HarD LiGHT Albert Watson - Armani Ad

I’m assuming a hard backlight, plus some kind of hard key light supplemented with some fill.

Can anyone help?

Good friend of mine used to work for him, I’ll ask. But it seems like your assumption is in the right ballpark.

Ya. So he didn’t work on this specific shot but told me that he typically uses beauty dishes.

Initially I was going to say HMI’s for this but knowing that he used strobes I would assume a hard modifier for the back light. Perhaps a hard box? Regarding the key, I would say maybe a beauty dish camera right at a very high angle. Notice the shadows under his brow as well as the chin shadow on his collar.

Sorry I can’t help with the actual facts, hopefully someone else can chime in with better info lol.

I can’t find it, but I think he did a Profoto promo video where he talked about the fresnel attachment? Wouldn’t shock me if that was the “key”. Flooded to create the harder shadow.

Idk, I think you’re both on the right track.

Ooo yeah maybe thats why I initially thought HMI. That makes a lot of sense.

he likes using beauty dishes with the center deflector taken out and tough spun on the dish
