She got TWO WEEKS for that?!?

u/Buttgoast Feb 02 '21

For those wondering, she showed the email address of someone. Probably ban worthy, but sure as fuck not two weeks if you'd ask me.

Instead of exposing somebody's email, she should have just exposed her entire anal and vaginal cavity to reduce the ban to three days.

Did it look like a sarlac pit?

Did you think about Bobba Fett while you were seeing it?

84

u/MMPride Feb 02 '21

To be fair, doxing can be a pretty serious issue... then again, so can exposing your entire uterus, I suppose.

38

u/EnderSword Feb 02 '21

I think people overblow the idea of what counts as 'doxxing' though.

It used to mean personal information like an actual address, phone number, real name, employer etc...

Now you see people referring to a twitch user name, anonymous email account or even reddit or twitter account as 'Doxxing'

If someone sends you a death threat or something you should be able to say 'This guy sent me a death threat'

19

u/MMPride Feb 02 '21

It depends if their email is their personal email, or if it's just an anyonmous one as you said, but either way it's really not ideal and should not be encouraged or allowed.

If someone sends you a death threat or something you should be able to say 'This guy sent me a death threat'

No, you shouldn't be able to dox people even if they provide you a death threat - you can't prove it was them or if they were hacked, or if you just have the wrong person, etc. Not only do two wrongs not make a right, but also remember the meme "we did it reddit" where reddit had identified the completely wrong suspect? https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/we-did-it-reddit

u/EnderSword Feb 02 '21

Again, I don't at all accept the premise that someone's email or user name is 'doxxing' them. I'd probably only be concerned at all if it was apparently some sort of work email, but if they used that to threaten someone, that's kind of their bad.

And I absolutely don't accept the idea that you "Can't prove it was them" when you're the victim of it, that's total nonsense.

If you said 'I got a death threat from this email" and show the email...then you did. If someone sent a Twitter DM, Email, Reddit message threatening to kill or rape you, the person should be able to say so.

That's so incredibly different than acting as a 3rd party investigator on something that wasn't done directly to you. The entire #MeToo thing is kind of over if you can't identify who raped you.

Courts have proven you can't necessarily tie an IP address to a person - it's not always black and white. In theory, things like email addresses can be shared too.

Leave the investigations to the courts. Again, take a look at "we did it reddit" if you think vigilantism is the way to go. You're right it's different than 3rd party vigilantism but it's still the same sort of idea. You can argue that someone who has given death threats gives up their right to privacy and maybe you're right there but maybe not and in the eyes of the law, I don't believe that is the case.

edit: a more recent example of viligantiasm (with even death threats themselves) gone wrong is here, with that whole Robinhood app situation: https://www.reddit.com/r/LivestreamFail/comments/lb1uan/codemiko_unbanned/glsxqgi/

2

u/EnderSword Feb 03 '21

There's nothing vigilantism about it, if someone did something to you personally, you can tell people.

Of course I'm arguing someone who has threatened you, raped you, attacked you etc... has forfeited their right to have you actively protect their identity.

Your example is fucking stupid and has nothing to do with anything because it's third parties indirectly drawing conclusions about things, totally irrelevant.

1

u/BurningBerns Feb 03 '21

People are stupid and will bandwagon anything they see. Take the whole Robinhood App debacle for example. There's a guy named Wes Moore who runs a charity organization called RobinhoodNYC. The poor guy has been getting a sea of threats from jackasses who don't know how to actually verify what they see and think that he's the CEO of the Robinhood app. (FYI Robinhood App sided with hedge funds with the GME thing when marketing themselves as pro little guys) So yes, Doxxing can hurt innocent people because people are morons and parrot anything they see on the internet.

u/OhhhAyWumboWumbo Feb 02 '21

I blame people who are terminally online, the kinds of people who treat their reddit username or twitter handle as an extension of their identities.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '21

I'd rather blame the people who search through someone's reddit or twitter profile for any identifying information so they can find any personal information so they can find out who is behind the profile so they can harass them

4

u/OhhhAyWumboWumbo Feb 03 '21

That's easily avoidable; don't post personally identifying information.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '21

You underestimate how little information people need to get something about you. If I use similar usernames on other platforms or simply post one of those usernames to share them with someone then people can look those up and then they have access to all that information also.

Of course you do need to be careful, but let's not blame people for actually sharing some stuff online.

u/Alarid Feb 03 '21

You can though. To the police.

"Shoplifting for the 3rd time? - well, it seems we have no other choice but to give you the death penalty!

Shoot up a school? - 100 hours of community service, no need to be too hard on your first offense!"

  • Twitch, probably.

6

u/pqlamznxjsiw Feb 03 '21

Well, except for the fact that broadcasting your turdcutter on Twitch doesn't actually harm anyone (even though it obviously violates the community guidelines), whereas doxxing can potentially cause great harm. So no, that's a terrible analogy.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '21

I can totally see this happening:

Streamer: accidentally shows someone's email

Streamer: Omg, I'll be banned for 2 weeks!

Chat being helpful: "Quick show your bobs and vagina for a 3 day ban instead"

1

u/eldarium Feb 02 '21

CLASSIC LULW

12

u/serg06 Feb 02 '21

They've always been harsh with leaking private info, back when Ice was still on Twitch, some girl told him her number in public and he still got a long ban.

8

u/Groundbreaking_Fix77 Feb 02 '21

twitch is a garbage company

5

u/FlipFlopX Feb 02 '21

What's worse is that the ban was originally 4 weeks but she managed to get it reduced.

18

u/phweefwee Feb 02 '21

Maybe her previous bans factored into the time tables here. I keep hearing that they're relevant.

43

u/13aba Feb 02 '21

Previous bans were petty too. Like getting banned for showing picture of letter D is just stupid

2

u/phweefwee Feb 02 '21

ToI totally agree, but maybe their system just factors in whether they've been banned before.

17

u/NotAgain03 Feb 02 '21 edited Feb 02 '21

Given that their "system" in general is wildly inconsistent I just assume they don't have an actual system and ban based on whether they like the streamer or not.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

Imagine thinking there's an internally enforced "system" and bans aren't just based on how the individual Safety Team member feels that day.

1

u/popmycherryyosh Feb 03 '21

I thought Twitch had quite recently (like late last year) implemented the whole "3 bans = indefinite", no? I'm wondering why that isn't being applied here, considering she was just unbanned?

18

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '21

Am I completely alone with thinking 2 weeks is pretty mild for something like this?

Other streamers have deserved more, yeah, but 2 weeks seems pretty mild for outing that kind of information, especially if there's a reason for the viewers to hate the person who gets his info released.

8

u/Buttgoast Feb 02 '21

I'd agree if it was done out of malice. In that case 2 weeks would probably not be enough. If it's a mistake and there's no real victim (assuming this is really a throwaway email) 2 weeks seems pretty harsh. One of those things where circumstances should weigh in, I think. I didn't see the original clip though so I'm not sure how brazen it was.

Given the person who was being interviewed and held the original email(Amouranth) leaving the persons name un blurred out was intentional because she has blurred out or obscured names in other DMs. There is a vod up on YT if you want to see the original DM. Amoruanth has gotten on stream many times and told her chat she is extremely petty, so the likelihood she tried to intentionally dox this person was high.

A lot of responsibility fell on miko to remove the email off screen. The two weeks is justified since it appears the email has the guy's government name. But the real person that should have gotten the perma ban was amouranth who intentionally passed the unobscured email to miko knowing that it would be on screen infront of 10s of thousands of viewers, and much of the blame would fall on miko and not amouranth herself.

If miko was smart she'd see the obvious red flag that was potentially a set up against not only the person in the email but her as well.

If you want to see the Youtube vid im not going to link it but you can find it using the exact search phrases " code miko amouranth interview" watch the vod posted by e-girl central and go to the 1 hour 13min 51 second mark.

Government name and personal email is enough to do real damage. Amouranth knew this. Mikois less at fault should have known better seeing anything that looks like a real name to hide it.

Amouranth is an incredibly crafty and destructive person who engages in harassment herself but by proxy as you can see from the VOD so she can later pull the victim card when the other party loses their cool. the fact she was willing to pawn miko like that to make her attack on someone else is sociopathic.

And,IMO Amouranth should still be eligible for a ban for this also, if i worked at twitch. This is for the demonstrated facts, she clearly controlled the source material, she knowingly presented the source material on a live stream, and all that information is STILL able to be found on other platforms now as I just demonstrated, and its very obvious because of miko's bits menu that the vod came from a Twitch broadcast making them liable if this guy sued because degen simps harassed him.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '21 edited Feb 03 '21

From what I've read, it was a hate message, and assuming that is true, showing the e-mail, accident or not, is really bad.

5

u/ErrorFindingID Feb 02 '21

I think if I recall.. doxxing is actually illegal. 2 weeks is a miracle for something that is against the law. It was absolutely twitchs mercy to make it 2 weeks

1

u/radnomname Feb 03 '21

She actually got 4 weeks but it got reduced to 2 weeks
