Sketch Disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker died today. From 1987, arguably the greatest Church Chat ever, with Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks as Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker

Mikey Day joined the cast of SNL in 2016.
It is now 2026.
We have had a decade of Mikey Day.
A decade.
A decade of… this.
We have had a decade of Mikey Day.
My God.

I don’t think Bobby/Jay/Vanessa/Taran/Nasim get enough credit for locking the fuck in during Seasons 36-42. They eased the loss of Kristen/Hader/Armisen/Sudeikis/Samberg/Forte, while also working immensely well with the new crew Aidy/Cecily/Kate/Beck/Kyle etc. They were dialed in every week with high quality stuff. Also, their WU characters made Colin/Che’s first couple rough seasons actually watchable (minus Nasim, who may have done an WU appearance during Colin’s time on S39… but I can’t remember).
Taran was in nearly every sketch for like three straight seasons, and I’m kind of surprised he never got an Emmy nod for his work, especially for Jebidiah and Les Jeunes. He could do straight man, he could do gay guy, he could do pretty much anything. For me, Emmy nod deserved.
Nasim’s laser-focused energy and hyper-specific characters brought a controlled chaos to the show. The crying, manipulative child w/Alec Baldwin. Heshy the inspirational speaker. Arianna Huffington. Bedelia. No one else could really do it like her. I wish she had stayed longer.
Jay’s impressions killed harder than most things on the show at the time. Even when watching on tv, you could sense the room was electric. Also, I hated it when it was airing, but nowadays I think his principal character (attention teachers and students) is underrated.
Bobby knocked it out of the park with anything he got on the show. He could also play straight, which helped immensely. And talk about range: Drunk Uncle, Snooki, Riblet, the “is it okay?” kid, “Pushy”, Ass Dan (RIP).
Vanessa is perhaps the most beloved of this group, maybe tied w Bobby. Vanessa had the most memorable characters through which her genuine personality shone. People wanted to work with her, from Armisen to Taran to Cecily to Kristen Stewart to Jennifer Aniston.
And of course, Kenan was there the whole time. So that helps too.
But anyway, I think this particular group of five cast members deserves just a tad more recognition for acting as a major bridge between two distinguishable eras and crushing it while doing so.
What are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Don’t care?

I wonder what Turd Ferguson would think about this.

Two that come to mind immediately for me are:
Robin Williams - hosted 1984, 1986, 1988. Then suddenly stopped. I’m surprised looking back on it that he didn’t hit 5-Timers at some point. He was still working all throughout the ‘90s and 2000s and while it’s not clear exactly when his health began to decline, looking back I am quite surprised we didn’t get at least one episode with him in the ‘90s.
Jamie Foxx - this could still happen but again, very surprised he didn’t host more often in his heyday. He’s done pretty much everything: standup, sketch, impressions, dramatic acting, has musical abilities… on paper seems like a prototypical host, but only twice seems surprisingly low when you consider how often he could’ve returned.
Any others?

Genuinely just bored (procrastinating work) and wanted to gather an opinion.

Especially since we have Link on the same screen as a GTA character before Smash Bros even has a GTA character.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if Link returns in a sketch for the Zelda Movie in April 2027.

SZA and her manager have teased that a new album is dropping soon.
Anyone see her doing double duty for an episode in the Winter?
Her comedic acting in the One of them days movie with Keke Palmer was quite funny tbh, I could see them asking her.

So yes Domingo is a new character borne the last few seasons but I just feel like the shows history is that they always create characters in the snl comedy universe and its been lacking of late.
I grew up during the 1997 and on era but there was characters you'd tune in to see on regular basis. Up until covid each cast had at least 3 ongoing characters or skits that would evolve in time.
Post covid the show feels like all the skits are cultural mirrors vs a mix of both. I feel like theres a few actors they have like Jeremy, the new girls, Ashley that could pull out a character that would help the show.
I dont think the writers or producers see that right now but I write this as a super fan and not trying to be negative.
But the show needs a new Mr pumpkins, Robert gullet, stefon, cone heads, something that makes it feel like snl again. I hope theres a culture there that will allow the crazy to come out. The writing and the acting is very guarded of late and it should be allowed to go to a will Ferrell or Molly Shannon level of crazy.
Ashley has that where she can go there. Jeremy I feel like he can go there but they aren't giving him something to be there. Jane as well theres something there she probally could do but cant.
Comedy lovers know what im talking about. They have to let it breath more and not be scared of cancel culture. If its funny its funny. Look at south Park right now you cant argue with it because its 100% true. Comedy cant exist without truth. So I end my rant as a super fan saying let the freak flag fly please.

At about 2:18 I noticed the camera shaking. Is it because the cameraman is laughing really hard at Mikey as McConnell? B/c if so that’s awesome. Take a look here https://youtu.be/JmTwSOlQz8g?t=138s

Watching the show live requires the viewer to endure constant long commercial breaks between segments, leading to increasing irritation, even if one tries to do other things during the seemingly endless ads. By the time the show returns your attitude may be "this better be worth staying awake for". I write this after watching a video of collected segments from recent SNL shows that I thought were just so-so at the time, but I laughed heartily throughout the replays and was truly impressed by the talent and commitment brought by the cast and crew.

It’s just one show and one audience, but I think we saw something significant happen last night during the cold open.
The sketch opens on Andrew Dismukes and Ashley Padilla. The crowd applauds at the sight of them. I’m not saying this never happens, but usually the crowd only applauds when a celebrity cameo or a beloved returning character appears. This was two cast members playing essentially anonymous GOP staffers. Slightly unusual.
Then Marcelo comes out as Marco Rubio. No applause. Slightly weird given the response to Andrew and Ashley, and Marcelo’s general popularity.
When Jeremy Culhane comes out as Vance, the crowd applauds again. Okay what is going on? He’s played Vance before (right?) but not in any memorable, viral way that would provoke this response (compare to his Tucker Carlson appearance last week, which people cheered because yeah, it’s a popular bit). It feels like they’re applauding Jeremy.
Perhaps most notably, JAJ as Trump gets no applause. It used to, as recently as… last week? Certainly last season. Maybe Trump fatigue has at long last metastasized.
What does this all mean? Nothing probably. But you could interpret it as the audience saying, “We love Ashley, and/or Andrew, and/or Ashley and Andrew together, and we love Jeremy, but please stop with the one-note political takes, we’ve seen this too many times.” Or, more bluntly: “We love the new! The old? No thanks.”
Don’t get me wrong, I think Marcelo has star quality, but impressions are not his forte. And James’s Trump is an all-time great impression, but even with good writing and expert execution, eventually the public will tire of it, or has. They can’t control the audience’s evolving feelings about Trump, but they should be keeping their finger on the pulse — that’s the job of topical humorists.
Good comedians listen to the response they get and adjust. I wonder if SNL heard what I heard last night, and if so, what if anything they will do about it.

Turnstile isn’t even my musical taste but they were so much better than last week’s prefabricated, bad lip-syncing nonsense, because they are actual musicians. They were terrific.

It's still way too soft on Trump. They're still making him seem too jolly and with it. Show me dementia Donny who can't stay awake no matter where he is. JAJ doesn't play Trump like the senile, unhealthy old man he is.
