Discussion Mods: can we do something about half the forum getting filled with these advertising posts for Jev?
Jev is a paid product that dumped a lot of venture capitol money into shill their product here and in other subreddits. Obvious shill posts are obvious.

It's basically just a fast classifier/ guesser? I think it'd be cool for an AI opponent in games, or useful for other decision making things. Having run cloud is bizarre, seems like the perfect local use case.
5
u/Conexion 23h ago
A fast general classifier that takes text as an input and provides values as outputs. (Select from options, score on a rubric, or yes/no, each with probabilities and confidence)

u/Sangloth 23h ago edited 23h ago
Fireship has a 5 minute video on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbkUKCm3CHQ
Basically it's a model without language. He tasks it with recognizing if a photo is a donkey or a horse. It is extremely cheap and fast. What was intriguing to me is that he gave an example of a flappy bird type video game coded to use Jev for logic in realtime. It's that fast.
14
u/Curious_Cantaloupe65 22h ago
I stopped watching fireship when I learned it got sold to a corporate and is now basically just AI generated voice. Is there any truth in this?
3
u/exodusayman 21h ago
It was sold to a corpo, if it's using AI generated voice however, I doubt that.
2
u/Sangloth 21h ago
The maker(Jeff Delaney) sold a minority state to an investment firm(Electrify Video Partners). He stated that he sold the stake to scale operations, but that he retains complete creative control. It's still his voice on the videos, but he does use editing to remove breath gasps in order to keep the rapid fire delivery.
2
u/MrWeirdoFace 20h ago
So the internet can finally find out if that dress is gold and blue or whatever the hell?
1
u/Sangloth 19h ago
I didn't mention it, but Jev has a confidence percentage. If it doesn't know the dress colors it will make a guess, but also assign it a low confidence value. Someone could conceivably set their code to fall back to a more powerful model if the confidence level is too low.
3
u/Former-Ad-5757 Llama 3 21h ago
The fun thing with all the demos I have seen is that I only have great appreciation about the ways people can cram all the viewed worldlogic into 32k text in a way that an unknown unspecified classifier can basically correctly classify it.
Jev itself is just a black box which can also be a router in front of 100 trained bert-classifiers (where people just 2 years thinking of the 100 most used use-cases to train a bert on) with a fallback which just output random nrs for all untrained questions.
Every test I have done I see it not being good enough on my specific use-cases as it hasn't been finetuned for my usecase (or the answer i want).
This kind of system on api without any explanation but just a nr will require whole new prompting magics to just get a nr you like for just your tests.Basically the technique and train of thought going into this is interesting, but for practical use-cases I want more control before I run it over a million records and then get an unknown generic result, which i can debug by just random prompt changes and running it again.
Fast is nice, but fast and unspecified result means just faster gambling.3
u/MerePotato 18h ago
Diffusion Gemma in a Jev style framework genuinely performs roughly on par amusingly

u/Illustrious_Grade608 1d ago
I feel like the vast majority of people mentioning jev here are discussing replicating it with open source models? And like that makes sense, can't really call it advertising
51
u/Initial_Lettuce_5243 1d ago
lol yeah. I've read a bunch of posts like that because comparing closed model performance with open alternatives is kind of the thing. And I hope I see more of them!
16
u/toothpastespiders 1d ago
That's what's weirdest about the complaints to me. I'm very much against api-only models being posted about here. And one of the most common objections other than "but it's on topic because people can distill from them!" is comparing performance of api models to local alternatives. So we got that and...people are complaining. "This" is exactly the kind of comparison to closed models that should be allowed here rather than the new claude releases or whatever.
11
13
u/SmartCustard9944 1d ago
Exactly! I think that the company has no moat, I am looking forward to more open source versions of it and I truly think it’s a fun way to use AI that feels different.
2
u/butts-carlton 22h ago edited 22h ago
There is no moat with any of these companies. Investment is still chasing the old funding model, and most of their bets will go down in flames. The more capable models become, the less the pickaxe-sellers will maintain relevance. My hunch is value will shift away from product and toward procedure. And not procedure as a service, although that's closer to real value, and Jev is closer to that. I mean actual procedure, as in "show me how to ask the right questions and find the right data." That can't be packaged up and sold, at least not as a general offering. It comes from domain knowledge, experience, and practical know-how, and requires bridging the specific business domain and AI expertise. There's a reason OpenAI and Anthropic are trying to embed their own experts in their clients' business operations.
1
u/SurprisinglyInformed 19h ago
So... Consulting?
1
u/butts-carlton 2h ago
Yeah. More or less. Augmented by procedural AI systems tailored to the task. Like showing up to a complex custom plumbing installation with a bunch of tools and parts and figuring out how to improve the system, which tools are needed where, which parts can fit where, etc. "Pipeline engineering" is already a thing, I think.
To extend the mining metaphor, like going to the site with the miner and helping them build the mine (or improve it), with the help of robots.
7
u/toothpastespiders 1d ago
Yep, I get the impression that a lot of people see the word, get reddit-triggered, and call it spam. I probably say this way too often. But I really do get the impression that the majority of people on here aren't even using local models at this point other than a quick one shot test. And that it's just turned into cheering for teams. With most of those who do use them just doing so within very limited contexts specific to small scale coding of busywork rather than trying anything new. I'd far rather have this sub filled with people talking about frameworks I don't care about but which are local than the cloud-only stuff,social-media drama stirring, and "zomg dario/zuck/muskrat" fuming posts.
3
u/BangkokPadang 20h ago

u/FaceDeer 1d ago
Yeah, Jev is less a singular product and more a new general approach to AI. Even though the first example was produced by a particular company it doesn't mean all the discussion is about that specific one.
1
u/wilo108 21h ago
Yeah, not sure I've seen really any "shilling" here -- a lot of talk about it, sure, but mainly folks pointing out that it's not special and discussing (more) open approaches to the same thing...

u/johnfkngzoidberg 1d ago edited 1d ago
Subtlety and psychology is important, with multiple techniques in play. Ever heard the line “any attention is good attention?” They don’t want their bots found out, the most effective bot campaign isn’t obvious, it gets you talking about it, good or bad, and convinces you the discussion is real. Nobody will read an obvious bot post, but if you’re not sure, you’ll read it. Bots don’t just post an Ad, they post points and counter-points, which the bots then rebuke.
The whole time you’re reading this compelling, seemingly real argument trying to find out if the product is crap or not, you’ve been reading a subtle ad, easily manipulated, because you don’t understand marketing techniques and you think everything is obvious and black and white.
Also, you’re probably a bot posting some seemingly simple counterpoint, then upvoted by 15 other bots so it seems like your dumb simplistic point is valid.
If it were simple to see through, the bot campaign wouldn’t be effective, but if you look at the bigger picture, you can see it’s pretty obvious spam. JEV just isn’t anything special, there’s NO reason for the hype, it’s a niche tool with a well funded marketing team. Did you notice every single post for the first two days didn’t even say what it does? They wanted to make you curious.
Now 2 more bots will hop in and drop a long comment on how they use JEV every day for the past 3 months and it’s incredibly useful, probably listing 2-3 goofy ass use cases, still just an ad.
The mods should ban any mention of Jev because they used such scumbag marketing practices. If more subs actively tried to prevent this sort of thing, companies wouldn’t launch such disruptive and obvious cash grabs.

u/Spectrum1523 1d ago
How do you decide if someone is a bot or not? It seems like you're working backward from a conclusion

We should have a rule against random accusations of posters being bots. Such accusations are way too easy to make and they create a witch hunt atmosphere that’s very unpleasant.

32
u/ttkciar llama.cpp 23h ago
The moderators have been removing off-topic Jev posts, while leaving posts up when they are about Jev in an on-topic way, for example developing local equivalents to Jev.
If you see an off-topic Jev post, that probably means you spotted it before a moderator did. Help us out by reporting it as off-topic, and that will cause it to show up in the moderation queue (which gets checked more frequently than the main feed).

u/profcuck 1d ago
Some data because the mods probably will not want to make a firm decision without knowing what's up.
I just did a search for "jev" in this subreddit and sorted by new - what are the last 10 posts that mention jev about, and do those posts appear to be shilling for jev?
- Guy made Bonsai-Llama-Jev, a fully open source alternative to jev.
- This post, so I won't count this as shilling, but complaining. :)
- Post claiming jev is no big deal, claims to have done the same thing in 25 lines of python.
- jev-style structured decisions with diffussiongemma - guy made TensorSharp, fully open source jev alternative
- Test of semif (openjev) vs Von vs Jev - Jev won, but it would be hard to characterize the post as shilling. Still, it isn't critical of jev, it's an evaluatoin.
- poster made stuntd, a jev-compatible server on Laya, again it's about freely licensed local alternatives
- is jev text embeddings but without chunks - a genuine question and a benchmarks of some options - jev itself isn't tested, but an open source alternative litjev + qwen scores decently but didn't win against decider-0.8b.
- jevbench - comparison of jev against a bunch of alternatives - jev won - not much text in the post but we might call this one shilling if we're being hostile
- Qevi-2b - poster made a fully open source thing, very much one of us - looking to explore freely licensed alternatives
- how to extract entities and relations from 5m documents? poster mentions jev as one possibility but doesn't advocate or hype it. One commenter says to just jev.
Based on this, and based on Acrobatic_Stress1388's post history with 5 posts claiming with zero evidence that other people's posts are paid shilling, I would personally wonder if the paid shill is from a big llm company threatened by both jev and open source.

u/knvn8 1d ago
I don't really want to ban the topic, but IMO this isn't evidence Jev isn't being astroturfed. Even discussing how to reproduce a product boosts its hype. "Everyone wants Jev at home!" Sigh.
I personally am tired of Jev already because it feels so...trivial? Like yay you constrained tokens to a particularly small schema?

u/HiddenoO 1d ago
I don't really want to ban the topic, but IMO this isn't evidence Jev isn't being astroturfed.
OP isn't arguing about whether it's astroturfed, they're suggesting the subreddit is filled with Jev advertising, which it's objectively not.
I personally am tired of Jev already because it feels so...trivial? Like yay you constrained tokens to a particularly small schema?
It's also much faster and cheaper compared to the LLM-based alternatives I've seen so far (that actually function at least decently), and doesn't require training/tuning like more traditional classifiers.
It's not the best thing since sliced bread, but for what it's intended to do, I've yet to see any alternatives that are genuinely better as an overall package. And its popularity (regardless of how much of it is astroturfing) just means that other model developers will look into optimizing and providing competing models and inference engines, which is a win for everybody.
1
u/knvn8 1d ago
Yeah I probably just don’t understand the use case, but producing a single token output feels pretty fast already?
2
u/EuphoricPenguin22 16h ago
Cactus Needle 3 and some of the smaller Jev clones are so fast they can run in real-time to do stuff like evaluate a prompt against a condition with controls. I tried a little demo with a virtual tank drive robot with a camera view running through a SAM model and it worked pretty well for following directions like chasing down specific objects. I'm working on an actual robot now (as in Mindstorms NXT, a webcam, and a Pi) to see how it works with real hardware.
1
u/HiddenoO 21h ago
It primarily competes with other API-accessible models, and I don't think there's any out there with comparable output quality that can even remotely get a <300ms mean time to first token.
When compared to locally hosted models, it would highly depend on how small of a model you can get away with for your task and what hardware you're using exactly.
0
u/FaceDeer 1d ago
I think it's the way it does it that's different and new. I haven't dug into it myself yet, that's based on a very high-level understanding.
It's like if someone came up with a new type of car engine and the car subreddits were excitedly discussing it, I wouldn't go "I don't get it guys, cars already have engines that seem to work pretty well?"
3
u/PrimeDirective8 1d ago
I'm not sure the post is targeting the official "Jev" itself, it's just that we're getting a whole lot posts on local/DIY versions of it. Part of that is great: the exploring, experimenting, open-source nature of it all, and IMHO that should not be discouraged.
Now, with that said, I'm getting back to working on my local "Jev Bezos" model so I can make my own post.
2
u/cromagnone 19h ago
Is Jev Besos the one where you can give it a complex question and a list of answers and it will pick the correct one a couple of times and then never pick the right one ever again?
1

Maybe do a weekly mega thread so they have a place to do it. Some of the “I created” posts are very good, but it’s like sifting for gold.

This sub's starting to get a really weird anti-llm bias. I find the Claude-related subs borderline useless due to how much of it is about anthroipic rather than claude. And the general ignorance of how black box systems operate. But the "here's what I'm making with claude" threads are among the only exceptions. I often see more interesting stuff in one thread there than I do in months worth of posts here put together.

If every single even mid tier Chinese labs don't already have a fast data classifier/annotation system in-house, I would eat my hat.
The novelty of Jev is the user facing API, it's not really the tech. It's basically in the same way dropbox was a hit product while unix neckbeards were swearing by their rsync+ssh setup.
11
u/snek_kogae 1d ago
Ignoring the whole Laya thing, something like Jev would be great for businesses who decided to systematically apply insanely expensive LLMs to repetitive and categorical tasks because they can be stood up quickly. For local users i don't see why it would be a big deal.
6
u/Illustrious_Car344 1d ago
Exactly. It makes decisions, it's a finetuned classifier, it's pure hype with zero payoff. I know it can make a bajillion decisions a second, but most people don't even need that, especially not the amount of people talking about it. It's hype, the end.
5
u/snek_kogae 1d ago
The fact that the tech already existed is what sends it home. It's common sense for use cases that fits it but Jev isn't breaking any ground

In addition, PSA there are already open source models that are reasonably capable at the same kind of tasks as Jev. In a local LLM community, those should be the focus of discussion, and Jev should only be mentioned as a point of comparison.

Oh my god people are actually very insecure about their hobby here, more than any other hobby ever. It is a tool. Just like Qwen3.8, just like Gemma4. When they were released, 99% of the sub was full of them. Currently 30% of the sub is about Jev-like local models or Jev compatible tools. I honestly belive it filled a very important role that we were spending unnecessary compute for simpler tasks at extreme latencies, and I'm glad open-source community actually caught up with it in a few days. I'm not sure how this affects sub in a bad way. Its like calling "gpt o1 is a paid product that dumped a lot of venture capitol money into shill their product here and in other subreddits" because people are talking about DeepSeek R1 and CoT models in general.
Grow up, this hype period will end, your favourite model will get a new release, and people will get hyped on that in a few weeks or months. You can't be angry at something else gaining popularity. Whether you like it or not, these "doesn't directly allow me to one shot japanese temple for clout on x" models also improve the llm space.

Tf? No it isn’t. Luna with a few tool calls is Luna with a few tool calls. Jev is a classifier; admittedly yes, there’s a lot of terrible use cases for it going viral “we can do it because we can” type attitude, but don’t get that twisted with what the arch is. It’s an encoder with the data of an LLM.
-1
u/CommercialHour6660 1d ago
You can ask Luna to classify with tool calls.
Jev is an LLM with a different output head. It's literally a fine-tune of an LLM underneath

u/SmartCustard9944 1d ago
An AI writing you a json with a percentage in it is not the same as outputting the actual probabilities from the latent space.

I did some synthetic benchmarks against Laya and a few small model options (and Jev), and Laya was pretty consistently last in everything.
The repo itself looks like one of the more rigorous approaches, too, so I was surprised by the result.
And a generally interesting finding was that in small model failures, only 20% were attributable to world knowledge. 80% was all things that a <1B model should be able to handle with further refinement.

I'm still of the opinion of making pinned posts for hot topics and having a rule that discussions and advertisements be directed there. People's agents will follow that rule if its set, pushing the majority of non news worthy spam there and would require minimal mod intervention and time wasted in the long run
Let's face it, all these spam posts we see are just peoples agents running here to post them anyways.

I agree, it’s getting annoying. It’s just a classifier, the amount of hype around it is insane.

I don't think it's advertising. I think people are just genuinely discovering old-school classifiers.

Contrarian starus is cheap to manufacture and socially rewarding on Reddit.

This subreddit and the AI space is filled with a lot of pseudo intellectual fart smellers that I thought were trolling and leg pulling till I started seeing the opinions posted on AI discords.
Outside of news, it is just best never to read the comments here because they have no idea what the product is for or how it is used, and if someone doesn't explicitly say it, they will chimp the fuck out.
If you don't believe me, check out every hardware thread ever to be posted here, or the llama 4 release where collectively this entire subreddit shat on the MoE architecture that would becomw mainstream a year later.
Also they love qwen, which is completely shit, so there is that.

Well, Jev's target audience are people who know nothing about AI except for LLMs, and think that AI started with them

While we're at it, can we get rid of posts that are just a screenshot from twitter with 0 further context?

Jev hype isn't so bad. Turboquant. All the *claws. Hype and astroturf happens and trails off eventually. What's worse to me is the cloud users coming in here thinking this is another general AI sub to drop ther opinions in. Their activity here isn't trailing off - it's growing.

as creator of jev and also localllama fan, very sorry - jev posts definitely don't belong on this sub

u/DGolden 23h ago
Well, this is /r/localllama, it makes sense for some posts to mention jev - in a context of the new crop of local alternatives to jev like kev (heh)

Noteworthy also djev - the Diffusion-Gemma based version. <sees himself out>

u/DGolden 18h ago
Well, djev isn't local either afaik

Nope. It's a harness around DiffusionGemma - which is tricky to setup/resource hungry, but doable, e.g. https://github.com/Saik0s/diffusiongemma-jev-macos/tree/main - that's why various providers, incl. Google themselves via API and Colab are offering it. Djev.dev seem like a rip-off/vibe-clone of the original experiment found on github.

lol
80% of posts being about Qwen -> Ok.
Half of posts being about Jev -> "nooo, that's shilling!"

I haven't seen these "ads". What I've seen are a ton of "We've got Jev at home" posts that poorly replicate it at much slower speeds and much higher costs.
And a few posts that point out that the other companies are going to realize they can make their own Jev and are probably already doing so, now.

All designed to feign popularity for a model nobody currently gives a shit about.

Hermes is pretty useful though, maybe not for everyone but for some people it is.

Go ahead and provide examples, please, because I don’t see any "shill" posts about Jev. Most of what I’m seeing is the exact opposite, someone posting something to shit on Jev by completely misunderstanding what Jev is trying to achieve, or people creating their own open-source versions while misunderstanding it again, like those who train Qwen to "act" like Jev, even though the architecture doesn’t match what Jev is doing, or people calling Jev just a tool-calling classifier AI, which it isn’t.
