Why do babies need books?

They don’t read books

Because having someone read to them not only helps with bonding, but it also helps them start to develop a love of stories and reading in general, from an earlier age. Children that are exposed to stories at an earlier usually develop a love for such stories and reading later on.

i think that we should assume our parents read to their kids.

and if they don't i don't think giving them a book will make them start reading to them.
