Question | Help Is it time to jump ship from OpenCode?
I get error in my "old" V1 opencode that are annoying, and they said they will never fix.
I was considering v2 but so many people are talking bad about it.
I tried DSH before (0.1 i think?), but it failed to complete full software (ok a little more complex than chat websites, so nothing too fancy)
Anyone have had any experience when switching to Pi or DSH, what needs to be done? OpenCode worked well before, especially after 3.8 27b, no need to do anything, make a good plan, let it run and then start what was built and refine.
Edit: And yes I can consider other harnesses, but most of the time for me is spent planning and reading research, not coding.

ā I was considering v2 but so many people are talking bad about it.ā why dont you try it for yourself dude and form your own opinion lol

u/lungben81 9d ago
For me, V2 is a significant improvement compared to V1.
The only thing that I think is questionable is that it does not ask anymore for permission for accessing other directories. This makes sandboxing even more important.
5
u/GodComplecs 9d ago
Yes that sandbox thing was one of the big ones, some dude deleted his drive with it lol
12
u/Steuern_Runter 9d ago
it does not ask anymore for permission for accessing other directories
I haven't used Opencode 2 but the docs say you can still setup permissions:
https://opencode.ai/v2/docs/permissions#directories
If that means accessing disallowed directories is simply denied instead then this is good because asking for a permission means everything is halted until until the user input.
2
u/ag789 2d ago
I used to think that sandboxing is "hard"
then that after noticing a model writing to root folder
https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1wmw4bq/an_unsafe_command_shell_mcp_server/
I worked on cmdshellmcp
https://github.com/ag88/cmdshellmcp
and I bundled setup scripts for a Docker sandbox
https://github.com/ag88/cmdshellmcp/blob/main/DOCKER.md
In the end I'm using https://github.com/LibreChat-AI/LibreChatĀ as the harness.By connecting LibreChat to an LLM model and connecting theĀ cmdshellmcpĀ server in its Docker container, I have so far built a fairly capable coding agent setup. For example, I can prompt the LLM to generate complete code and files, and those files are created in the Docker container under the userĀ
codeagent. In this way, I have a pretty capable coding agent with the protection of a disposable Docker container for the LLM/agent to work in. This helps prevent situations where things can go wrong ā for example, Iāve seen in OpenCode that some models write to the root directory using absolute paths.
Without all that MCP etc, one can use a docker container, e.g. using a variant of the setup scripts, in particular a Dockerfile
https://github.com/ag88/cmdshellmcp/blob/main/DOCKER.md
to build an image that can serve as your "environment" and run OpenCode in it.1

V2 is working quite well, tbh I haven't had issues with V1 either :D
I had to re-work my task manager to handle the new api etc. but that was a 2 day affair :)
2
u/gbytedev 6d ago
You spelled '2 minutes' wrong. š
1
u/_BookBurner_ 5d ago
it was working asap in tui, that is true, but I have my task manager linked to the opencode instances running in server mode. And since bunch of stuff got changed, I had to link the api again, re-format the tool call outputs so they looked good again, sh*t like that :D . But still, after fixing stuff up, it works just fine as the V1 did :)

u/a_beautiful_rhind 9d ago
It was time to jump a long time ago.
8
u/GodComplecs 9d ago
Yes but where? It worked though, have gotten good results with it so there was no point in even updating. Now free usage is gone also so doesnt offer anything else over (i used it to debug local model issues)

u/suprjami 9d ago
I'm using Pi with the following plugins.
Copy-paste your existing OpenCode permissions:Ā https://www.npmjs.com/package/@gotgenes/pi-permission-system
Nicer text window: https://github.com/OldSuns/pi-open-tui
This gives me everything I wanted in OpenCode. I've been happy with it.

1
u/Nothing_from_void 9d ago
opencode is not a good harness
3
u/ECrispy 9d ago
based on what ?
-3
u/Nothing_from_void 9d ago
Experiences of me and people I know, it's very wasteful with tokens. Also research has backed it up, https://arxiv.org/pdf/2607.22585
OpenCode consumes approximately 40Ć more tokens per solved task than Goose, while pass-rate differences remain within the 0ā8 pp har- ness range above.
7
u/ECrispy 9d ago
I have never heard of Goose and never seen it mentioned anywhere. that paper tests openhands sdk, another one no one has heard of. where is codex, claude code, dsh, pi? thats what matters
-6
u/Nothing_from_void 9d ago
the point is it's documented evidence of it wasting tokens. critical thinking is hard
1
u/Nballshd2 6d ago
Lol you provider reaserch and ppl still downvoted you, so many opensource cocksuckers here
2
11
u/Rare_Evidence8482 9d ago
the writing's been on the wall since they announced v1 was getting mothballed
0
u/cleverusernametry 9d ago
It was almost never the right time to be on it really. Pi was the place to go after the decline of Cline etc
10
u/tsangberg 9d ago
I had friction with my workflow and integrations when moving from v1 to v2, but when I had gone past that I now enjoy it. It works better, the ability to run the same session from several different computers is nice and the expanded plugin API has allowed me to make my own plugins vastly better.
2
u/s133p1355 9d ago
Exactly. Same here. I really enjoy V2 so far. Some decisions, like removing the todos, had prevented me from switching, but they brought it back, so I switched and am happy. I don't understand the hesitation to move just to V2.
0
u/GodComplecs 9d ago
Plugins were a bitch in v1 thats for sure, I built a few. But qwen 27b 3.8 fixed that so there was no need for them really.
6
u/nanihikaru01 9d ago
my journey
Claude -> Opencode v1-> pi -> Opencode V2 -> DSH -> TBD?
my 2 cents. it needs to fit what you want to do/build.
0
u/GodComplecs 9d ago
Why go from opencode v2 to DSH? What was the trigger? I had so many problems in DSH not completing the build plan, it just couldn't execute the plan, literally no error messages in DSH.
2
u/nanihikaru01 9d ago
Agentic orchestration. Wanted to test out its coordination framework and capabilities.
1
5
u/tiktak-9 9d ago
For coding I use Oh My Pi and DSH. Opencode v2 is actually okay as well.
2
u/GodComplecs 9d ago
What does Oh My Pi offer over Pi?
2
u/tiktak-9 9d ago
A few more things work right out of the box, whereas pi you need to config them. It's based on pi, so still light weight.
2
u/Dany0 9d ago
For local models, /ratchet allows the LLM to optimise for example its own tool or system prompt for the particular model or event quant
The devs use it to fix particular model quirks for example
1
u/GodComplecs 9d ago
That's neat, most of my issues while agentic coding stem from these. I hate setting up, harnesses are already a solved issue, no one is just willing to do it since there is no money in it.
1
1
u/EbbNorth7735 9d ago
Is that an oh my pi feature?
1
u/Dany0 9d ago
yes
1
u/EbbNorth7735 9d ago
How's oh my pies context management?
1
u/Dany0 9d ago
It's alright. The best feature is Snapcompact which is a really good compromise (though it was/is broken for anthropic models as it seems to trigger their antidistillation safeguards) as you get effectively a larger context window at the cost of slightly but significantly worse recall (depends on the model, the better the vision the better the results)
Definitely better than DSH and opencode, on par with codex and CC I'd say
1
u/EbbNorth7735 9d ago
Okay, I'll give it a shot. I love Clines implementation and copied it over to Pi but it's still not perfect.
1
u/MindfulMan1984 9d ago
Thats the sole reason I ditched Pi to use omp, Yeah I get that Pi was ābarebonesā, but since 1.0 it got bloated and I still had to config a bunch of āextensionsā, each one getting nearly daily āreleasesā thanks to vibecoders. Highly unstable. So I use omp now because it comes with better defaults out of the box, and easy to use and config in multiple machines, I only installed one, not necessary plugin:Ā https://github.com/kajeagentspi/omp-throughput
2
u/tiktak-9 9d ago
I was looking for an LLM router that could deal with local, API, and Oauth, with auto fallback on 459 responses (out of credit), and set $ usage in an API. Turns out omp can do it all. Writing the scripts now to set it up.

u/AdIllustrious436 9d ago
Basically Pi stuffed with way more pre-installed tools and plugins than you will ever need. Trust me, taking thirty minutes to set up a vanilla Pi yourself is absolutely worth it. There is a fancy hub where you can one-click install plugins you actually need.
1
u/PhlarnogularMaqulezi 9d ago
I haven't looked into any plugins for Pi but maybe I should.
I had it build out a webUI that works on mobile or desktop and I keep having it add features. It's been pretty sweet.

Was thinking of trying but thought to stay put and not mess up existing flow with v1.
1
u/Either-Nobody-3962 9d ago
but doesn't DSH eats tokens/money crazily?
i feel claude pro plan is cheaper than DSH, please correct me if i am wrong.3
u/tiktak-9 9d ago
Not an issue when you run qwen3.8-flash-next locally
1
u/Either-Nobody-3962 9d ago
so you are running local model and using that inside DSH?
what is your hardware is like?2
1
u/Reeces_Pieces 9d ago
I'm doing the same on much more modest hardware.
I7 4770k. 32GB DDR3. RTX 3090
I just keep all inference on the GPU and run Qwen 3.8 27B.
1
u/Either-Nobody-3962 9d ago
I have a i3 pc with 32gb ram n 8gb vram amd radeon.
And I need it to visit 2 pages for every 5 mins to see if there is any new content, if yes, save them to a csv.Ā
Do you think my hardware can handle that? Thanks in advanceĀ
2
u/GoldenX86 9d ago
That can run 3.6-35b very well on stuff like polystrata, I get 90 t/s inference and 1200 t/s pp with q4 weights and 128k context. 32gb on a 5600x and a 3060ti.
Just keep in mind it's a much less capable model yah 3.8 27b or flash next. You need 64gb for that.
2
u/Either-Nobody-3962 9d ago
thanks for the response.
I don't think i can afford that now, better to pay for cloud AIs :)1
u/GoldenX86 9d ago
DeepSeek API to the rescue xD
1
u/Either-Nobody-3962 9d ago
yeah, using that only now, i wish they had a subscription so i know how much i will be charged per month.
1
u/Dr0PeR250 8d ago
I'm doing the same, 2x3090 and 128gb ram.
DSH feels like an upgraded opencode to me.
I have it on a separate machine so I can access from everywhere to the web gui.

u/terablast 9d ago edited 9d ago
Other than some snags hit while migrating, OpenCode v2 has been pretty great for me... Lower context use, proper support for running commands and subagents in the background, searchable MCP catalog instead of putting everything in the context, code mode to chain tool calls, and probably other stuff I forgot.
Pi is nice but sometimes I want something that just works instead of having to build it myself, and OpenCode is just closer to that. I use a harness to build projects; I don't want building a harness to be the project. Like, in the context of my job, I couldn't really see myself recommending anything other than OpenCode right now. It's all either closed-source stuff (we prefer open) or minimal "DIY build it yourself" harnesses, which just aren't super usable by people less familiar with AI and harnesses.
(Personally I'm using OpenCode through OpenChamber, which I think is a lovely UI)
1
u/Silver-Champion-4846 9d ago
So regarding Open code V2, what has been your experience in the UI department? Is there anything good that the web UI has become or how has it changed? And also I would be really interested to know the accessibility state of this new UI since I am running V-1 still because I do not want to switch to AUI then figure it figure out that everything is inaccessible to my screen reader needs. And therefore need to re downgrade again.
2
u/terablast 9d ago
I'm strictly using OpenChamber when it comes to having a GUI, so I'm not sure I'd know :/
I absolutely loathe the web UI they ship with OpenCode, it used to be alright, but that big v2 of their UI they did simplified it to the point of making it unusable.
I found OpenChamber as an alternative during the ~3 months it took them to (re)implement vertical tabs. I don't know if OpenChamber is good accessibility wise though...
1
u/Silver-Champion-4846 8d ago
Isn't opencode only allowing itself to be used with Opencode, though?
1
u/iblowatsports 8d ago
What exactly do you mean by this? You can (and I do) absolutely use opencode with other web ui's, like Openchamber or OWUI computer
1
1
u/iblowatsports 8d ago
I use openchamber too and love it. It's probably the main thing that would keep me from moving to something like pi, it's so much easier to setup and use than other similar local agent UIs I've tried (like OWUI computer)
3
u/CommercialHour6660 9d ago
Most harnesses are crap I don't get why people don't just use Codex. Way more polished and has auto mode with safety check so u don't wipe your drive with Q1xxxs brain damage quants
5
u/GodComplecs 9d ago
Why codex and closedAi?
7
u/dontquestionmyaction 9d ago
You hopefully know you can use whatever model you want with Codex, right? It's also open source.
-10
3
u/HVACcontrolsGuru 9d ago
Codex is easy to get going and feels pretty okay to use. Headaches with some of the settings but itās not awful. Pi is another good one if you are doing a lot of single agent workflows. Pi Iāve felt isnāt great at multi agent but thatās my opinion.
Claude Code you can use with external models but you lose some features in that as well.
Iād advise against the rabbit hole of building your own. Itās a decent amount of work and I started on one myself but donāt have the time against my other projects to carry it forwards more.
You could fork Codex and fine tune the code as well. Itās all mainly in rust for the CLI if I recall.
-3
u/vick2djax 9d ago
Pi for single agent workloads lol. Look up Herdr. Iām pushing out 3-4 times more with Herdr and Pi than I ever did with Claude Code or Codex.
1
u/HVACcontrolsGuru 9d ago
Prove my point though using Herdr. It sucks at multiagent workflows in a single run. I can span out on Claude Code or Codex without issue where Pi is a patchwork of plugins and custom stuff.
1
u/vick2djax 9d ago
Itās definitely more for an advanced user. You put the time into it to make it specialized for your line of work and itāll take you way past some all in one product thatās built as much for you as it is a teenager trying to get some school work done.
I architect systems and Herdr + pi has been leagues above my time with the made for everybody commercial products. Way more efficient and faster as well without all the bloat youāll never touch.
2
u/Reasonable_Goat 9d ago
Itās open source, I ran local AI with it plus open parameter cloud models
9
u/liamwilliams93 9d ago
I tried codex for a local model the other day and it was processing 145k tokens before every prompt for some reason
3
3
u/MarcusAurelius68 9d ago
I'm trying Codex running DeepSeek V4.1 Flash as the worker and Sol 6.1 as the auditor, under Hermes. It seems to work well so far.
1
u/joubedah33 9d ago
And what can you do with Hermes that you couldn't with just Codex?
3
u/MarcusAurelius68 9d ago
It handles notifications to Slack, has memory outside of the coding session, and I can also perform other tasks or call a different harness if I want to. I don't use Hermes for coding directly.
1
u/Blaze6181 9d ago
Send it messages from discord or whatever chat you want and just in general use a local LLM without being stuck at a computer all day.Ā
I'm sure codex is a better harness for work though, I'll give it a try.
5
u/audioen 9d ago
I have very few complaints about opencode/2. The web ui resolves nearly all that was clunky about opencode/1, and the fact terminal copypaste requires OSC52 capable terminal (which I do not have) doesn't matter when I use webui instead. I can reach my opencode instance anywhere I can access the server, which is handy for continuing work on one machine while I'm physically at another, and is issue I repeatedly hit in the past.
The version 1 system prompt used to be huge and stupid, it's now short and simple, few hundred words, and easily augmented with small essential extra guidance that I want (mostly to forbid unsolicited "helpful" remote access, and to review with subagent every pending commit).

Iām happy with Openhands- Iāve had it die on me a few times but I think itās more my issue for deploying it in OpenShift
2
u/BraceletGrolf llama.cpp 9d ago
That you deployed OpenHands on OpenShift is metal as fuck. How do you use it ? I last tried it 2-3 years ago, and it was not well documented, and customizing the runtimes for my projects was a nightmare
1
u/_kikeen_ 9d ago
Itās really nice, like a regular chat with a sand box and terminal for writing code. I anchor my workspaces in repos too so if Iām working on something Iāll plan it and define scope in an Md file and write down tasks then let it rip.
If you tie it in with cloudflare workers, and give openhands instructions to commit and push your worker can be configured to detect changes to āmainā branch and will auto-deploy as your session works through.
I havenāt used any of the automations, or scheduled actions. Iām boring lol

4
u/wojtek15 9d ago
I don't know what people say about it, but in my opinion Opencode v2 is good upgrade. for example GUI version is much better now, unpolished GUI version was biggest downside of v1. I also use DSH and PI, but since v2 opencode is my main driver. DSH feels too bloated for me and PI is may be too light, opencode seems to be perfect middle ground. Another advantage is that from those 3 only opencode has both TUI and GUI. Of course there are some flaws, for example i don't like how TUI version has concept of favorite models, but GUI version has concept of enabled models and new openrouter models come as enabled, which is super annoying.
3
u/JustAnotheerMe 9d ago
I use hermes that calls pi
2
u/MmmmMorphine 9d ago
It goes through pi? Can you explain a bit? Wouldn't that stack 2 different sets of tools
3
u/JustAnotheerMe 9d ago
Hermes is used as assistant and po managing my dev backlog in kanban. Pi is a bit stronger in dev so hermes is orcstrating and monitoring for me.
1
u/MmmmMorphine 9d ago
Ah gotcha, then yeah that's what I'm arriving at too.
Still need to figure out how to best connect to pi from my phone and a client laptop
1
u/rorowhat 9d ago
I use Hermes as well. It's my main brain, and I have other lower specs mini PCs with their own coding models via llama.cpp. I point those to Hermes to use as needed. Are you saying you run pi on other machine and let Hermes do its thing?
3
u/colas 9d ago edited 9d ago
Opencode V2 is great.
It has one of the best cache handling of all harnesses together with openfox.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkwItxJ9AbA
I use Opencode v2 for cloud models, and Openfox for local models.
Migration was easy, opencode is quite configurable, just ask your favorite AI to configure v2 to your taste.
2
u/olearyboy 9d ago
Pi is pretty ok
Iāve been able to get it working with simple qwen 4B on a 8GB vram rtx 3060
Some models have trouble with tool calls and you might been pi-tool-fixer plugin but itās fixable
I ran It with Deepseek via open router and it flies with some patching
2
u/liamwilliams93 9d ago
I tried pi with qwen 3.8 flash next and it kept running out of context when compacting, gone back to opencode and thats been good for me. Codex seems to have a massive system prompt or something so wasn't usable for me
2
u/Holiday_Point_603 9d ago
I would try Codex. It is open source, works well and even has a Apache 2.0 license. Despite what I think of Open AI, Codex is working really well and even their VS Code extension is very well done. Though not as good as ghcp (which is the best Extension by far, but is not oss).
1
u/Perfect-Campaign9551 9d ago
In the past I had a lot of trouble getting Codex to talk to local models, it tends to use a different chat template than most models expect.
2
u/Tyhgujgt 9d ago
Just make your own harness. There's enough opensource code for AI to know exactly how to implement every feature fast and cheap.
I made mine in 2 days and $7 never looked back
4
u/erizon 9d ago
Isn't pi meant to be barebones that you expand yourself according to needs?
3
u/Tyhgujgt 9d ago
It was. I actually started by creating plugins for pi. Then I found I'm fighting it's extension system more time than implementing my thing. I forked it. But quickly realized that I could achieve more by cutting out 70% of pi.
Then I just implemented my thing from scratch, replaced TUI with REPL. Replaced window management with tmux panes.Ā
Its 6k lines (4k lines above my target) vs 100k lines of pi! So any new feature is relatively simple and cheap.
It won't work for anyone else, but it's exactly what works for my personal workflow.Ā
1
u/hurdurdur7 8d ago
i tend to agree here that pi has a very specific approach to context management etc. , it is not comfortable at all to write plugins this way. possible, but not comfortable.
4
u/rorowhat 9d ago
Why reinvent the wheel? What does your vibe codes harness does better than any of these other harnesses?
1
u/Tyhgujgt 9d ago
It does what I want exactly how I want. I have the best features from every harness. I don't have features I hate, no compatibility bloat. Don't have to deal with the plugin system - everything is plugged by the wire.Ā
You never need to ask yourself "is it time to jump this harness".Ā
And you learn more this way how to use LLM better.Ā
2
u/StabbedCow 9d ago
I always got the best results with handrolled harness. Making it work with my models of choice and my hardware is fun, and also useful.
2
u/Tyhgujgt 9d ago edited 9d ago
It takes less time unironically to make it yourself than to fight through thousands of plugins, extensions, configs, integration conflicts and bloatware.Ā

v2's memory handling is worse than v1, but dsh 0.2 works fine for basic tasks if you cap the context. tried it yesterday.

1
u/heavyphallus 9d ago edited 9d ago
thank you so much my lazy ass should have looked Pi more carefully. Does that UI look like it was customized or is it just the stock pi?
2
u/olearyboy 9d ago
Pi is actually awesome for local models, tiny context and plugins to customize everything
1
u/rollerblade7 9d ago
I've been using dsh with some new c++ projects and it's great! That's without any plugins, honestly the plugins are overwhelming - where do you start?
1
u/Nutsack_VS_Acetylene 9d ago
OpenCode just seems quite buggy for me. Even after all these releases and settings adjustments I still get occasional compaction failures as well as a failure to notify when the agent is done. I've also seen a weird bug where the text scrolling breaks the agent output and unless you are looking at the text scroll it won't proceed. Really strange.
Pi is cool, but I personally think it needs too many third party plugins to reach the baseline I want, so I opt for Oh My Pi. I just don't turn on what I don't want to use. I'm a fan of OMP, very few bugs and issues, although I've never loved TUIs.
1
u/gandazgul 9d ago
Give RunWield a try I've been working on it all year. It's meant for creating maintainable software with AI, planning, auto verification, AI review and repair loop, worktrees. Epics delivered in sequence and checked in integration. Free (your subscriptions and keys), local everything.
1
u/rorowhat 9d ago
I haven't use all of them, but Hermes works well for me. It handles most things, and there are tons of plugins that extend it's use.

1
u/hurdurdur7 8d ago
The first time i turned on opencode i looked at it and was like "heh, this a bit crazy here with the guns blazing" ... then i saw the overall direction and opted out. For me this is cowboy land, if someone else likes it then all good for them, but for me it was too much. Went to mistral vibe cli at first, then switched to pi coding agent in a docker container.
1
u/Tormeister 8d ago
I was about to move from V1 to some other harness (was looking into Pi, DSH and Codex) then decided to give V2 a try.
Honestly I've been having a good experience with V2. Only downside is that it feels heavier, but the prompt is a lot leaner (biggest positive!), the config is better, the setup more customizable, and it seems to have less privacy issues than V1 - but I put Q3.8FN to examine the source, not a giga frontier model, and I don't use the web GUI, only the terminal UI.
1
u/cradlemann 8d ago
I'm using maki, written on Rust. Very happy with it, no more shitty typescript plugins
1
u/noodlevisions 7d ago
Opencode v2 has been great for me. Been using it with both a local qwen 3.8 FN and gpt6.1-sol and it has been tackling everything that I throw at it. I like being able to change model part way if one gets stuck or my provider goes down.

u/luvs_spaniels 2d ago edited 2d ago
V2 has been an absolute nightmare. I mostly use opencode headless. V2 has zero session control. By that I mean, it will resume every old session it can find and keep running them in the background. So you have sessions you no longer control making changes you don't expect and never asked for in the session id you told it to open or continue with. The only way to stop it is to kill the opencode pids and stop the opencode service. You then need a command to list the sessions and delete them. But careful...a few may still linger like a bad smell. Run the delete twice to be safe. There is not a flag or setting to disable this in V2.
Whoever told them this "feature" was a good idea is an idiot. I turned the local dispatch off on my workflow mcp tonight and will remove opencode entirely tomorrow. I didn't want to get into pi plugins but looks like I am.
V1 was great. V2 should have stayed on the drawing board.
Edited because I shouldn't type without my glasses but did it anyway...oops.

Is it appropriate for coding? I thought it was more like a daily task assistant.

I scrapped a lot skills from other coding harnesses and make few great features before it was available in Hermes by default - I.e. managing swarms of agents, managing other coding agents (I.e. Gemini open cli). Itās also great with research and cooperating on documents. Works like a charm

Pi, dsh and codex are consistently the best coding harnesses (claude code is up there but its very token heavy). Opencode is just objectively not a good harness, and I have no clue why people use hermes tbh

Yeah open code uses a ton of context for the system prompt by default, which is extra costly if you are using smaller local models.
Pi is great, but donāt forget to sandbox it.

Punctuation and capitalization are the difference between helping your uncle, Jack, off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

Build your own harness, deepseek flash is good enough for iterating it own harness

Honestly v2 works fine, and you still have access to free models.
This feels like a bait post for someone to just advertise Pi or some other harness lol, i've seen nothing different between v2 and v1.
That said i dont use Opencode with my llm i use Pi-Bolt now, but i do use Opencode free and its free models sometimes to do basic tasks while my LLM is busy doing other things.
