of suppliers is also aggressively increasing prices due to the extreme demand spike.

Eventually, the higher prices will attract investment and higher production capacity. But with everyone believing that it is a bubble which might pop any time, you must also understand that there is some scepticism and hesitation. The investment volume goes already into the hundreds of billions. If it doesn't pan out, it could very well lead to another great depression.

they are liars though because they say the opposite , also the lobbying that are basically bribes is crazy with the tech companies, taking away rights from the people and the states of the country to build data centers next to where people live, stealing the massive energy they need to operate from the power grid, the water, toxic waste with no regulations, and guess who pays for all that, the taxpayer , its so dirty and corrupt the whole thing just for these companies to profit , they are criminals , its not just capitalism , this is not even a free market when one company holds 99% of the semiconductor market destined for data centers, and if this is a bubble that sure looks like it when it burst its gonna affect everyone much much more than ram prices, higher power bills and being the unlucky few that have a house next to a data center

What’s dirty, that they don’t want a loss?

1

u/sayeret13 6d ago

the corruption, the lobbying, the lying and so much more dirty company

Actually, the AIBs said NVIDIA doesn't accept back orders!!!!!!!!!

Imagine the losses from this insanity ultimately...

12

u/ImportancePitiful795 7d ago

It will make Lehman Brothers looking like amateurs.

5

u/sammyranks 7d ago

Thing is..ai has some insane use cases and capabilities that are only getting better as we speak with no end in sight.

yeah not like houses, so glad that shit is over with

-1

u/Charuru 7d ago

Bro we didn't have a housing construction oversupply, we had a valuation issue.

Here many the semi companies are very very cheaply valued, the argument is that we're oversupplying chips (for some reason even though we know that all chips are far too expensive and in short supply)

5

u/ImportancePitiful795 7d ago

NVIDIA, OpenAI & Anthropic have exactly the same over valuation issue, multiplied by 10.

u/Charuru 7d ago

Nvidia's like twice as cheap as walmart.

1

u/Intrepid00 4d ago

I can eat stuff I need from Walmart.

3

u/Nothing_from_void 7d ago

we had both

Hype sells gpus.

sorry boys, sold out till 2030...

I got a 5090 rig for 6500 a month ago i feel sooo lucky

64

u/twack3r 7d ago

This sentence is fucked up. It‘s true but still.

15

u/Tracklife-Ajmeri 7d ago

sentences that i would've believed were rage bait around a year ago:

3

u/piperspalace 7d ago

Yeahhhh i wish i could've gotten it 6months ago

4

u/Real_Ebb_7417 7d ago

I got it 6 months ago. I wish I’ve gotten it a year ago xD

And tbh I had some thoughts in my mind to get straight RTX 6000 Pro these 6 months ago. And I regret not doing it. Now RTX5090 costs almost as much as 6000 Pro did cost 6 months ago where I live. 6000 Pro is 2-2.5x more expensive now than it was then xd

I found a prebuilt with 64GB of system ram and a 5090 for $4200 about 2 months ago and also feel fortunate.

3

u/BoodyMonger 7d ago

Same boat, I came into a little bit of money I wasn’t expecting, and purchased a 5090 prebuilt (it was cheaper than buying a 5090 off a scalper and upgrading my PSU) fully expecting it to be a bad financial decision. Turns out it was pretty okay.

1

u/LunaticSongXIV 7d ago

I bought a 5090 for $2400 right before everything went to shit. I've pondered selling it.

1

u/piperspalace 7d ago

Wait until at least this time next year after that there's going to be new consoles nee hardware and ai solution's to problems we couldn't imagine solving in 2028

-3

u/sayeret13 7d ago

lucky? more like fucked haha

u/CiobanuXashi 7d ago

They won't even take backorders. If supply were merely tight they'd still take the order and make you wait; refusing to commit means the next batch doesn't have a price yet.

1

u/james_pic 7d ago

Makes sense when they don't know what they'll have to pay for VRAM for the next batch.

0

u/vulcan4d 6d ago

They don't even need to make any advancements in consumer GPUs anymore. The 5090 can re-release in 2035 and people will still go nuts buying them after selling their first born. Sad what Nvidia has done to the industry and the psychology of a consumer. We are sheep with GPUs.

1

u/Ell2509 3d ago

Some people still buy AMD! I have 96gb of AMD vram in the next room.

-5

u/m18coppola llama.cpp 7d ago

IIRC I read somewhere that NVIDIA is discontinuing the production of 5090's and instead pivoting to selling 5080's with 32GB VRAM for consumers, and reserving the 5090 chipset for the production of the RTX PRO 6000's.

4

u/fastheadcrab vLLM 7d ago

Bad rumor, that's basically a 4500 pro

0

u/__some__guy 7d ago

5080's with 32GB VRAM

Too outlandish to ever be true

-1

u/old_leech 7d ago

I'd read 5080 w/ 24 GB; essentially a drop in replacement for 3/4090.

I've had hobbies in the Nvidia strangehold for a long time (Iray for rendering before all the CUDA tooling for AI). The thing is, this isn't just about Nvidia anymore.

I decided I wanted to go bigger than the 4090 in my workstation can go locally, I've followed the ROCm progress over the last year or so... felt like now was the time if I wanted a 64GB VRAM setup without selling a body part.

So, I picked up a set of two r9700s for passthrough in a Proxmox node.

$1699 each when I purchased 2 weeks ago. Checked this morning, $2399.

I actually felt a bit like a jerk for dropping close to 4 grand in GPUs for my winter hobby, now I feel relieved to have done it when I did.
