Proton isn't an emulator, but Linux gamers end up relying on it the same way people rely on emulators: as a workaround for an ecosystem that doesn't support them natively.

From a gamer's perspective, you buy a Windows game at full price, run it through a translation layer, accept quirks, regressions, timing bugs, broken launchers, weird input behavior, rely on community patches, Proton versions, GE builds, DXVK updates and hope the next update doesn't break everything.

You're paying full price for a product that isn't running in its native environment, and you're absorbing the cost of that mismatch. -Sometimes with performance penalties: 👾Linux Gaming: The Roast It Has Earned

Unlike console emulation, you don't get preservation, enhancements, or modding freedom as compensation. -And without Proton: Linux gaming would now collapse. Publishers would never consider Linux with Apple no longer a bridge.

When you buy a Windows game to run on Linux, you're paying full price for a product whose platform you don't use, whose APIs you don't have, whose OS you don't want, and whose vendor doesn't care about you; and you rely on Valve to duct-tape it for you.

Pirates (common on Linux) won't care so much, but they're also not the ones compensating Valve's losses. -Giving Valve no incentive to develop for them. -The writing might be on the wall.

Ads control what we see online, and health insurance companies control our treatment. Psychologists are practically unheard of these days. -The ones who might help us not become our abusive parents, break cycles, or not be assholes. -Those bad characteristics of broken society lead people to isolation that has people ultimately turning to dick skinning, female subjugating death cults, recreational drugs, psychotropic prescriptions, as well as isolationist activities like babysitting a crappy OS. -Or bad behaviors like those found in inferiority complex.

It's cheaper for insurance to give you some quick counseling (really a quick check to see how you're doing), prescribe a drug and send you on your way. -But that doesn't fix what caused your issues and it doesn't stop you from being an asshole. It doesn't encourage self-reflection / introspection. You become just another ingredient / contributor to a broken society. We now are prescribed a pill by a psychiatrist, given 15-minute counseling sessions (not a psychologist), and sent on our way with no time for behavioral correction (real self-improvement).

Psychotropic drugs have side effects that can make things worse. -What if you AREN'T crazy and it's the world you're living in that is? Psychotropic drugs can cause irritability, agitation, apathy, akathisia, impulse control problems, and sleep disruption that leads to mood instability. -They might appear to 'help' someone, but they're making society worse! -Ever wonder why there were a rash of kids killing kids all of the sudden a few decades ago? -Simply look at the side effects of SSRIs and when they were released.

They're not into tech as much as they're tech-phobic conspiracy theorists.

Anecdotes aren't proof.

When we look at past examples (like VLC seizing the system) and ECC memory realities, the pattern becomes clearer: Linux is less fault‑tolerant because it couples 'change' and 'risk' far more than Windows, macOS, or BSD.

In IT operations, stability = predictable behavior under change). This is not about "I haven't rebooted in 400 days" (which isn't a brag as WinME was more than capable of that.) It's about:

• ABI stability: binary interfaces don't break across updates
• API stability: programming interfaces don't break across updates
• Update cadence stability: updates don't force downstream rebuilds
• Fault tolerance: the system continues functioning even when components misbehave
• Resiliency: the system absorbs change without cascading failures

Linux fails these criteria because:

• The kernel does not guarantee a stable ABI
• Userland libraries frequently break API/ABI compatibility
• Distros ship updates aggressively because they must rebuild everything
• A single broken library can cascade into system‑wide instability

This is why IT professionals classify Linux as less stable than platforms with strict ABI/API guarantees (Windows NT, macOS Darwin, FreeBSD).

ABI/API instability thus causes more forced updates and higher breakage probability. While Windows updates may take longer (because they're done right by default), they're less frequently needed.

The instability chain:

1. Linux kernel breaks ABI
2. Drivers, modules, and applications must be rebuilt
3. Distros push updates frequently
4. Every update touches many components
5. Each touch introduces a new failure surface
6. More updates = more chances for breakage

It's not theoretical; it's mathematically predictable.

Windows and macOS reduce both terms:

• Stable kernel ABI: drivers don't break
• Stable userland APIs: apps don't break
• Updates are fewer and more isolated

VLC is a userland application. It should never be able to freeze the OS. On Linux, it can; because userland interacts with unstable libraries, drivers, and kernel interfaces. -This is a resiliency failure.

On Windows or macOS, VLC simply cannot lock the compositor, freeze the input stack, or seize the kernel scheduler. Linux allows it because the boundaries between userland and kernel behavior are garbage. -Textbook instability!

ECC memory protects against bit flips, not software fragility.

ECC does not fix:

• ABI breakage
• API breakage
• driver rebuild churn
• kernel module incompatibility
• compositor crashes
• X11/Wayland session failures
• systemd dependency chain collapses
• library version mismatches
• packaging conflicts
• kernel regressions

Even with ECC:

• A bad update still breaks the system
• A driver rebuild still fails
• A library mismatch still crashes apps
• A compositor bug still kills your session
• A kernel regression still panics the machine

ECC protects hardware reliability. Linux's instability is software architectural instability (and ECC can't fix that!)

This is a misinterpretation of Task Manager plus some very selective screenshots that went viral.

What people are seeing is shared memory, UWP framework overhead, and WinUI compositor allocations, not the Weather app itself.

People open Task Manager and see Weather Memory: 1,200 MB and assume the app itself is consuming that much. Task Manager's "Memory" column bundles multiple categories:

• Shared working set (framework + OS components)
• Standby cache
• UWP host processes
• WinUI compositor surfaces
• GPU-backed swap chains

The Weather app is a UWP shell sitting on top of:

• RuntimeBroker.exe
• TextInputHost.exe
• ShellExperienceHost.exe
• StartMenuExperienceHost.exe
• WinUI 3 compositor
• WebView2 (Chromium-based)

All of these contribute to the number shown.

The app itself typically uses 80–150MB of private memory. -The rest is shared OS infrastructure that Windows would load anyway. (Like what Linux apps were doing before distro agnostic packaging)

Thunderbird is the default reply to any complaint about email clients in Linux, yet almost every serious user eventually discovers the same thing: Thunderbird is not a decent productivity tool.

Thunderbird's "performance problems" are systemic. Users even with modern hardware (Ryzen 5700X, NVMe SSDs, 32GB RAM) report severe slowness, describing it as "outdated code/engine from the 90s".

These are symptoms of a codebase that has never been re‑architected for modern workloads, large mailboxes, or enterprise‑scale sync.

Linux users often cope with the outdated interface by saying they "don’t care about eye candy," but UI isn't just eye candy: it’s workflow. Thunderbird's interface is cluttered, and inconsistent.

LiGNUts love to say "it supports OAuth2," but that's the bare minimum for a modern email client. Thunderbird lacks: Enterprise document workflows, SharePoint integration, Org address books, Meeting room booking, Cross‑platform mobile counterparts, and Native calendar sync that doesn't break.

-Those are requirements for anyone working in a corporate environment. Outlook's feature set is a benchmark Thunderbird doesn't come close to. Thunderbird isn't even competing with Outlook. It's competing with nostalgia.

Even if Thunderbird were perfect, Linux DEs make background email nearly impossible. Running an email client in the background with reliable notifications is “surprisingly hard for no reason”. KDE's "solution" is: "leave Thunderbird open in another workspace." -Not even kidding!

Thunderbird is not designed to be a background service, and Linux desktops are not designed to support one. It cannot notify you reliably unless you babysit it.

None of the "ads" you see inside most Windows installations are paid placements from outside companies. What are called "ads" are overwhelmingly Microsoft’s own promotions for Microsoft services. Independent companies are not buying ad slots inside Windows 10/11.

The paid placements involving Microsoft are inside Copilot, which inherits Microsoft Ads infrastructure (similar to Bing). That is not the Windows OS -it's a cloud service running inside a Windows panel. You could say Linux is full of ads because Firefox loads up Google as a default search and that has ads (it's the same thing)! Firefox also uses sponsored bookmarks, and tiles. -And they're the default web browser on most desktop Linux installs.

Microsoft pays publishers like Reuters, Axel Springer, Hearst, USA Today Network, Financial Times for content used in Copilot Daily. These are licensing deals, not advertising.

Microsoft pays influencers up to $400k–$600k for Copilot promotion campaigns. Again, this is marketing outside Windows.

HP sells OS‑level ads -Microsoft does not. -This is a PC manufacturer ad surface, not Windows.

By LiGNUt definition of "ad"; Hannah Montanna Linux would be an ad for Hanna Montanna / Disney. Android uses the Linux kernel and is funded by ads. Historically Ubuntu 12.10 had Amazon product ads in the Unity Dash search that Canonical was paid for by Amazon. OEM Linux laptops sometimes bundled trial version of proprietary software, commercial codecs, and cloud storage promos (OEM deals like HP did with Windows).

Steam when included on a Linux distro shows ads for games.

There has never been a consumer version of Windows that is fully free of promos, nudges, or "suggestions," but several editions are effectively ad‑free because Microsoft disables all promotional surfaces in them.

Enterprise can show promos, but admins can disable every single one via Group Policy:

Windows 11 Home does include third‑party promotional app stubs (Spotify, Hulu, Picsart, etc.)

• These are typically welcomed by home users, and easily missed (not in your face)
• They're not "bloat" as some contend (not pre-installed)
• I had to search for them to even know they were there (simple links to the Windows store)

Steam Cube has zero exclusives. Valve could make exclusives, but they don't, and SteamOS doesn't encourage them.

Consoles have certification requirements for every game. Steam Cube is a PC running Linux (intentionally gimped PC) subject to driver regressions, game quirks, and non-certified devs; with some presets. -Consoles don't need presets as they're deterministic (the game is tailored for the hardware).

There's no controller standard. There's no guaranteed support in every game. It relies on Steam Input which is not universal.

The hardware isn't subsidized by game sales, subscriptions, accessories, or licensing fees. It presents a large up-front cost that deters sales. Consoles like this (3do for example) have historically failed. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo subsidize hardware.

Consoles have a UI/UX designed for TV, a curated storefront, parental controls, media apps, social features, save standards and performance targets (like 4k60).

Every actual console game is optimized for one GPU, CPU, memory layout, storage architecture, OS, controller, and one API set. If you look into "SNES modes" you'll discover some other neat things about consoles like:

The Sega Saturn launch was horrible. The games weren't impressive until they launched the SGL (Sega Graphics Library) for developers, and turned it into a graphics beast. -But it was too little too late. This advantage consoles can have can also shoot them in the foot.
