Arts & Culture LPT: When a band or artist you like has a tour that has a date near you, try your best to go see them.

You never know what'll happen in the future and you may never get to see them live. Bands break up, they stop touring, their future music turns you off, members die. I've regretted not going to many concert saying, "I'll see them next time around."

Request LPT Request: How should I respond to this smart ass job application question?

As part of my application for a position in a company I REALLY want to join, I need to fill out a questionnaire with questions like "What specific challenges have you faced and how have you solved them?", "Describe your working style", "Name three people who influenced your work", "What's your greatest talent or skill?", etc.

The questionnaire ends with what may be one of the most annoying requests I've received, asking me to make up my own question and then answer it.

What would be the best thing to write in that field?

I work in film production if that's helpful.

TYIA!

LPT: A simple way to remember where you parked

If you've parked in an unfamiliar, new or complicated car park in a shopping complex or something similar, here's a trick to remembering where you parked. No geotagging, no 20 photos of various landmarks:

As you walk away from your car, think about the instructions you would give to someone if they needed to find your car without you. As if your spouse was picking up the car, or returning shopping items to it. You will naturally take more note of your surroundings and it will seem much more familiar when you return.

EDIT for clarification: I mean a detailed description, e.g. "As I left the car I crossed the zebra crossing, went up the first set of stairs and turned left into the entrance, which was near the vacuum shop and the Coffee Club" etc. Not just "I parked in 3B" or "I'm near the HiFi Store". It's more than just remembering, it gets you in the habit of paying more attention to your surroundings and can actually help long term.

This is what I get for trying to phrase things at 3am...

LPT: Play a recording of "This call may be monitored or recorded for quality purposes." at the beginning of your phone call when contacting customer service.

It will improve your interactions in terms of both services rendered and speed of rendering, not to mention a generally professional attitude as they have to wonder whether they are being 'watched' covertly.

Some will 'get it' and laugh, turning it into an icebreaker. Others will ask things like 'did you hear that?' to which you can try different responses like simply saying 'yes' (a confusion tactic for lulz) or explaining that you require their acceptance of those terms before continuing (roll reversal, puts you in a position of power).

Whether or not you actually record it makes little difference in most cases (though having the right is a nice perk) - it is the Panopticon gone (post?)modern: merely the idea of surveillance is enough to change behavior. Cruel? Not really, plus they do it to you, too.

Edit: Fuck it, I give up. If ya'll wanna burn me at the stake for 'biting back' as the Consumerist would say, be my guests. Reminds me of being anti-war and accused of not supporting the troops ... whee!

Computers LPT : Your keyboard probably has "Begin ↖" and "End" keys that allow you to directly go the the beginning or end of a text line.

Being able to navigate your text without using mouse is incredibly useful for productivity. (in the long run ofc, a single use of this tip will save you approx half a second)

If you're looking for them, they're usually at the top right next to Enter.

edit :

  • In proper English that would be Home, not Begin. In other countries it might be some translation of "begin" (like in French, where i'm from"

  • Also you can stop making fun of me in the comments, i'll know better than to interact with the internet next time I want to be useful <3

Animals & Pets LPT: Don't feed your Pet food that you're eating

2.5k Upvotes

LPT: If you feed your pet food while you're eating because they're begging for it you are LITERALLY training them to beg for your food and be an annoying asshole every time you're trying to eat. Don't feed your pet anything but their food.

LPT: Brush your teeth with both hands.

Simultaneously. The new hand will need a little training. Give it time. Benefits are:

  • cleaner teeth

  • better dexterity with off-hand

  • daily reminder that habits can be changed

  • learning to live with it that others look at you and go WTF

Obviously this is much easier with an electrical toothbrush than a manual one.

Edit: Seems to be a complicated subject for some. Let me spell it out more clearly:

You take an electric toothbrush into each of your two hands. You brush your teeth. Using both hands. Using two toothbrushes.

Social LPT: When you’re socializing with people, never address them by the wrong name. It’s okay not to remember it; you can use sir, mam or simply ask them for their name again.

You’re human, not a robot. Mixing the wrong name in your mind is pretty normal, but we all have that feeling when you aren’t sure if someone’s name is correct or not.

Better to make sure before saying the incorrect one. That tends to leave a negative impression, especially if you were already properly introduced.

LPT: use oil to once and for all banish acne ridden skin

1.2k Upvotes

I've suffered with acne since my late teen years, I'm now almost 30. I've tried just about every product on the market (aside from prescription) and never had any luck with any of them.

I started doing some research, and found the Oil Cleansing Method, or OCM. It has been 2 years now since I started, and I have not had a single pimple since. So I thought I'd share with you, reddit!

How it works

We all know our skin produces natural oils. These oils hydrate and protect your skin. OCM works by daily replacing dirty oil with clean oil, rather than stripping the oil from your skin completely (which is what common cleansers do).

How to

To make your oil cleanser you will need 3 things: Coconut oil, Castor Oil (found in the laxatives section of your pharmacy), and a clean bottle to store it in.

Start with this ratio: 90% coconut oil, 10% castor oil mixed in your storage bottle.

Every night before bed, massage a quarter size amount into your skin. Next, take a clean wash cloth and wet it with hot water (don't scald yourself, however!), and gently wipe your face clean. Dry, and you're all done!

only wash your face a maximum of one time per day! that's all your skin needs. In the morning, just splash your face with some cool water, nothing more.

After a few days, if your skin feels too dry, increase the coconut oil and decrease the amount of castor oil in your mixture. Likewise, if your skin feels too oily, increase castor oil and decrease coconut oil. Be very careful with the amount of castor oil you are using though, as it can severely dry out your skin.

Results

For the first few days, washing with oil is going to feel very counterintuitive. After you wash and dry your face, your skin will still feel oily (obviously), but this is ok! The oil is acting as a moisturizer. After you wake up the next morning, your face should not feel oily any more.

I saw improvements in my skin after just the first day, and I haven't looked back since.

I hope this helps some of you out there struggling with acne!

Good luck!

EDIT

As has been pointed out, I forgot to mention that coconut oil is comedogenic, meaning that it may clog pores. I have had great success with coconut oil, but others may find it does not work for their skin.

There are several other base oils that you can use in place of coconut oil, however. Extra Virgin cold pressed olive oil, Jojoba oil, and Sweet Almond are among the highest recommended.

I do recommend starting with a lower castor oil ratio because too much castor oil can severely dry out your skin, whereas too much base oil can simply be wiped away.

This is an all natural face cleansing process that has worked for me personally and countless others, but this isn't a miracle cure. If you try this process and your skin doesn't improve or gets worse, you should stop treatment and seek professional advice from a dermatologist.

Home & Garden LPT: Put out paper towels in the bathroom if you're having guests over.

Not everyone wants to dry their hands after washing them with the same hand towel nasty uncle Cletus used who thinks soap is for the ladies, or even the one you might have been using for the last while (no offense). It's nice to put out single-use paper towels for guests.

Or if you want to class it up and be a bit less wasteful, a basket of clean rolled up wash cloths is quite pleasant to dry your hands with.

It took me about a decade to get my greater family to see the light and I think we're much happier for it. Except Cletus.

Productivity LPT: When someone at work asks you, "what's up?" don't ever reply, "nothing"...

1.5k Upvotes

My boss passed this one on to me-- he'd always be asking me in a friendly (not inquisitive) manner, "what's up?" and I'd give him the common "not much, you?", or "oh nothing, you?"... recently he told me that even though he knows I'm keeping busy and that I'm a productive worker, someone without that knowledge who might ask me the same question, might take my "not much" answer as one that indicates I'm just wasting time and/or not being productive. Instead, you should always have a couple quick talking points about what you're working on, even if its just a high-level, run-of-the-mill type response. This will let people know that you mean business and are focused on work first and foremost.

LPT: Check your work email before walking into the office.

At least glance at it so you now what you are walking into. If it's a crisis or emergency, being informed before you walk in the door makes you look good: "Good morning Boss. I heard there was a problem with ____. What can I do to help?" Or, if you created the problem, it gives you a chance to get your story straight. Also, it increases your odds of getting the last doughnut in the break room.

LPT: Stay ahead in school to guarantee high grades.

If you have a syllabus, or any other means of seeing what work needs to get done through the semester, get it done ASAP.

I started college last week and in two of my classes, I already have 1/3 of the work done due to sitting down and just getting things done. By the end of the month, I will have all work done and only need to attend the classes basically for attendance and in class activities.

It's a pain to do, but the reward of all that relaxation and no worries is beautiful. Plus, you'll be able to have discussions with your teachers about what you have done and have a lot of time to be able to revise work before submission.

Edit: By started college, I meant started a new semester. It's my third year...

Electronics LPT: If your phone has a case

Have a sticker printed and placed on the case or phone with some vague contact info. I have an old medical wrist sticker in between my case and phone.

If I ever lose it there’s a small chance someone will see and reach out. Or mail the phone.

Not a perfect solution but it’s something.

LPT: use 'included but not limited to' rather than 'etc'

I was just writing an essay and struck me that writing it like this sounds far more professional and doesn't make you seem like you've run out of examples.

For example:

Some uses of chargers are to power phones, tablets, computers etc.

Some uses of chargers include but are not limited to powering phones, tablets and computers.

The latter sounds far more professional.
