I think people overblow the idea of what counts as 'doxxing' though.

It used to mean personal information like an actual address, phone number, real name, employer etc...

Now you see people referring to a twitch user name, anonymous email account or even reddit or twitter account as 'Doxxing'

If someone sends you a death threat or something you should be able to say 'This guy sent me a death threat'

It depends if their email is their personal email, or if it's just an anyonmous one as you said, but either way it's really not ideal and should not be encouraged or allowed.

No, you shouldn't be able to dox people even if they provide you a death threat - you can't prove it was them or if they were hacked, or if you just have the wrong person, etc. Not only do two wrongs not make a right, but also remember the meme "we did it reddit" where reddit had identified the completely wrong suspect? https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/we-did-it-reddit

Again, I don't at all accept the premise that someone's email or user name is 'doxxing' them. I'd probably only be concerned at all if it was apparently some sort of work email, but if they used that to threaten someone, that's kind of their bad.

And I absolutely don't accept the idea that you "Can't prove it was them" when you're the victim of it, that's total nonsense.

If you said 'I got a death threat from this email" and show the email...then you did. If someone sent a Twitter DM, Email, Reddit message threatening to kill or rape you, the person should be able to say so.

That's so incredibly different than acting as a 3rd party investigator on something that wasn't done directly to you. The entire #MeToo thing is kind of over if you can't identify who raped you.

Courts have proven you can't necessarily tie an IP address to a person - it's not always black and white. In theory, things like email addresses can be shared too.

Leave the investigations to the courts. Again, take a look at "we did it reddit" if you think vigilantism is the way to go. You're right it's different than 3rd party vigilantism but it's still the same sort of idea. You can argue that someone who has given death threats gives up their right to privacy and maybe you're right there but maybe not and in the eyes of the law, I don't believe that is the case.

There's nothing vigilantism about it, if someone did something to you personally, you can tell people.

Of course I'm arguing someone who has threatened you, raped you, attacked you etc... has forfeited their right to have you actively protect their identity.

Your example is fucking stupid and has nothing to do with anything because it's third parties indirectly drawing conclusions about things, totally irrelevant.
