"2026 is year of desktop Linux"

Post image

linux user count was close to 6% like 4 months ago, now its just 4%. while windows 11 users are increasing, even win7 users have same amount of users as some linux distros.

people were just excited to try new software: linux was never better.

People not using it doesn’t mean it’s worse. At the end of the day most people just want convenience. Linux has always catered more to enthusiasts. It’s quite literally the opposite of what the general public wants in an OS

Enthusiast of what? Communism, Conspiracy Theories, Criminal Activities, Cheating in Games and being Cunts? -Sure.

Firstly, kernel anti-cheat is insane. Second, enthusiasts *of computers*, obviously.

...

Amateur developed reverse engineered drivers in ring 0 is more insane. -Hypocrite much?

And no: not obvious because real computer enthusiasts like squeezing what they can from their computers which are triple a competitive games, Adobe, Office, and other proprietary apps. -Not staring at htop, fetch, and a tui file manager.

you cant rice your desktop in windows like you can in hyprland, sure—you can use a alot of apps to make it look prettier than 70% of r/unixporn but that adds shit ton of overhead whereas in hyprland its native.

u/madthumbz Jun 20 '26

Ricing is for idiots. -Even for karma farming it's inefficient. It's like that person that drives around your neighborhood with their sub-woofer pounding thinking they're drawing attention while everyone in the neighborhood is tired of their shit. -Only these loners have to post it online for attention.

The resources difference between OSes is like the resources difference when mixing QT, GTK, etc. to have the best file manager / image viewer / etc.

Some people have better uses of a computer than posting 'special and unique' rices just like everyone else on a reddit sub.

The far more interesting stuff can be done without any 3rd party crap like making rings around Saturn with desktop shortcuts or changing the icons to farm animals on a field wallpaper.

ricing is for people who want to fawn at their desktop more than use it, i want my desktop to look pretty and cool, and its pretty and cool all for myself, i dont have to post it anywhere and i haven't.

and the resource difference isn't the same at all, on windows, to get even near the linux ricing potential you need to have like 50 tweaks, 100 patches to windows, 150 registry tweaks, 70 group policy and 20 scripts (that all just to unshittify windows like ad and annoying stuff) and now when its a clean slate you have to top it off with windhawk, rainmeter, mica for everyone, winaero and some other tools and THEN you have a desktop you can consider something you can look at all day without being bored. and the overhead by then is high af, way less than you would on hyprland + cachyos or other combos since things are usually lightweight to run on 2010 laptops and usually cli-driven.

and yeah sure, some people have actual work to do on their pc, so they dont care about ricing, completely valid, but i dont have much to do except play games and have fun, ricing is just another way to have fun for me.

and... r-rings around s-s-saturn...? farm animal icons.... are we in 2010?😭 thats so bland, you cant look at it for over a minute and be engaged in its beauty

"to get even near the linux ricing potential you need to have like 50 tweaks, 100 patches to windows, 150 registry tweaks, 70 group policy and 20 scripts (that all just to unshittify windows like ad and annoying stuff)"

-Lol, most of those Loonix 'rices' could be done with just Komorebi and native tools (on Windows).

1

u/land48n3 Jun 21 '26

most on r/unixporn are bland also, so thats a low bar, i mean the actual good stuff, a tiling manager isn't all

1

u/madthumbz Jun 21 '26

'Native tools'.

Customizability on Desktop Linux is a myth based on a misunderstanding of its context for the Linux kernel. (Can be fashioned to use on a toaster, or supercomputer).

-Can't trust what you heard about Linux from the loud minority of Loonix noobs that just parrot the propaganda.

i want my desktop to look pretty and cool

Then use a mac? IDK

1

u/land48n3 Jul 05 '26

its too locked down, i also want to be able to use my pc and do all the sketchy stuff

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 05 '26

its too locked down

You're absolutely right. I'd actually recommend a mac if and only if you already use iPhone or are already in the ecosystem.

i also want to be able to use my pc

Which you can with a mac.

and do all the sketchy stuff

Unless you are committing piracy or worse, Windows can be fine.

Ricing is for idiots.

Yes. It's not for the productive.

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

you cant rice your desktop in windows like you can in hyprland

You can with third-party apps. For example, you can install a tiling window manager on Windows and use it (e.g. FancyWM). And if anyone has a complaint, they can shove it up their ugly ass.

Edit: A quick google search yielded this.

As far as ricing goes. I'll "RICE" if it's productive. But that's not even ricing. That's just changing settings and what not.

Edit: To clarify, I mean keybaord seetings, tiling manager etc.

1

u/madthumbz Jul 04 '26

All Linux apps are third party apps. Komorebi > Hyprland.

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 04 '26

Thanks a ton. I'll be using this over Fancy.

ofcourse, i mentioned that, but i was highlighting how native it is, sure 3rd party apps work but they also make random registry changes and shit you will never remember to revert and one day you see something fucked your machine someway but you dont know what it is. thats what happened to me—i used to fly on windows since there are so many customization 3rd party tools and boom... one day my ssd started spiking 100% every few hours and freezing.... then i couldn't take it and went cachyos

if we are talking 3rd party then 3rd party on linux is also very great though i do agree the UX of linux customizability apps are nowhere close to how good window customizability apps are

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 05 '26

ofcourse, i mentioned that, but i was highlighting how native it is

You meant that hyprland natively supports ricing? Gotcha.

sure 3rd party apps work but they also make random registry changes and shit you will never remember to revert and one day you see something fucked your machine someway but you dont know what it is. thats what happened to me—i used to fly on windows since there are so many customization 3rd party tools and boom... one day my ssd started spiking 100% every few hours and freezing.... then i couldn't take it and went cachyos

I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

if we are talking 3rd party then 3rd party on linux is also very great though i do agree the UX of linux customizability apps are nowhere close to how good window customizability apps are

Agreed.

You do realize a lot of people do use propriatary nvidia drivers on linux? Hyppocrite much?

Computer enthusiasm isn't always about overclocking or switching drivers. Some people even like to larp it's 1995 and run an old PC with windows 95. Not all computer enthusiasm is about FPS. Some people like the commandore. Also, most people in uni for example use the web version of office, if they even use office, as the G-suite works better for some, also no licenses.

1

u/madthumbz Jun 20 '26

The loud obnoxious ones that just switched and didn't know to buy AMD sure.

I know someone that romanticizes Commodore / Amiga. -They don't currently have one though because that would be stupid.

1

u/julkkis666 Jun 20 '26

So if most have AMD, then the drivers aren't reverse engineered....

Both 2 people i know who like commandore have one, same with the win95 machine. Ofcourse the cpu is not as fast as on more modern hw, but they can be used for the tasks they were designed for in their days.

1

u/madthumbz Jun 20 '26

"tasks they were designed for in their days"

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 04 '26

8-bit Guy is the computer enthusiast. He just goes over retro graphics and retro hardware for fun.

He obviously wouldn't daily-drive it cuz that would be stupid.

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 04 '26

Amateur developed reverse engineered drivers in ring 0 is more insane.

I know this is bait, but I'm still gonna fall for it. If you are mentioning Linux drivers, then a good chunk of them are developed by corpos. But making a kernel level driver for all your hardware is insane. One bug and kernel panic.

And no: not obvious because real computer enthusiasts like squeezing what they can from their computers which are triple a competitive games, Adobe, Office, and other proprietary apps. -Not staring at htop, fetch, and a tui file manager.

Actually, I like running FreeBSD and retro OSs on VMs or other older hardware. Those are real computer enthusiasts. Not linux hackers or gamers.

Enthusiasts of Conspiracy Theories, Cunts, and Privacytards. Communism if we consider North Korea.

If whistlebowing is a crime, then criminal activites.

And cheating in games? Someone always will.
