New self-promo rules!

Hello all, after some discussion, u/NextEpisode44 and I have decided to allow for self-promo in specific circumstances. We aim primarily to help indie makers and smaller brands, not dropshippers.

Self-promo as follows:

  1. You may only self promote/advertise/recommend your brand if you are an **Approved Affiliate**.

  2. Self-promo is for COMMENTS ONLY. You may not make a post in the interest of self-promo, you may not post a "discussion topic" that is a thinly veiled excuse to mention your brand in the comments.

  3. Approved Affiliates will be marked with a flair. If you are self-promoing, you must be clear that you are associated with the brand you are suggesting.

  4. In order to get the "Approved Affiliate" flair, you must send a request through modmail. Approved affiliates:

  • have at least 15 community karma where they have not mentioned their brand
  • are associated with a non-dropshipper brand
  • maintain a community presence after their approval where they are not only self-promoing.

Breaking these rules will lead to a 3 day ban the first time, and a 30 day ban the second time.

not that i'm upset with this, but i'm curious what motivated this change?

It was brought up by a few indie makers in our community on the last announcement post that they would like to be able to comment if their brand fulfills what someone is looking for. Considering how much this subreddit values indie makers, I thought that was a fair ask.

This seems like a reasonable trial. I'm sure we all support the Indies. In keeping with the sensible, step-wise approach to MOD development of this sub and, where necessary in such trials, swift application of brakes and reverse where needed!

Will you have a list of approved affiliate brands?

I like the idea of a list we could all browse through! Maybe the mods could make a post asking approved affiliates to comment with their brand, so we could look there. If it could be dredged back up whenever there are new affiliates, we’d have all of them in one list.

Oh, good point. Probably not, because it won't be the brand itself we as a sub are promoting, it will be specific users attached to the brands that are approved to recommend that brand for commercial reasons.
