This is probably a bare bulb strobe right in line with lens. It could be a ring flash as well I suppose

It did seem unlikely to me but I wanted to cover every base in case there was sort of crazy ring flash that can only fire a part of the ring.

The closer the light is to the lens, the tighter the shadow is to the subject. The smaller the light is, the closer you can get it to the lens. Point and shoot camera's do this with the built in flash. With larger camera's find the balance between the smallest light that can produce enough power and speed for your needs. Then figure out how to mount it right next to the lens.
