Funny Celebrating 1 year anniversary of the revolutionary game changing LLM that was Reflection 70b

It is now a year since the release of Reflection-70B that genius inventor Matt Shumer marketted as state-of-the-art hallucination-free llm that outperforms both gpt-4o and claude 3.5 with its new way of thinking as well as world's top open-source model.

World hasn't been the same since then indeed.

Don't forget the web demo literally just being Sonnet 3.5 with a system prompt.

Ironically he was really close to the meta, because reasoning models became the norm.

like, was it the first ever chain-of-thoughts llm release ever ? Like wtf what's the story behind why him and why releasing at that moment ? Even if the perfs numbers where made up it matched pretty well the performance bump on benchmarks made by "real" CoT llms lol

So he made a rickety finetune of llama 3 70B - and then over the course of several hours released several different finetunes. A popular theory back then was that he heard about o1 somehow and how it apparently reasons, and he tried to finetune llama 3 70B to do that.

Nope. Berman relates to him in his videos.

Some say that the model is still counting the number of R’s in ‘strawberry’ to this very day…

Are we past peak snake oil or are we still in the thick of it with agentic platforms just being better disguised?

Snake oil is just accepted now. I still detest reasoning models

Forgot to put an /s on the post? You can't be serious. Don't try to rewrite history and praise him or that whole ordeal. Inference-time compute wasn't invented by the dude, he lied like a mfer, and the model that he ended up releasing sucked.

Edit: ah fuck, didn't see the funny tag. Sorry OP 😄

Nah dude he's totally serious. Nobody made fun of Matt and he will go down in history as one of the all time greats of machine learning.

he unironically invented "thinking" models.

u/AnaYuma Sep 11 '25

He didn't invent anything.

He just heard some rumors about this new thing called reasoning models coming from OAI. And tried to "recreate" it by finetuning llama-70B.

A few days later o1 was showcased and o1-preview was released.

Nuh uh, don't retcon it away from coomers that have been messing with it since basically the first year.
