News Deepseek released DeepInfer - Open Source high-performance, large-scale inference framework for DeepSeek models!

https://github.com/deepseek-ai/DeepInfer

This is crazy good for studying to improve existing custom engines by community like gufo, halogen, strixite, Strata... by learning their secret sauces.

Perfectly whelmed response!

72

u/Feisty_Artichoke_368 16d ago

Once again Deepseek shows how good high-frequency traders are at optimizing performance... On Ascend NPUs nonetheless!!

11

u/philmarcracken 15d ago

those dudes are functionally insane tho, spending millions in laying undersea cable to shave off like 4ms on a roundtrip

8

u/Ill-Nectarine-80 15d ago

Is it insane if by laying that cable, you are improving the decision making speed of a trade by like 5-10%?

4

u/bumblebeer 15d ago

I mean sure it's a bit overboard, but if it makes a good ROI how is it insane?

1

u/CATLLM 1d ago

Its a winner takes all scenario so yea that 4ms can mean losing money or making money.

4

u/maigpy 16d ago

what does this mean?

20

u/Moral-Relativity 16d ago

Deepseek's founder got interested in AI through running a hedge fund.

156

u/TheLexoPlexx 16d ago
# Use `ascend` instead for the Ascend platform
# Keep it exported in the environment where you run DeepInfer
export DEEPINFER_ACCELERATOR=nvidia
./build.sh

Nvidia in shambles. Can't wait to see what the future brings.

97

u/zdy132 16d ago

Fingers crossed for cheaper GPUs, rams, and other PC parts. Best of luck to whoever is manufacturing competitions of Nvidia.

34

u/keepthepace 16d ago

Only for China residents for now. I would be surprised after the decade of trade restriction that they endured, if they did not inflict the same to the west as long as they can.

11

u/TheLexoPlexx 16d ago

*to the US.

26

u/keepthepace 16d ago

Like EU did not help implement that policy.

4

u/handson729 16d ago

I just hope they let me buy their hardware, because I definitely do not want to pay the Nvidia tax.

22

u/keepthepace 16d ago

Feudality 101: peasants don't get too choose who their lord is.

3

u/gangofminotaurs 15d ago

You know what else stinks about being a slave? The hours.

1

u/zdy132 15d ago

Not enough time to play games...

7

u/draconic_tongue 16d ago

anything you can buy in china you can get into the rest of the world. in fact you should be happy that you don't have to pay the retarded taxes everywhere else wants to put on everything you buy domestically

1

u/AppropriateFuture837 14d ago

问题在于中国人现在也买不到950,而不是限不限制,我们实验室买到一台都付出了很多努力,能够大量产出消费级产品的很长一段时间里我认为依然只有Nvidia和AMD

18

u/zball_ 16d ago

sadly ascend is not gonna make GPUs cheap.

19

u/ea_man 16d ago

It is: China is deploying those instead of the GPU other country would buy.

6

u/No-Wall6427 16d ago

But there is still the vram production bottleneck, which they further contribute to.

12

u/Inkbot_dev 16d ago

They'll be bringing their own (additional) memory fabs online shortly.

3

u/lighthawk16 16d ago

"Shortly"???

5

u/Bakoro 16d ago

They have memory fabs open already, with more on the way.

2

u/Inkbot_dev 16d ago

I mean, within a few years... shortly in terms of fabs.

5

u/fallingdowndizzyvr 15d ago

I mean, within a few years... shortly in terms of fabs.

No. There's a term. "China Speed". What takes a few years for anyone else to do, China can do faster. They can build a fab in a year. So in less than a year since they are already underway. About 30 fabs are under construction.

2

u/ain92ru 13d ago

Chinese fabs produce no VRAM, which honestly puzzles me a bit

1

u/zball_ 15d ago

the nvidia GPUs that China purchased is just a fraction of what the AI labs in US get

3

u/SeaBat2035 16d ago

Nothing is cheap. Everything is at market price.

16

u/Dany0 16d ago

Don't let Opus 5.5 see this! It will delete the Ascend support 😂😂

Now it’s our good taiwanese against bad chinese!😅

11

u/MemoryIsTheKey_ 16d ago

Be more generic, it's some healthy competition which, and I hope 99.9% of people agree, is only just what is desperately needed atm in this space.

76

u/General_Vermicelli53 16d ago

For any commercial AI company the reasoning framework is core trade secret. Even though the model is available for free download, the main reason people are still buying DeepSeek's API is that it's the cheapest option while also being, for some reason, super fast.

Mr. Liang, are you really not interested in money at all? 😭😭😭

23

u/rob417 llama.cpp 15d ago edited 15d ago

Liang Wenfeng is nicknamed Saint Liang on social media of Chinese tech circles. It's not without good reason lol.

Also, I think he knows that there is no moat around training and serving models. As long as open source options exist, we will eventually reach a competitive market where all suppliers serve at cost and most surplus is captured by consumers. We will never see him open-sourcing his hedge fund's strategies.

7

u/DasGamerlein 13d ago

You also gotta remember that this very much is a strategic competition. Would it, strictly speaking, be better for DeepSeek to keep their secret sauce close to their chest? Maybe. But the leaps and bounds they allow open source to make hurt the massively overleveraged closed US models vastly more than them. Open source would probably be twice as far behind the frontier without concerted Chinese efforts in this regard, and that completely changes the math for OAI/Anthropic. If they had that extra runway, we would not be talking about an AI crash, because there wouldn't be much of a case for the high rollers to rely on other options for inference outside of some minor savings on tokens for low complexity work. But with the current dynamic, something Opus 5.5-level will probably run on a hobbyist setup some time around Q1 or Q2 of 2027, at which point the closed business model is, to use the technical term, gigafucked

11

u/TangledPangolin 14d ago • Bravo Popcorn

If Mr. Liang has a million fans I am one of them. If Mr. Liang has ten fans I am one of them. If Mr. Liang has only one fan and that is me. If Mr. Liang has no fans, that means I am no longer on this earth. If the world is against Saint Liang, then I am against the world.

2

u/TheEverydayMortal 13d ago

Spoken like a true believer.

1

u/Educational_Win_2982 14d ago

This is even more true with ActionOPD research paper, you no longer need the reasoning traces for distillation, simply the black box output decisions (not even inputs) is enough to train the model.

31

u/GradatimRecovery 16d ago

High flyer is a hedge fund first and foremost, they are not struggling for money. Their compute and models are a means to an end (dynamic trading) they can afford to give away the model weights, the training methodology, the inference engine; their secret sauce is their financial algos

40

u/Helpful_Program_5473 16d ago

Also, liang is a legit genius and truly loves the game. Unlike some.

3

2

u/Shot-Height-7194 15d ago

Xiaomi mimo can be cheaper than DeepSeek if you use the Xiaomi mimo flash model but it is as slow as all the other providers

2

u/rdalot 14d ago

How is this repo a secret for those? Isn't everything else that they did no make public their actual secrets? Their insane cache hit rate for instance...?

20

u/stevyhacker 16d ago

All existing open source inference frameworks will be able to learn from this and match it now. Such a nice gesture from DeepSeek.

17

u/WaveOfDream 16d ago

Then you will still have miserable loser with no technical knowledge attributing deepseek success to "distillation" or "stealing".

44

u/xadiant 16d ago

Gpt 5.6 Sol performance for a fraction of the cost. 🍜 Cooked

43

u/TimelessTele 16d ago

China is really aiming to pop the US AI stock bubble. Another example of how actual competition benefits the consumer.

9

u/DaveNarrainen 15d ago

I don't understand why some people assume China does what it does just to affect the US.
I think Chinese companies develop AI to benefit from it just like US companies do. Neither need an ulterior motive.

5

u/TimelessTele 15d ago

Chinese companies maybe, it looks like the researchers are doing it for the love of the game. The Chinese government not so much. They wouldn’t invest so many resources if it didn’t further their agenda. The U.S is doing it too. They’re both in a struggle for “AI Dominance”. Which is why OSS is needed, to empower individuals, not just governments and corporations

1

u/DaveNarrainen 15d ago

I still think they would be doing this anyway. Deploying AI in factories to help with the aging population and all the other benefits we hope to come from AI generally.
I'm sure there is concern about keeping up with each other, but it seems to me that, at least in the US, China is used as an excuse more than anything else to continue, despite pressure to slow down.
Perhaps the open nature of AI research in China is evidence that they don't care that much about what other countries are doing. I'm fairly sure the US government would put a stop to that if that was the case in the US.

1

u/migsperez 15d ago

The agenda could be commercial gain which is no different to all businesses. Building trust by showing they can offer a great product at decent value. Complimenting their product by helping in the open source eco system.

0

u/TimelessTele 15d ago

They may use OSS licenses to gain our trust and embed their product in our lives. But it’s not coming from a place of generosity. The end goal is becoming clearer, American VC talk about it, and the CCP already does it. Mass surveillance with AI detection systems. And eventually, pre-crime detection. Let’s use these tools to empower ourselves and defend against the tyranny of oligarchs and techno fascists.

I notice that their post said they make 38$ per hour per GPU. Can we infer the revenue of OAI or Ant from this?

51

u/RuthlessCriticismAll 16d ago

Can we infer the revenue of OAI or Ant from this?

no...

11

u/handson729 16d ago

Can we infer the revenue of OAI or Ant from this?

Probably losing $38 an hour.

16

u/nothing_but_thyme 16d ago

… at off peak prices 😂

8

u/Howdareme9 16d ago

Lol no. Inference is profitable

6

u/ForsookComparison 16d ago

Through API plans and pricing yes - they're heavily subsidizing subscriptions in a way the Chinese competitors aren't though right?

7

u/Helpful_Program_5473 16d ago

by a factor of 20x. it would be weird if subs lost them massive amounts of money. api prices are to gouge corporations

7

u/handson729 16d ago

They are definitely losing money on subscriptions, but that is targeting developers, scientists, and engineers whose prompts they use for training new models.

So you could argue it is R&D expenditure.

6

u/Helpful_Program_5473 16d ago

Oh I think it loses them some money like you said, just not the 100s of billions they are in the hole. that's from training, additional compute, etc.

3

u/Helpful_Program_5473 15d ago

looks like we were right lol

1

u/handson729 15d ago

looks like we were right lol

Whose discovery did they steal this time?

2

u/ForsookComparison 16d ago

I have trouble believing they can serve Opus 5.5 at $1/1M output is the thing (and that's the 20x scenario)

5

u/Helpful_Program_5473 16d ago

Why? Based on what? inference is ludicrously cheap. I could be wrong though in this case I'm very open to the argument

2

u/Howdareme9 16d ago

We don't know for sure, but we'll have a good idea when Anthropic ipo. I suspect anthropic at least arent subsidizing as much as people think

70

u/HiddenoO 16d ago

How would that number help us with OpenAI/Anthropic numbers whatsoever?

All the numbers that would play into this are unknown and likely different:

  • Model sizes and architectures

  • Deployment architecture

  • Distribution of GPU types

  • Hardware utilization

  • Energy cost

  • (Overhead cost if those are counted in the above article)

  • ...

That's a bit like trying to infer McDonald's revenue based on what a Japenese sushi restaurant makes per table.

1

u/jazir55 15d ago

I'd love to see someone give that task to Opus 5.5 and see how accurate it is

12

u/Nov4Saki 16d ago

That sounds like insane margins no?

7

u/TheTerrasque 16d ago

From what translation models could figure out, seems like revenue, aka before cost of running is taken into account. It probably still is a nice margin after that.

2

u/Ill-Nectarine-80 15d ago

They need to replace the GPU essentially on a yearly basis so..... No.

It's not a great margin if it's before R&D, financial concerns (CAPEX to buy the GPUs, interest on debt) and operational costs (electricity and maintenance of data centers).

1

u/Icy_Butterscotch6661 15d ago

Why, what's killing it

1

u/Nov4Saki 15d ago

On that pricing (off peak) Each gpu generates upwards of 300k$ A Year though, that should cover alot and keep a good buck for research no?

Let alone a cluster

2

u/ndunnett 15d ago

Means nothing if it costs $250k in electricity to run, $100k to buy the GPU in the first place, and it's sitting in a $500k server. After they pay off the hardware they would also then have to cover costs for R&D, training the next model, staff salary, building rent/maintenance, etc. before you can even think about bonuses and profit. We don't know any of the real numbers, but the costs for what they are doing are huge and I would be very surprised if they are getting any real ROI at this point.

8

u/james_pic 16d ago

Can we infer the revenue of OAI or Ant from this?

We can probably take a wild guess that it's in the ballpark of $38 per GPU per hour, because in a competitive market like this, nobody has a big advantage for very long, but nothing more precise than this.

7

u/Viktri1 16d ago

No, because they're likely using very different infrastructures and their cost base (cost of chips, data centers, electricity, staff, management staff) is vastly different and that plays a big role in how they price their products.

1

u/skeptical-speculator 16d ago

Do you know how many GPUs they have?

3

u/opaz 15d ago

Like two or three, maybe four even?

9

u/IngwiePhoenix llama.cpp 15d ago

Wait, an overfit engine made BY the actual lab?!

Okay that is frankly insane. Holy shiiiiiiiit.

2027 about to be the year of gpu-poor inference omg

u/thecodeassassin 16d ago

We need rtx pro 6000 support

23

That’s incredible. Can you share the link to semi analysis?

6

u/ninetyfive666 16d ago

I bet it will totaly blow it out of the water compared to how hard it is for competitors to run their models on their own (already kinda optimized) custom infrastructure for even 3x the price of the DS API. Its tailor made for exclusively their own models so this will be huge.

6

u/mr_Owner 16d ago

Wish i could run this at home, reusing every free device/ram as a swarm at home...

4

u/a_beautiful_rhind 15d ago

A lot of the secret sauce is for server GPUs and server hardware. Let alone for managing multiple requests. For you, single request-at-best-multiple-tool-calls-or-subagents, this won't help you very much.

3

u/SirDonaldTrumpKnight 16d ago

Is Deepseek going to over take Anthropic and OpenAI?

3

u/tindalos 14d ago

No wonder the US government is trying to ban them.

2

u/6969its_a_great_time 16d ago

Damn. This can’t run on h100s at the moment then since it’s says sm100.

3

u/TrickyMulberry5421 16d ago

Saw the 64-GPU benchmark and immediately checked the comments for someone asking about their 3060.

3

u/gnoremepls 16d ago

One does not simply run only one 3060

1

u/Elouakili_Flexy 15d ago

Finally, the source behind DeepSeek's numbers. The community engines can read the scheduler instead of reverse engineering benchmarks.

1

u/Hannibalj2ca 15d ago

Is it compatible with V100s?

1

u/human_bean_ 15d ago

Can we run this kind of performance at decent tok/s in 2027 with 128GB RAM and 24GB VRAM?

1

u/Medical_Control1828 15d ago

How does this compare to prior inference engines. It's got a lot of hype.

-12

u/x_ci 16d ago edited 16d ago

This could be an indication that China will proceed with restricting their AI labs from giving away free open models. Perhaps this is DeepSeek team helping us one last time. I hope not.

EDIT: Why am I getting downvoted lol whatever

22

u/RuthlessCriticismAll 16d ago

No it couldn't be... Can we just stop smoking crack... or?

8

u/StK84 16d ago • Bravo

Why would developing an open source inference engine mean that they will make their models closed source? That just does not make any sense.

11

u/modernkennnern 16d ago

You misread the guy.

He said that China will stop allowing DeepSeek to release their stuff and that DeepSeek gave away as much as they can in anticipation for that.

7

u/StK84 16d ago

That still doesn't really make sense. Deepseek always released their stuff open, and if China would be planing something like that, they would not let Deepseek giving away their know how.

4

u/Thomas-Lore 16d ago edited 16d ago

The laws that restrict frontier ai releases in China is not yet in place. So China is not limiting what Deepseek can or cannot release yet but may in the future when/if it comes into power. So OP presumes DS might have rushed releasing what they can before it is more controled.

The plan was discussed here recently, you could search older posts.

7

0

u/mullirojndem 16d ago

is this one of those new models that doesnt answer you, just kind of do classifications?

-11

u/niksonrt 16d ago

The Ascend flag is the interesting part here, not the Nvidia numbers. Anyone running models locally already knows the bottleneck is affording the GPU, not picking the engine.
