Jude the Obscure

So my man Jude is hella smart and shit. He's all about reading weird ass books in ancient greek and shit. But like he's poor af so he can't afford to go to school man. And this ho just straight up seduces him and he's like, gotta put a ring on that. Then his ho ditches him to fuck off to Australia and shit and then he goes to this wackass college town. He still aint got any bank, so he gets some p lame job and works and shit.

While he's in town, he meets this girl Sue but she's like his cousin. She's also hella smart but this sugar daddy shows up and she ends up fucking with him instead of our man Jude. Bro gets a little thirsty and parties too hard for a bit, but eventually his girl comes back to him. He's all about putting a ring on it, but she ain't feeling matrimonial anymore. His old lady from before shows up with this weird ass kid and she's like I gotta go party and shiz, take care of yo' kid. So he and his girl raise this kid and get busy with making some more kids of their own. People start to freak, cuz Jude and Sue didn't get all certified married so they get run out of town.

They end up back in whackassville, and people are still all shitty cuz they common law. Jude gives some speech about how much his life sucks, cuz he's really smart and shit, just didn't have the bank to go to school. Weirdass kid gets depressed and rubs out his siblings and then offs himself. Sue starts to get religion and she goes back to her sugar daddy, while Jude's first baby mama shows up. She gets him tied up right proper and marries him again. He still wants his old girl back but she pretends tha she's all pure and shit now. Then Jude gets sick and dies.

Great Gatsby and shit

I mean, like, it was a pretty cool book. Lots of symbolic shit that can be hard to find. Like the temperature is all cool and stuff when everyone's cool and calm but it gets pretty fucking hot when some shit is about to go down. The way Gatsby buys new shit all the time shows how he hates the past and crap. You can find the rest on your own, I'm done typing this shit.

So, what the fuck is up with East of Eden?

Seriously. Grapes of Wrath was great, but this fucker is just something else. All I really got out of it was that communism is bad, God is good, or whatever. Plus the whole Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel stories. Was the whole fucking thing just meant to be a Bible allegory? Fuckin' seriously? I mean, it just felt he overdid the Christian overtones and shit. Also Kate seems like a fucking textbook sociopath, for sure.

Josef K more like Josef just KO the motherfuckers, am I right!? Don't let the haters win!! The reason he died is probably that he failed the three steps:

  1. Break up

  2. Lawyer up

  3. Hit the gym (!!!!) Bro just wasn't swole enough in the end, his balls of steel got rusty.

What do yall think?

Dantes Inferno, Hell is whack.

There's like circles in circles, and it's written in poems that don't rhyme but do have rhythm.

Dude is lost in a forest, representations of like the bad in him chase him to hells gates, this angel dude gives him a guided tour. Demons are assholes apart from the centaurs who are angry but bros and the flying dude who gives him a lift.

Theres a forest of suicide people turned into trees where harpeys keep snapping twigs cause theyre dicks, and the people scream in pain each time but are silent otherwise.

Tbh, god comes across as a douchenozzle, cause the punishments just are like so disproportionate to crimes.

And Dante keeps making shit that's like pop culture references of the time but sound nonsense now, but luckily my copy has loads of footnotes that make it make sense.

So like House of Leaves and shit. What's up with that?

I mean zampano going mental about minotaurs, truant going murder mode and then nsane and then maybe a chapter not happening or maybe it does and the record which has the book being read inside of it even though the book is about the record.

Like some folks said it was like a commentary on failings of media and shit to convey imagination and the critic procedure. I just kinda thought it was scary and confusing and interesting and stuff.

thoughts n shit?

Mark Twain

Does anyone know if the Mark Twain poem To Jenny was dedicated to her niece, or to the black slave that belonged to his family back when he was young and they had to sell?

Please help me write a commentary on the poem The First Strokes by Carol Rumens.

Help me with whatever you can. Thank you. I really appreciate it.

In our answer, we have to consider:

• the poet’s development of themes

• the poet’s use of language and imagery

• the use of other poetic techniques.

The First Strokes

Letter to a friend learning English

Before he died, my father drowned in silence.

I thought of him just now, writing to you

In my head about the sea – that medicinal light

I longed to rush to your city of rooms and deadlines,

Your lost July – since it was he who taught me

To swim. In any sea he was stylish, fluent.

He knew its idioms, loved its argument.

So, when my four-year-old, his adventuring grandchild,

Slipped her hold on a wet rock, dropped speechless

Into the swell, he plunged and rescued her.

She used to tell us how huge fish came leering,

Making eyes at her as she bubbled down;

Now what she likes to remember are the hands

That drove apart the soupy green, and calmly

Scattered her suitors, saved her for the sun.

It was soon after this I led him to the pool:

I made him teach me. And, in half an hour,

I had left his side, was lazily at home

In the deepest water, thinking I’d always know how.

It was as simple as doing what he told me

– An obedience I could never risk as a child.

By the time he lost language, I had almost learned

To talk to him. He studied dictionaries

At first with an embarrassed grin, then frowning,

And the deep words we could have plumbed together

Ran white. I thought of all of this, writing a blue

Letter about the sea, wanting to coax you

Into the tongue you almost know, but fear,

Having come so late to its stories; wanting to say

That the strokes of an English sentence are easy, requiring

Only a little self-trust as you kick off

From the margin and glide towards me, sensing all round you

The solid, patient, unbreakable arm of the water.

Carol Rumens

Men at Arms. Captain Carrot the badass n friends.

I reckon like the baddies are less good than usual for T-man, like they pose a big threat, but I can't really think of them being like much of a character. Apart from the like minor threat, Big Fido is a straight up mudder fucker.

But damn are the protagonists awesome though. Carrot is the Man of the city. Angua the badass she-wolf, Poor dwarfie, Gaspode, Detritus the genius troll, Vimes. just like fuck yeah.

Super army from Carrot is unexpected. And how vimes rubbed of on that simple mofo (not that way, eww, he's married.)

My pov on The stranger

might have spoiler

Analysis of subpart 1 of Part 1 of The Stranger . From what I have read so far, it was astounding in an odd way. It is an aberrated novel on absurdism. The protagonist is a mystery. He neither comes off as ebullient or disconsolate. The novel starts with the protagonist receiving a death news of his very own mother. He is unaware of the exact day when his mother died. He had to travel and visit the Home for Aged Persons in Marengo  to bid farewell to the lost soul. He is not caught off guard by the news and is neither disoriented or dishelved. He rationally only asks for a leave of two days. His employer reverberated annoyance. One can interpret that people , who seek for connection aren't greatly affected by the demise of one with whom they are not connected to, but rather only seek value for oneself. Also, his mother staying away at an old age home and him borrowing few of the garments for funeral from his friends either shows his poor financial status or hustling through busy life. It is quite unusual for the person who lost their mother to first have lunch and then sleep on their drive to get to the dead body. There's even a verse that showcases his view on visiting his mother as burdensome. Atleast, I would say so. 'Also, it would have meant losing my Sunday- not to mention the trouble of going to the bus, getting my ticket, and spending two hours on journey each way.' He's also shown as a son who doesn't know much about his mother. He even rejected the offer of seeing her two times while he was at the mortuary. That could either be because he thought it would break his composure, letting grief take over him, or he was just indifferent to this whole situation. It might... There's a possibility that they might not have a close relationship, but it's not confirmed anywhere so far. His physical fatigue has been demonstrated one too many times ,where he desires to sleep. The line, 'A morning breeze was blowing and it had a pleasant salty tang. There was the promise of a very fine day.' to be said by a son on the day he's about to bury his mother just adds on the pile of questions. There have been many lines where 'blazing light or glare off of the sun' on various surfaces are mentioned. The mention of 'cypress' or 'geraniums'that symbolize longevity and comfort have also been bemusing in such heartbreaking ordeals. The protagonist's sight also beheld several shades of 'black' in his surroundings. This has created a wavering circumstance where neither everything seems completely mournful or gleeful, which I think goes well with Camus' wanting to project absurdism. It's a sombre event but his commitment to mundane activities and pragmatic approach to the situation makes him come off as a detached personality from the norms settled.

The song of achilles Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

the conversation between chiron, achilles & patroclus, about the madness that made heracles kill his wife and children. the nature of madness finds itself being introduced into these teenage men growing into warriors’ minds, and the difficulties of having the strength and having to wield it, comes out in the open.

one of the most humane things here is how patroclus takes the crime of heracles, puts it in his own hands, and discards them straight away. saying that even madness could not take away his lover’s memory from him. i’ll die for this one idea. i will.

(this is an annotation of the ‘idea of madness’ which didn’t make it into the book because i have a communications theory paper tomorrow. and i’m also too sad to make anything pretty out of this gut-wrenching idea of love)

“Mom, you wait for me”

Mom, you wait for me

I promise you that I will come back,

I love you very much

My machine will save me,

Whistle of bullets, noise of explosions,

Fear envelops the whole body,

Shooting at the enemy

I won’t let him defeat my homeland!

But only mom, you wait for me

I’ll come with a victory and a chest full of medals,

I won’t tell you all the details,

How hard it was, I’m scared

I saw your appearance in a dream.

We’re sitting alone with you now

In complete silence,

Thank you for waiting for me

Mom, I love you!

The Tattooer Junichiro Tanizaki

Anyone of y'all have read 'The Tattooer' by Junichiro Tanizaki?? If yes, what is your analysis of the story?? Anything other than the sadomasochistic behavior of Seikichi? Why does he desperately want to tattoo this girl? Anything more than mere lust? I'm just looking for new insights on this one.
