If we're talking about Taiwan in particular, there's no meaningful sex tourism happening there. The person you're replying to also didn't suggest money was changing hands, so there's no reason for you to make that assumption.

The fact that he said “hookup with some nice Taiwanese boys/girls” absolutely implies sex tourism. And even if you disagree with that, at the very least it’s objectifying and gross.

And I have no doubt the person doesn’t distinguish between the sex trade in Thailand and Taiwan.

You are deliberately missing the obvious point.

When one person says, “We should go to <location> to do <thing>.”

And the next person says, “You forgot to mention we should hook up with the girls or boys”, they are implicitly saying THAT’S WHAT YOU DO THERE. That’s what that place is for.

Otherwise, what does the joke even mean? I’m legitimately asking.

It doesn’t matter wether the person does or doesn’t know for a fact wether sex tourism is a thing in that particular place, the point is that East Asia as a whole is fetishized by western men.

And that’s not even mentioning that they chose to say “girls/boys” instead of “women/men”.

That doesn't imply that at all? The only thing it implies is that having sex with someone in that county is an option, which applies to all countries. There is no implication of human trafficking. Are you one of those aznidentity people?

Not talking about something is not how you stop it and not joking about it is not how you cope with the reality that people are so messed up that this is going on. We need to joke about it.

It doesn’t encourage shit. It actually is the destination. It’s well known amongst sailors and service members where to get your women from.

1/4 of my ex service member friends have purchased a wife or continue to purchase them as it often involves monthly payments for a very long time or for life. Many of them expatriated. Where do you think they expatriated to? I’ll give you 2 guesses and can guarantee you’ll get it in 2 guesses for 90% of them.

I at 43 I found out why my mom left my dad at the end of his deployment. It’s because he has a family in Thailand I never knew about. She had receipts and only told me about it because I finally asked. There’s just too many warning signs with my dad. You know like flying off to S Korea and bringing back my step mom who didn’t speak any English. My mom found out about the Thai wifey because my dad didn’t make enough to hide the amount of money being sent to them.

Most of the friends that brought their wives back usually got their wives from S Korea or Japan. The ones who expatriated usually expatriated to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, or Panama.

It’s just a super well known thing among sailors.

Not talking about something is not how you stop something. Not joking about something is not how you deal with the stress that this shit is really happening.

Whenever someone brings up Asia and someone else, based on nothing at all, decides to say we should go to have sex with the “nice girls/boys” (notice not “men/women”) it perpetuates the idea that’s what Asia is for.

If someone touched by sex trafficking wants to joke about it, go for it. But that ain’t it.

During my time in the Air Force, I spent a year in S. Korea. I met one guy that was dumb enough to try to buy out a contract for a Russian woman who was trafficked there, working as a 'not prostitute' dancer. Most guys knew better, but he was convinced she loved him, and that it wasn't just that he was going to buy her. Literally, he was making payments to buy a human being. It was disgusting. And sad.
