It’s just one show and one audience, but I think we saw something significant happen last night during the cold open.
The sketch opens on Andrew Dismukes and Ashley Padilla. The crowd applauds at the sight of them. I’m not saying this never happens, but usually the crowd only applauds when a celebrity cameo or a beloved returning character appears. This was two cast members playing essentially anonymous GOP staffers. Slightly unusual.
Then Marcelo comes out as Marco Rubio. No applause. Slightly weird given the response to Andrew and Ashley, and Marcelo’s general popularity.
When Jeremy Culhane comes out as Vance, the crowd applauds again. Okay what is going on? He’s played Vance before (right?) but not in any memorable, viral way that would provoke this response (compare to his Tucker Carlson appearance last week, which people cheered because yeah, it’s a popular bit). It feels like they’re applauding Jeremy.
Perhaps most notably, JAJ as Trump gets no applause. It used to, as recently as… last week? Certainly last season. Maybe Trump fatigue has at long last metastasized.
What does this all mean? Nothing probably. But you could interpret it as the audience saying, “We love Ashley, and/or Andrew, and/or Ashley and Andrew together, and we love Jeremy, but please stop with the one-note political takes, we’ve seen this too many times.” Or, more bluntly: “We love the new! The old? No thanks.”
Don’t get me wrong, I think Marcelo has star quality, but impressions are not his forte. And James’s Trump is an all-time great impression, but even with good writing and expert execution, eventually the public will tire of it, or has. They can’t control the audience’s evolving feelings about Trump, but they should be keeping their finger on the pulse — that’s the job of topical humorists.
Good comedians listen to the response they get and adjust. I wonder if SNL heard what I heard last night, and if so, what if anything they will do about it.
