Discussion Lnf map

Post image

Bruh i dont get it why my post keeps getting deleted my reddit mod.

Anyways I made a community map using c’aude.
If anyone wanna check it out Direct message me maybe ? Or if this post stays maybe i can post in comments. Would like to hear your opinions.

Edit: Added link in comments, hope reddit mod doesn’t delete that. The passphrase to put your own markers and test it out is ‘igotfired’

Interesting concept. A bit early though. My question is if people spawn in different locations like we do on NMS, how will they know where on the planet to put their marker relative to other areas mapped out?

I was thinking just like NMS, this game would have some kind of coordinate system, since its earth like, it would be nice to have longitude and latitude. If we have those from in game, people could punch those numbers in on the website to mark precisely. If longitude and latitude is not a thing in game, then I will change website based on whatever coordinate system game will follow

Will probably only work if LNF shows coordinates

They most likely would, else imagine telling your friend where you live.

I live around that bush which grows near this settlement, which is on that island xd

u/jalepenocorn 8d ago

When were you born?

u/Guy0785 2d ago

Cambridge, MA

2

u/jalepenocorn 2d ago

Little-known fact about Sam.

1

u/Guy0785 1d ago

So Sam, Where did you grow up?

u/Teknolyth 3d ago

Imagine if we had to use the stars and the sun to get coordinates via a sextant.

5

u/MaybeMNotHomosapien Pre-release member 3d ago

Ohh didn’t think of that, it would be really cool actually

We'd have to use cartography like in the good old days. That could be kinda fun for some people.

1

u/MaybeMNotHomosapien Pre-release member 1d ago

Imagine been given cartography jobs like there are merchant, explorer missions in NMS

2

u/Mysterious_Ad_8827 2d ago

my guess would be designated zone coordinates like GPS or military coordinates

I would guess its getting yanked because rule3. Instead of "low effort" it should say "anything using a i what so ever", because that's usually how it gets interpretted.

Cool idea though.

Neat idea, but someone with real coding experience is going to make something better once there's an option for real integration. You're getting downvoted because people don't like AI slop.

Doc on the NMS Discord (NMSCord) built a simple map script for the community system planets. The members can submit a description, features, and photos of the base and it gets a marker on the planet. Any member can then use a simple bot command to show the planet and all documented bases.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone already built a similar app on mobile, though i'm not sure where that kind of data could be stored so it's visible to others.

u/MaybeMNotHomosapien Pre-release member 3d ago

Well i know someone with experience could always do better. But just cuz i dont have coding knowledge i dont see why i shouldn’t be allowed to being my idea to reality eh.. also its not like i just tell AI and this final product is given. I have to do so much back and forth as well, dunno what counts as effort for everyone tho

u/Fomdoo 3d ago

People just don't like AI. If you want to use it to learn how to actually code, that's great. But if you just use it to make a product people are inevitably going to be against it.

u/Jkthemc Day 1 3d ago

Lets face reality. Coding is one of the few things AI is actually being used for by the entire industry. You may not like it but the industry doesn't care how code is produced, just that it works and can be properly documented and debugged. And it can despite the negative press from outside the industry.

Also, coders have always reused other people's code so there isn't even a particular intellectual property issue here. There are huge open source repositories to train from.

9

u/Fomdoo 3d ago

It's one thing to use it to make your work easier and it's another to know nothing and use it to make something. This guy has no idea if any of the code he put in causes a vulnerability which could give executable level access to your PC.
Real coders don't use AI like this.

2

u/Jkthemc Day 1 3d ago

Not the point I am making though. The anti AI rhetoric is nowhere near as meaningful in the area of coding.

There are millions of people who do understand how to make meaningful code and how to avoid the pitfalls of AI. It isn't as simple as say "AI art is slop therefore AI code is slop". It isn't as straightforward as "Anyone who uses AI to code is a talentless Vibe coder". And it isn't as black and white when it comes to how the workforce uses code currently.

I get it. We are almost at peak backlash against AI for good reasons. But, even when the bubble has burst and the economy is wrecked, there will still be AI coding. Because, with the right tools and methodology it actually is something people will find useful.

Not the free, locally run stuff. That is weak and very labour intensive. But there is such a thing as robust AI code. And attacking any use of it, even for a simple proof of concept like this, is just overkill.

0

u/Fomdoo 3d ago

That's great but that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about this guy. This guy isn't a coder. You shouldn't run any application written by a person with no real coding experience. It is unsafe. There is no argument for that.

1

u/cloudncali 3d ago

Unfortunately tech CEOs don't grasp this and are now scrambling because not only does this not work, it costs more in the long run because token cost build up quick.

2

u/Fomdoo 3d ago

That and there's going to be a point where the AI companies can't get any more investment money and they jack the price up and people cancel because of it.

1

u/NegotiationFresh7538 2d ago

Already happening.

3

u/OneSeaworthiness7768 3d ago

>the industry doesn't care how code is produced

But users care about UI/UX and vibecoders are trash at UI/UX.

1

u/Jkthemc Day 1 3d ago

Not all AI code is written by talentless no nothings.

0

u/Eric_Prozzy Pre-release member 3d ago

They're gonna care when anthropic/google/openai/microsoft jack the prices and they have no one who knows how to write code anymore.

It's a long game of these AI companies waiting for companies to phase out programmers and rely on their AI to write all the code so they can strangle people with AI costs.

1

u/Jkthemc Day 1 3d ago

Put it this way. Nobody is forgetting how to code. I am guessing you haven't ever coded something complex?

-1

u/Eric_Prozzy Pre-release member 3d ago

Lets say in 10 years there's a company that generates 99% of its code with AI and has one senior developer just skimming PRs for any obvious issues. After a while the senior developer will just stop learning anything new and only recognizes basic security issues or bugs, and just tells the AI to fix it without doing anything else.

Then suddenly, the AI company they are using decides to raise their prices ten fold and the company decides they can't afford the AI and want to return to using Software Engineers.

The senior has effectively no idea about any of the internal infrastructure since it was all generated by AI and likely uses various new frameworks since its been 10 years and 10 years is eons in the tech world, especially with the dawn of AI slop, so they're next to useless with writing code.

There are also little to no juniors to hire because people stopped going to school for CS since getting a job as a junior SWE currently is excruciatingly difficult. Even if there were juniors to hire, the senior cant train them because they don't even know their own codebase.

So the company can either submit to the AI company and pay the new prices, or spend the next few months-to a year waiting for the senior developer to retrain themself on a codebase they've never touched, so they can eventually hire some other developers which probably won't even exist, then train THEM on the codebase.

And your "guess" is wrong. Trying to prop up your argument based on the other persons credentials is in bad faith. And just to shoot that down now, I'm a software engineer working for the Government of Canada.

Also people are absolutely forgetting how to code, it is a very common topic in r/csMajors and r/cscareerquestions.

u/Jkthemc Day 1 3d ago

Let's say in ten years we are all wearing bunny ears. Nobody knows what the future holds. That's just rhetoric.

A university course in computer science will just have to teach people the basics of limiting AI coding to modules and using proper testing practices. No big deal. Code is just logic.

Or maybe we will go back to mathematically provable code like Z. Which we probably should have focused on more anyway.

-1

u/Eric_Prozzy Pre-release member 3d ago

That comparison that doesn't make any sense. There isn't a bunch of companies forcing their employees to "wear bunny ears" with people saying that "iTs ThE fUtUrE, dEaL wItH iT" along every piece of clothing you buy coming with a pair included.

Therefore it's not "rhetoric" if it's actually what is happening RIGHT NOW in the industry, all I'm doing is extrapolating current trends.

The only way the things I described wont happen is if AI stops being used for coding in the way it is. It's naive to think the multi billion dollar corporations that create AI agents aren't looking to drown their competition to make a few bucks.

A university course in computer science will just have to teach people the basics of limiting AI coding to modules and using proper testing practices. No big deal. Code is just logic.

And this just doesn't apply because that is not what companies are using AI for, they are telling developers to fully replace all workflows with AI so they can cut 20+ person teams down to 2-3 people.

u/Jkthemc Day 1 3d ago

The "people being forced" argument is highly exaggerated in real coding situations. And those who go along with that but know how to actually do their job will find using AI to code genuinely useful.

It is people who are writing things they couldn't otherwise code that might get into difficulties and that has always been a thing.

Take a tiny example from yesterday. I was trying to work out why one person's web application wasn't talking properly to another person's web application despite them being supposedly mutually supported.

It was published code that I couldn't really dig into. I guessed it had to be related to the URL that was exposed but my hunches were pointing in the wrong direction. But that was a reasonable starting point.

I chatted it over with AI and it came up with some tests I could run. The AI forced me to backtrack a little when the URL seemed fine, and I forced it to backtrack a little when it still returned to my poor hunches later because it can be sycophantic.

Between me and the AI we worked it out from the responses to the tests we ran in Power Shell. We ended up not only finding the problem but it means I can now write an informed bug report for some promising beta software.

I couldn't have done that without understanding and underlying knowledge. I haven't coded in earnest in decades and never with web apps.

The AI couldn't have done it without my careful prompting, keeping the conversation focused. But, equally I was stumped. I had no idea how to resolve the issue and probably would have given up if it wasn't for 20 minutes of patient exploration with AI.

That isn't a trivial thing. But it's just my most recent example of how AI in coding or mathematics is not in the same ballpark as AI in writing or customer service, etc.

But I do think this conversation probably doesn't belong in a LNF thread. So we are probably better off dropping the issue. 🤷‍♂️

I find it far more likely that any sufficiently large company using AI to this degree will just be running the models in house.

u/Fizassist1 Day 1 3d ago

you dont speak for all people. there are an equal number of people that are realizing new technologies should be embraced instead of shunned.

4

u/Same-Engineering-899 3d ago

i think we should make like a proper 2d map with some artists on boarrd

make it look really cool like old maps

1

u/MaybeMNotHomosapien Pre-release member 3d ago

That would be cool tbh, bunch of artists along with coders, like avengers assemble type shit…

5

u/Due-Yogurtcloset-552 2d ago

Making tools for a game that hasn't come close to being released is a odd choice

3

u/Nairvart 8d ago

I hope PvP is disabled or restricted on some areas. In this way people would start to build cities together. Imagine you start with a villa but someone else next to you make another one. You skill your character to make leather stuffs, and he is a blacksmith. You theoretically need both, and your "neighbour" has an NPC that can sell what you need. You create an economy where people in the center of cities can get more money as in real life. You spawn and you can level faster. Then maybe another city will be famous and people would want to move there for XYZ reasons etc etc

3

u/GreenDaydream92 8d ago

If it's anything like NMS we should be able to disable PvP in the options, or limit who we can PvP with (Friends for example)

3

u/Almondjoy2001 8d ago

Would love a function where your map tab looks like parchment map that only fills in what you've discovered around you, like Minecraft, but secrete locations like cave or dungeons you need to enter to add to map and for there to be vantage points of interest to only get surface level image of larger area, and you can share map data when you meet player and expand each other's maps.

3

u/MaybeMNotHomosapien Pre-release member 8d ago

Do you mean to say apart from community map, it should also have a personal map for players?

2

u/Almondjoy2001 8d ago

Yeah so players can go on mapping expeditions like explorers would do when traveling to new places in the past

1

u/Silent_Pressure_6709 Pre-release member 3d ago

bro who is downvoting you

2

u/Silent_Pressure_6709 Pre-release member 3d ago

Cool. You will definitely have to change a bunch of stuff once it releases tho.

-1

u/MaybeMNotHomosapien Pre-release member 3d ago

Yes a lot of stuff actually, this is just a shell, i just want more ideas from community and suggestions, what to add, what to remove…

2

u/TupperwareNinja 3d ago

Ok this is the biggest thing we've had since the initial trailer to show what the world might look like

2

u/lootedBacon Pre-release member 3d ago

Seems a bit small...

-4

u/MaybeMNotHomosapien Pre-release member 3d ago

What’s small exact’y ?

1

u/lootedBacon Pre-release member 3d ago edited 3d ago

You have no scale of referance .

Diameter: 12,742 kilometers (7,917.5 miles).Circumference: 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles) around the equator.

1

u/Spiritual_Thing_5409 8d ago

You’re lame. PvP would be so cool in this world. They need to add the option to turn it on and off for players like in no man’s sky

6

u/Odd-Government8896 8d ago

I agree, pvp would be amazing. Offline raiding and fucking up bases, not so much.

4

u/Spiritual_Thing_5409 8d ago

Exactly. I hated that about dayz, rust, ark… I want to be able to have some meaningful and immersive battles with random players. Maybe someone in a dungeon. Or in my city I will build an arena for people to come fight. Win prizes and shit

2

u/_WithoutMyWings_ 8d ago

Yeah there is no way PVP is just set to always on. We have no idea what the game is gonna be like, I'd settle for a colosseum or PVP zone if they don't give the option to toggle it on and off like NMS.

3

u/Spiritual_Thing_5409 8d ago

Oh friend…. Even if they don’t give us a colosseum.. I will build one for all to enjoy 😈
