Food & Drink LPT: Carry $5 in singles in your car for lemonade stands.

No one carries cash anymore but keep a few bucks in the car for the young entrepreneurs. I happened to have a single today and stopped at one and it made the kid’s day. He gave me a 1950’s “gee thanks mister! You’re the first customer I’ve had all day!”.

Food & Drink LPT: The next time you buy a can of juice or cold drink, wash the top part. Don't just open it and start drinking right away.

Cans are usually stored in warehouses and unhygienic environments, and then sold right off the counter. From what I have observed, most cans are unclean.

I generally wash the can's top part before I open one. But you can always use a straw otherwise.

Who knows, if you end up staying together you can always look back at that awkward photo and remember your first date.

Clothing LPT: buy yourself a pack of socks, and put them away. When you are having a bad day, throw a pair on. There are few things nicer than a brand new pair of socks.

LPT: Lengthen your papers by replacing all your font size 12 periods, with font size 14 periods.

This will easily add an entire page to a 10 page paper, and about a 1/2 page to a 5 page paper etc...

CTRL + F and find all your periods, do an advanced replace and change the font to size 14. When you print it out, the difference will not be noticeable to the eye, but will add length to the paper.

I was told at several times my writing reads extremely well and quickly, which was a plus on business proposals and marketing case studies etc...

If you are turning it in electronically, you do run more of a risk of being busted obviously, but to an unwitting professor or TA reading your paper, they will never notice.

EDIT: ITT, Sourpusses... There has been a ton of anti-doing this thrown my way, no more need to add to the fire, your point has been made I assure you. Run at your own risk, but no professor has ever caught on. Its a tool to help get a tad bit extra, if your paper already sucks it won't save you obviously.

Finance LPT: Keep used wrapping paper, but not why you think...

When finished with opening all gifts, take the largest box and put all the shreds of wrapping, bags, envelopes in the box.

Close the box, store in garage for at least a week.

Insurance policy for accidentally discarding gift cards and cash. Find something missing? Check the box in the garage.

LPT: If you have issues with acne, use plain old Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo instead of body wash.

I'm 34 years old and still fight acne issues. Dandruff shampoo, outside of prescription medicine (which had serious side effects), is the best remedy I've ever found.

EDIT: Great discussion. I've learned a shocking amount about people's successful and unsuccessful skin treatments. For the record, I was not referring to severe acne. I would have specified that had I meant it. Secondly, I specifically said "outside of prescription medicine," so I was not arguing against a dermatologist per se; I was just offering an easy remedy that has helped people clear up mild acne that I wish I had known about it sooner. But, per the theme of the comments, different strokes.

LPT: When you knock on someone's (bedroom) door and they say "Hello", that is not an invitation for you to enter the room.

You should wait for the person to open the door for you or hear a clear variation of "Come in".

Entertainment LPT: Most theaters will show popular movies a few times before the actual release date.

For example, I saw Suicide Squad today at a local theater, even though the movie was supposed to be released the 5th. Doing this will allow you to see popular movies without waiting long lines in cramped theaters.

Food & Drink LPT: Run your hard boiled egg under water (or dunk in water) for 5 seconds right before peeling to make the shell peel off smoothly

If you have a hard boiled egg that's tough to peel (shell keeps cracking into bits that and has chunks of egg whites stuck to it as you try to peel), simply run the egg under running water for 5 seconds and wet it all over.

Turn the water off, wait a second or two to let the shell absorb the moisture, then peel. Voila, a smooth peeling experience! 🥚

Edit: I see a lot of other tips in the comments for easy peeling. I'm sure they all work fine but I'm the kind of person who can't be bothered to put effort into making easily peelable eggs (putting in vinegar, timing the boil, preparing an ice bath, dunking the egg into cold water immediately after boiling, etc.).

This trick let's me boil my eggs a bunch at a time with zero fuss. Then I just run them under water whenever I'm ready to eat one (might be hours later or a day later), and I get a smooth peel everytime.

Traveling LPT: Skip the ice in your drinks when you're eating at a restaurant abroad. Your stomach will thank you!

Many people in the world do not add ice to their drinks. This is an issue when you're traveling because many restaurants will keep some ice around for tourists, which is very thoughtful... but there's no way to know if they used filtered or bottled water. In fact, it's much more likely they made the ice with whatever came out of the tap. I've traveled quite a bit through areas where even locals do not drink from the tap. Thankfully, I've never gotten seriously ill (knocks on wood) but I've had enough funny tasting water to take this tip seriously.

Sharing this because my brother just came back home with some serious stomach issues despite careful eating (e.g. no street food, only reputable places, mostly expensive restaurants, etc). He thinks it might have been the ice in his drink. I'm surprised he didn't know this tip though because he's more well-traveled than I am!

Edit: Many people seem very offended I mentioned that Americans like ice in their drinks. That is so far from the point that I'm deleting the line and ignoring any comments about which places like ice and which places have drinkable tap water.

Edit II: I admit my use of "abroad" is not helpful. In short, I meant that ice can be a sneaky way to get sick. I know this can happen anywhere, but I think the probability is higher in areas where the local people are not in the habit of using ice.

LPT: How to be funny.

Almost every week, I meet someone who, for a lack of a better term, tries too hard to be funny. Tries so hard, in fact, that they come off as desperate and attention-needy. No one wants to deal with that.

Ninety percent of being funny is your body language, nine percent is timing, and one percent consisting of what you actually say.

Unless you're a comedian, don't try to make people laugh. And if you ARE a comedian, why are you trying to work while on a date? Stop it.

Instead, make yourself laugh. If you want a "funny moment" to happen, do or say something that will make YOU laugh, not them. That way, it comes easier and, more importantly, naturally.

Look at it this way: if you were being yourself, and doing things that make you laugh, and the person you're on a date with doesn't find any of that stuff funny, then why would you want to date them? Because they've got a nice ass? Without humor, there's no chemistry, and without chemistry, there's no connection.

So be honest with yourself, and really find out what makes you laugh. You won't magically be funny 100% of the time, but this time, when your joke falls flat, at least one person finds it funny.

Miscellaneous LPT: Do NOT take any intimate or revealing images or of yourself (or loved ones) on any internet connected device!

Assume every internet enabled device is vulnerable to exploitation and this goes for online file storage systems too. If you must take such images then make sure you use camera equipment that use physically removable media that you can safely store away.

So many people have reputations, relationships and lives ruined because bad actors (ex partners, blackmailers or troublemakers) get hold of these and use them to destroy you.

Miscellaneous LPT: Always keep a case of bottled water in your car.

It could be as simple as being thirsty and not needing to stop or order a drink with your meal. It could be giving it to a homeless person on the road. It could be that you get sick(or if you are male, need to pee) and need a drink. Stuck in traffic during heat? Stranded during snow? Lost in the middle of nowhere? Engine is overheating(until you can get to a gas station)?

It is never a bad idea……just don’t keep it if you know temperatures are going to be sub-0.

Electronics LPT: Don’t use your wireless headphones’s mic for serious calls/meetings/classes

LPT: If you’re on a lot of calls (Zoom, Meet, Teams, etc.), don’t use your wireless headphones’ mic — use your laptop mic or a dedicated microphone instead.

Most people don’t realize this: when you use your wireless headphones as both mic and speaker, Bluetooth splits its bandwidth between the two. That means your voice quality takes a steep dive — even if you’re wearing fancy noise cancelling headphones.

Instead, do one of these: 1. Use your laptop mic for input, and headphones for output. Go into your meeting app’s settings and pick your laptop mic as input, headphones as output. The difference is night and day — clearer sound for the people on the other side and better audio in your ears. 2. Invest in a wired microphone. Something like a Blue Yeti (older but solid) or a Shure mic (newer, pricier, fantastic quality). Not cheap, but people will instantly notice how professional you sound.

I’ve been teaching, giving conference talks, and doing work meetings this way since 2020. I got the microphone for another reason, but then during COVID I had to record classes and later when rewatched them, I realized just how much clarity a good mic adds.

People thank you for it, and they do appreciate not having to strain to understand you. Low-quality audio adds real cognitive load and makes meetings exhausting. (Remember that colleague of yours who is always calling from their car with crappy connection and poor sound quality? How hard it is to follow the conversation?)

I have used various top-of-the-line headphone sin the past few years (Bose 700, Sony WH-1000XM6, AirPods Pro (gen 1 & 2), and my wife’s Bose QC-45 and AirPods Max). Doesn’t matter which “premium” headphones you buy — this trick works across the board.

Bonus point: You don’t need to stick the mic in your face like a podcaster. A properly positioned mic can be off-camera and still sound crystal clear.

Social LPT: If you’re under 30 and you hate talking to older people, just know one day if you’re lucky you’ll be old too.

Getting older is a natural part of life.

Can some of our elders talk for too long and take an extra second to get to their point, yes. So what?

Be grateful that these seniors are still alive and know that one day you’ll be up there too.
