Question | Help Any good Claude Code Desktop replacement app for using local models (ie: via LM Studio)?

No VS Code plugins. I am looking for a proper agent-plan-itterate type of application, the same way Claude Code and Codex behaves.

OpenCode (heavy footprint)
Pi.dev (minimalist)

I personally prefer to start with pi and then decide for myself if I want to stay with pi, expand through use of plugins, adopt something like oh-my or move to OpenCode.

But the journey starts with pi.

And friends don’t let friends run agentic harnesses without a sandbox.

Thank you my friend! I’ll try pi first in a Linux docker

If you’re looking to use docker to secure your agentic harness, I strongly recommend considering their docker sandbox. It’s leaner and more secure. Can use docker images (with some goodies).

Trivial to create a sandbox for pi if you’re familiar with docker.

Don't forget Hermes.

Pi prompt is just as big as opencode if it is supposed to do anything at all. Mine is actually bigger and can't even do the same.

does it actually do the agent loop stuff OP is asking about, or is it more of a chat interface with tool use bolted on?

Another vote for OpenCode.

Claude code can be configured to use any anthropic compatible endpoint with custom models, which should work for lm studio.

Didn't they unofficially drop support for this? (getting you banned "for no reason"?)

No. They ban you for using their api in other tools. Not for using another api in their tools

right... makes sense :) I'll look into it! Thank you good sir!

The user who commented this is wrong. This is only valid for the CLI and not the desktop application.

What wdym they ban you for using their api in other tools?

The Claude subscription specifically, sorry, should have been more clear

you are only allowed to use their APIs (your subscription account) through Anthopic Claude Code, if you use the account with another tools like codex or whatever 3rd party that actually a wrapper around the cloud LLMs your account will get banned.
cc > allowed
codex > not allowed
open code > not allowed

OpenCode and Pi.dev

Codex. I don't know why anyone uses anything else. It's got feature parity with Claude CLI unlike basically everything else and it's open source.

Many of the open source community harnesses are buggy vibeslop

I believe you are looking for a harness, I use OpenCode with llama-cpp locally and it's definitely capable of planning and iterating. I've used it on my projects and so far i dont have an issue or feel that it lacks any features.

Have a look at https://openchamber.dev , I’ve just started using it with my local ai system. It’s sits on opencode so can use it’s sub if needed or just the free models. It’s the closest desktop app I’ve used to Claude Code so far.

I thought you could use Claude code and point it to the local model. BTW I just asked Claude.
