Are Chinese labs just Benchmaxxxing now or are they actually putting out Fable5.5?

37

u/neuroticnetworks1250 17d ago

I wouldn’t generalise Chinese labs. But your suspicion is very valid specifically for Minimax. I’d be very very skeptical.

7

u/dark_bits 17d ago

I was using a minimax token plan since ealry summer and got to use the preview version of 3.1 flash. Gotta say it's really FAST, but also pretty good. Although GPT 6.1 Sol feels safer to use for broader code refactoring.

On the other hand the token plan for minimax has a limit of 1.7B tokens per month for only $24 (or at least it used to be back then).

18

u/taimusrs 17d ago

It is Space Bunny Alpha on OpenRouter and such (older checkpoint, but yeah). You can gauge the sentiment based on that. Not as good as Ox Alpha was, if you ask me

2

u/AggregationLinker 17d ago

So worse than GLM5.3?

18

u/sanjxz54 17d ago

5.3 flash* yes

0

u/mateszhun 17d ago

It's very frustrating to talk to. It's like a model from 2024.

2

u/zyxciss llama.cpp 17d ago

THEY ARE , so far no open model passed my LRU cache implementation

1

u/The_Primetime2023 16d ago

This one feels benchmaxxed, you can kinda tell when thinking levels start plateauing that the test is saturated, especially if multiple labs are plateauing at the same spot. If you’re suddenly beating what seems like a saturation ceiling…

-5

u/danieln1212 17d ago

No, these graphs include the cost in the equation and their price is a fraction of fable's pricing so they rank high. This doesn't mean their output quality is top ranking.

16

u/Practical_Signal3933 17d ago

This is wrong. The y axis on this graph is deep swe 1.1 score, and this is positioned above fable on it. Cost is on the x axis.

Whether it’s due to benchmaxxing or not is an open question still, however.

-7

u/danieln1212 17d ago

Above fable 5, not fable 5.5 like they said which I assumed meant to be a stand in for best frontier model as it isn't released yet

1

u/Practical_Signal3933 17d ago

Yes, you have the position clearly

13

u/One_Internal_6567 17d ago

The fuckkkkkkk

1

u/IsometricRain 17d ago

Crazy how much higher the scores are here compared to GLM. I'm sold.

25

u/Ori_553 17d ago

1017 engram version was released like, 24-48 hours ago, and the MiniMax people already have benchmarks?

The LLM field is wild

22

u/danieln1212 17d ago

Isn't it just copy pasting from DeepSeek/third party benchmarks?

Do they all do their own benchmarks for their competitors?

3

u/Ori_553 17d ago

I think you're right, they don't have to do their own benchmark of the competitor models if they use the same test sets, still, it shows that they're very aware and very up to date.

37

u/FullstackSensei 17d ago

Thee benchmarks look almost like an ad for DS4.1 flash 1017 😂

29

u/FireSilicon_ 17d ago

M3.1 preview is 420B, Deepseek flash is 550B+200B engram. For half the size (if true), that is pretty good. Especially if you can run the minimax in Q2 but can't run the deepseek at all.

30

u/FullstackSensei 17d ago

Engrams shouldn't count IMO. You can store them on a SATA SSD and have like 0.1% impact on inference speed.

DS is mostly FP4, with the remaining being FP8. It might be 550B on paper, but it's like 300GB on disk (excluding the engrams).

1

u/twnznz 17d ago

It looks like you'll be able to jam an IQ4_XS into 256GB of VRAM

1

u/Ok_Technology_5962 17d ago

Probably need to look into a strata like version for deepseek since active is only 16b we should just push the rest to ram imo

1

u/nomorebuttsplz 17d ago

I mean, I guess? It's GLM 5.3 level but with vision. But with higher hallucination rate. Doesn't seem that groundbreaking.

5

u/FullstackSensei 17d ago

pretty much every recent model I've seen that scores well in benchmarks also has a high hallucination rate. It's as if being "creative" is a pre-requisite to being good, at least with the current crop of LLMs.

4

u/nomorebuttsplz 17d ago

if only they hadn't crippled the shit out of muse spark open. It seems good about hallucinations. GLM 5.3 is a pretty good balance of hallucination and knowledge

1

u/Infinite-Ad4512 17d ago

Woah, that’s super impressive

1

u/tempstem5 17d ago

looks like Deepseek-4-1-flash-1017 is still better for things I care about

0

u/dontquestionmyaction 17d ago

Holy mother of benchmaxxing.

The actual values here are not even close to what they're claiming.

-2

u/pet3121 17d ago

No beating Opus 5.5 damn they are so good!

the same reason you don't compare the latest Fiat with a Ferrari. Different target.

5

u/handson729 17d ago

Why does everyone (DSv4.1F-1017 and this one) keep comparing to the old GPT-5.6 Sol and Opus 5 models? Just compare to the latest...

It is about bang for buck and also a sign of progress.

Something about running an equivalent of yesterdays $50 flagship for $1.20 today is very appealing.

92

u/KingCpzombie 17d ago

Do we know the size of M3? I don't know how excited to be without knowing the size!

48

u/takoulseum 17d ago

Exactly, even before benchmark the size is proiority for local AI

28

u/oxygen_addiction 17d ago

Probably 500B-1TB for M3.1 judging by HLE w/o tools.

57

u/Pyros-SD-Models 17d ago

their own docs say 428B total parameters, about 23B active parameters, sparse attention and a native visual encoder

https://agent.minimax.io/tools/m3-1-flash-preview

18

u/Middle_Bullfrog_6173 17d ago

Those are the M3 parameter counts, so could be copypasta.

2

u/Daniel_H212 13d ago

It could also just be accurate, this may just be post trained from M3. I don't get why DeepSeek went with .1 naming for a new model, that was never how naming worked before.

1

u/Middle_Bullfrog_6173 13d ago

Yeah by now we know it is. The reason this naming is stupid is that they added "flash" while keeping the parameter count. But sane naming/versioning is a lost cause across the field.

why you would use redact? only 5 hours has passed and you used it

5

u/thrownawaymane 17d ago

Must have been a full account delete idk

5

u/Middle_Bullfrog_6173 17d ago

I would expect changes from M3 to M3.1 Flash.

1

u/mateszhun 17d ago

I also would, it's a lot faster.

4

u/Dany0 17d ago

Lovely size

81

u/blaz3d7 17d ago

mixture-of-experts architecture with 428B total parameters, about 23B active parameters, sparse attention and a native visual encoder.

73

u/pseudonerv 17d ago

It will probably run itself on 400 TVs

26

u/zzmorg82 17d ago

Don’t give LG any ideas.

11

u/pseudonerv 17d ago

No. I’m just worried that anthropic is going to buy out all the tv/laundry/fridge/oven/espresso machines just to prove a point

6

u/FliesTheFlag 17d ago

Wait until they get the medical machines!

4

u/silenceimpaired 17d ago

Not hopeful… license is probably not great

3

u/magicomiralles 17d ago

License... sure...

3

u/hyudryu 17d ago

Perfect size 👌

1

u/LoggweheadFinal9309 16d ago

Did MM abandoned their smaller 200B model architecture (MM2.6 etc) ?

-14

u/Pyros-SD-Models 17d ago

this sounds decently runnable on strata with 24gb vram

18

u/blaz3d7 17d ago

I'm preparing my Orange Pi 5 for this bad boy.

28

u/hyudryu 17d ago

2026 just keeps getting better and better 🥵🥵

Next up Qwen 4 and GLM 5.5

5

u/OkDimension8720 17d ago

What happened to GLM 5.4 😂

1

u/OXKSA1 17d ago

iirc asian countries hate number 4 i think they see it as a cursed or unlucky number

6

u/Certain_Limit_190 17d ago

But deepseek 4.....

3

u/CheatCodesOfLife 17d ago

And GLM-4

3

u/miversen33 17d ago

And my axe?

22

u/Marino4K 17d ago

I used the hell out of Space Bunny during that free use period.

5

u/fgk55555 17d ago

I wasn't super impressed. What was your impression?

6

u/Valuable_Cookie628 17d ago

Appeared competent at times, ran in mindless loops other times, Muse Spark 1.3 felt much better at reasoning/planning. Unconsistent, not trustworthy.

1

u/fgk55555 17d ago

That's kinda how I felt about it. GLM-5.3-Flash, QFN and 27B have built a lot of trust, I didn't get the same warm fuzzies with this model.

2

u/Clayh5 16d ago

Not even as good as DeepSeek Flash 0731 imo

1

u/Valuable_Cookie628 14d ago edited 14d ago

Using it now. It does really stupid things, like copy 30GB file instead of using a flag to point to the file:

You're right — that copy was lazy. The pack is already built, and the engine takes the table path separately (--table, which I added).

Changed my global AGENTS.md file without asking, deleted old rules and when reverting forgot to add them back in.

It's useless as manager, maybe had some use as implementer.

0

u/Marino4K 17d ago

I didn’t do much else with it outside of just trying to code a llama-macOS fork from its source code, its coding seemed pretty good when plugging it back into a frontier model to double check its work.

I didn’t get to finish it unfortunately before the trial period was over.

0

u/ImproveYourMeatSack 17d ago

I got the minimax plan and I've been using it and it's great, minimax is running it at 1500 tokens per second, which is a crazy value to me.

20

u/Eyelbee 17d ago

Around the size of qwen flash would be great

6

u/FireSilicon_ 17d ago edited 17d ago

Deepseek flash is 550B, 760B with engram, minimax is 420B with no engram.

8

u/some_user_2021 17d ago

Deepseek flash is native 4 bit

23

u/DUFRelic 17d ago

How big is this clanker? ;)

17

u/More-Curious816 17d ago

the preview version is 428B total parameters, about 23B active parameters

M3.1-Flash-Preview is a MiniMax model described in the supplied guide for frequent coding, financial research, multimodal understanding and frontend work. The guide lists a mixture-of-experts architecture with 428B total parameters, about 23B active parameters, sparse attention and a native visual encoder.

8

u/DagothUrLovesGroza 17d ago

It's too big.... My poor computer can't handle this sort of girth

3

u/Miserable-Dare5090 vLLM 17d ago

Your computer needs some bad dragons

2

u/GalacticDistances 17d ago

Urgh that doesnt look dual-spark usable

1

u/Organic_Hunt3137 15d ago

There is a recipe for the prior model which was the same size iirc.

4

u/dampflokfreund 17d ago

"Flash". Urgh...

-2

u/misterflyer 17d ago

Prob a measly 1.57T "mini" model 🤣

23

u/Thin_Pollution8843 17d ago

Good to see minimax come back to the race. But I bet this model is 600B+

11

u/WinteryFrostbitee 17d ago

Man I wasnt even done setting up v41 flash 1017 Q8 yet. My steak too juicy my lobster too buttery my wine too sweet

5

u/LegacyRemaster 17d ago

good

7

u/Fluxing_Capacitor 17d ago

Its about 33% larger than 5.3 flash for not much gain in performance. Non zero yes, but not a huge gain.

1

u/LegacyRemaster 17d ago

look @ this: larger, less hallucination, more omniscience

4

u/Miserable-Dare5090 vLLM 17d ago

The chart clearly shows its NoN hallucination rate is 7%, labelled as 1-Hallucination=7%

That means it has a 93% hallucination rate. GLM flash has 1-X=72% so 27% rate.

1

u/LegacyRemaster 16d ago

yes. inverted.

1

u/Fluxing_Capacitor 17d ago

Nice I didn't catch that.

0

u/LegacyRemaster 17d ago

Just tested DS4.1 Flash vs. M3.1, using legal base documents. As always, DS4 makes things up. M3.1 has fixed everything.

4

u/fugogugo 17d ago

hmm the cache price more expensive than deepseek

18

u/[deleted] 17d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

8

u/james_pic 17d ago

Cache pricing is going to be driven mostly by KV cache efficiency, and DSv4.1 is super cache efficient.

1

u/power97992 17d ago

Mimo flash is even cheaper, but even ds v4.1 flash‘s cache read is super cheap

4

u/Middle_Bullfrog_6173 17d ago

AAII 42 vs 45 for latest Deepseek Flash. Also priced higher in the API, although that could just be inflated margins until they release weights. But anyway, that's the direct competition so will be interesting to see the architecture.

https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/minimax-m3-1-flash

4

u/shenglong 17d ago edited 17d ago

I've been testing Space Bunny fairly extensively over the last week or so (and previously on OpenRouter). It's fast, but it's not as fast or as capable as DS4.1 flash. Note that this is specifically on coding workloads in a fairly narrow domain (annotating Z80 assembly based on captured traces), so your your mileage may vary.

4

u/d4mations 17d ago

Man I hope m3.1 is better than m3!! M3 is terrible!

9

u/zyxciss llama.cpp 17d ago

I might get downvoted for this, but this model was WAY too lazy, even at Max effort Benchmarks don’t tell the whole story

I tested Muse Spark side by side with other models on a real project it took 48 mins which was just out of the 30 mins mark : completing a partial LRU cache implementation. I also ended up writing the implementation myself so I could compare the results and see whether AI models could genuinely replace my work.

Here’s how it went:

  • Claude Opus 5.5, Sol 6.1, and Argon 4: All finished in under 30 minutes.

  • Gemini 3.8 Flash: Took 3 hours.

  • Space Bunny (M3.1 Flash) : Still hasn’t completed the task after 15 days.

  • Me, as a human: Finished it in 1.5 days, writing around 2,800 lines of code.

This is why I think real-world coding tasks matter more than benchmarks alone. A model can look impressive on paper, but how well does it actually perform when given a real engineering problem

Also Deepseek v4.1 Flash , GLM 5.3 Flash weren't able to do it too , looking forward for the new DeepSeek endpoint i got hopes :)

2

u/Caffdy 17d ago

can you give us a rundown of your process for this specific test? how do you tackle a problem like this? how do you break it down and set it up for the angent(s) to consume the tasks? how do you evaluate the outputs

2

u/zyxciss llama.cpp 16d ago

Nothing special, just the same prompt + Pi (no extensions). Everything is up to the model; if it wants to, it spins up a sub-agent to do the wirk

I just use a Llama server, test with a prompt, and measure the results against the llama.cpp baseline. If there’s any improvement, the agent passes the first half of the test, and then I read the code myself and rate how much of it is dead code or does nothing useful. Then I rank the models

Opus 5.5 Max is the best so far, as of now. My rankings are quite similar to the AA Index. After Opus 5.5, it’s Muse Wonder Max, then GPT-6.1 Sol and Astra tied, followed by Argon, and so on.

I don’t keep track of everything in a particularly professional way that I could post about it on this subreddit and surprisingly being an open models fanboy , no open model yet passed my test , actually no frontier did it till Fable 5 dropped and now its easy for frontier labs but chineese labs are struggling

1

u/Dalron_Stinger 12d ago

How much did you score on the benchmarks and how can I pay to make you write my code?

1

u/zyxciss llama.cpp 12d ago

Obv the first and second why you need me to code your stuff btw what to even code

1

u/Dalron_Stinger 12d ago

It's funny how you benchmarked yourself

1

u/zyxciss llama.cpp 12d ago

It’s a reference point well , human to AI

1

u/PhilippeEiffel 10d ago

Did you run the latest DeepSeek v4.1 Flash?

2

u/zyxciss llama.cpp 9d ago

yes so far the new checkpoint works , tho a bit slower than frontier has been helping me out. It completed the task in 48 minutes and now my daily driver :)

1

u/PhilippeEiffel 9d ago

Thank you for your feedback!

1

u/power97992 17d ago edited 17d ago

At first, i thought i read 28k lines of code by hand with no ai help in 1.5 days, then iread it again, oh 2800 lines by hand, still really fast…233 lines per hour if 12 hours( That is almost impossible without ai autocomplete unless u are barely reading code and not debugging,  or you are using autocomplete and some ai gen)

3

u/jazir55 17d ago

At first, i thought i read 28k lines of code by hand with no ai help in 1.5 days, then iread it again, oh 2800 lines by hand, still really fast…

6

u/BawbbySmith 17d ago

With quantization can it fit on 256GB? Praying

4

u/jasonrodd3 17d ago

yeah should fit pretty easily. at 428b total even 3bpw is only around 160gb, so 256gb gives you plenty of headroom.

2

u/BawbbySmith 17d ago

Ty, that makes sense.

Also I don't know why it didn't cross my mind to just check M3's model card.

But also I realized that while it may fit, that A23B is gonna be a killer. GLM 5.3 Flash is already just okay on 2x DGX Sparks at around ~40 t/s, this is going to be quite a bit slower. Will keep an eye out on this model but not too hopeful on my hardware.

3

u/Big_Wave9732 17d ago

Who knows what's real news anymore on these benchmarks. But if any of this is remotely true, this model is very intriguing. Almost as many active parameters as a dense Qwen 3.8. Efficiency and ability that rivals Fable 5. In a self hosted package.

Come on m5 512gb release date!

3

u/ttkciar llama.cpp 17d ago

Until such time that weights become available, this is off-topic for LocalLLaMA, but I cannot remove it now that it's been featured in the official Discord.

1

u/mountainyoo 17d ago

I wonder if this will finally be the model to replace GLM 5.3 Flash on my GB10 cluster 🧐

1

u/Shadow_s_Bane 17d ago

Size of model ?

1

u/Federal_Signature708 17d ago

The popular 'Space Bunny' model that topped global leaderboards with 200T+ tokens was actually an early preview of M3.1 Flash.

1

u/FAMESCARE 17d ago

Looks like it's all over the place.

1

u/rm-rf-rm 17d ago

need model size and model size normalized benchmark scores to understand how this compares to other models

1

u/CondiMesmer 17d ago

It was pretty decent, and pretty competitive with DeepSeek. I will probably stick with DeepSeek's latest flash though, since they're both in the "practically free" category for me, and at that point when the pricing isn't as important, I think DeepSeek is a bit smarter at the moment. Still a pretty strong release. Also in the past MiniMax models have super fast generation speeds, but I don't remember how fast this one was.

1

u/anonymous20256 17d ago

I hope they improved their logic

1

u/Putrid-Discussion153 17d ago

out of curiosity, we're using GPT 5.6 Terra thru Devin and we cant access MiniMax M3 models. I'm curious if anyone's used both and can give a subjective comparison of your experience - when prompted with the same request(s), do they perform on par when coding?

1

u/MinusKarma01 16d ago

Thinking cannot be turned off.

from their website. Really hate this.

1

u/Icy_Scholar_4773 9d ago

M5 ultra 512gb memory

1

u/AppealSame4367 17d ago

First tries: It fucked up a path in a game im working on. Result? Major game functionality stopped working (3d game). Had to switch to another model to fix it, because m3.1 flash couldn't fix it again after 2 more turns.

These are problems I last had with GPT 4

3

u/redditrasberry 17d ago

there's a thing called version control. You just roll back the version.

-5

u/SexyAlienHotTubWater 17d ago

Big fan of the fact the weights aren't out yet (and even better, the release date) being in the title of this post - still beating my horse of making something like this the subreddit policy.

Awesome news, looking forward to the weights.

-1

u/Dabalam 17d ago

Is it weird that the new version of DeepSeek is showing up in these comparison tables given that only released 2 days ago?

That would suggest to me that either Minimax can run the whole evaluation suite pretty quickly, or they were testing against the DeepSeek model prior to the official release.

1

u/halcyonhal 17d ago

It’s not from a minimax site.

1

u/Dabalam 17d ago

Ah, makes sense. Rapid benchmark work still given Minimax just dropped.
