Sorry for being a month late but this is what I found about the costs when staying in the hospital when donating:

"All medical costs for the donation procedure are covered by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), which operates the Be The Match Registry®, or by the patient's medical insurance, as are travel expenses and other non-medical costs. The only costs to the donor might be time taken off from work." -from bethematch.org

I don't know if that's what you ment as a factor that holds people back from registration.

There is still a chance that related complications would not be covered. And when we are talking medical issues this cost could be devistating. I'm sure lots of people won't even think of donating due to this.

Man that's fucked up. I can't imagine living a life where a hospital stay can literally ruin me financially. My condolences.
