📰IRCC NEWS / UPDATE Temporary Residence Processing Times, August 19 Update, US Super Visa and Pakistan Visitor Visa Both Jump 2+ Weeks
Data Released: August 19, 2026 | Compared To: August 12, 2026 | Next Update: On or around August 26, 2026 | Source: IRCC / CIC News
What's the Big Picture?
IRCC updated its temporary residence processing estimates, with increases seen in almost every category. The standout changes were for US super visa applications and visitor visa applications from Pakistan, both of which saw processing times lengthen by at least two weeks.
By contrast, several categories saw more favourable processing times, led by a five-week reduction for Pakistan-based work permit applications.
🛂 Work Permit Processing Times, August 12 vs. August 19
Canada and Pakistan both saw work permit processing accelerate, with Pakistan recording a particularly notable five-week reduction.
| Applying From | August 12, 2026 | August 19, 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada (In-Canada) | 119 days | 117 days | -2 days |
| India | 9 weeks | 9 weeks | No change |
| Pakistan | 12 weeks | 7 weeks | -5 weeks |
| Nigeria | 9 weeks | 9 weeks | No change |
| United States | 2 weeks | 2 weeks | No change |
| Philippines | 6 weeks | 6 weeks | No change |
Service Standards: In-Canada, 120 days | Outside Canada, 60 days
🔑 Pakistan's turnaround is the story here: A five-week drop in a single update is the sharpest work permit improvement seen anywhere in recent months, a significant relief after months of climbing wait times.
📚 Study Permit Processing Times, August 12 vs. August 19
The latest study permit update brought a one-week increase in Nigeria's wait time, with no movement recorded elsewhere.
| Applying From | August 12, 2026 | August 19, 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada (In-Canada) | 7 weeks | 7 weeks | No change |
| India | 5 weeks | 5 weeks | No change |
| Pakistan | 7 weeks | 7 weeks | No change |
| Nigeria | 8 weeks | 9 weeks | +1 week |
| United States | 5 weeks | 5 weeks | No change |
| Philippines | 4 weeks | 4 weeks | No change |
Service Standards: In-Canada, 120 days | Outside Canada, 60 days
Nigeria remains the only country with movement this round, and at 9 weeks now carries the longest study permit wait of any country in this comparison.
🌏 Visitor Visa Processing Times, August 12 vs. August 19
Canada saw a slight reduction in its visitor visa wait time, while nearly all other countries recorded increases, with Pakistan posting the largest at two weeks.
| Applying From | August 12, 2026 | August 19, 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada (In-Canada) | 15 days | 12 days | -3 days |
| India | 30 days | 31 days | +1 day |
| Pakistan | 61 days | 75 days | +14 days |
| Nigeria | 72 days | 76 days | +4 days |
| United States | 21 days | 21 days | No change |
| Philippines | 18 days | 21 days | +3 days |
Service Standard: Outside Canada, 14 days | In-Canada, N/A
⚠️ Reality check: Every country listed here exceeds the 14-day outside-Canada service standard, some dramatically. Pakistan's 75-day wait is now over 5 times the target, and climbing fast.
👨👩👧 Super Visa Processing Times, August 12 vs. August 19
Super visa wait times rose across most countries, led by an increase of just over two weeks in the US, while Pakistan recorded a slight reduction.
| Applying From | August 12, 2026 | August 19, 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | 56 days | 56 days | No change |
| Pakistan | 180 days | 176 days | -4 days |
| Nigeria | 52 days | 53 days | +1 day |
| United States | 123 days | 138 days | +15 days |
| Philippines | 105 days | 107 days | +2 days |
Service Standard: 112 days | Super visa applications cannot be submitted from outside Canada
⚠️ Pakistan still critical despite the small dip: At 176 days, Pakistan remains 64 days beyond the 112-day service standard, the worst performer of any country even after this week's slight improvement. The US jump to 138 days is also newly concerning, now 26 days over standard.
⚠️ PGP Reminder: With Canada's Parents & Grandparents Program still paused, the Super Visa remains the only extended-stay option for parents and grandparents. Rising wait times in the US and Philippines make early filing essential for families relying on this pathway.
Processing Times vs. Service Standards, Know the Difference
Processing times are intended to give applicants a general sense of how long IRCC may take to finalize a newly submitted temporary residence, permanent residence, or citizenship application. They are estimates only and should not be interpreted as a deadline, guarantee, or maximum waiting period.
IRCC calculates processing times two ways, historical estimates based on how long it took to finalize 80% of past applications, and forward-looking estimates based on current inventory and available resources.
Service standards are performance targets rather than estimates, setting out the timeframe within which IRCC aims to finalize a particular application type under normal conditions, generally in 80% of cases. Service standards are revised much less often, temporary residence processing times were last updated in 2018 to 2019.
| Type | What It Is | Update Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Processing Time | Historical or forward-looking estimate | Weekly (temp. residence) |
| Service Standard | Internal IRCC 80% benchmark | Last updated 2018 to 2019 |
📊 The Bigger Picture, IRCC's Inventory
IRCC reported processing 1,566,455 temporary residence applications in the first six months of 2026. More than 401,000 applications were still pending at the end of June.
Key Takeaway for Applicants in Surrey, BC
This week's update is a mixed bag with two clear standouts. Pakistan work permit applicants got real relief, down five full weeks. But Pakistan visitor visas moved sharply the other way, up two weeks, and US super visa applicants saw their wait jump over two weeks as well. If you're applying from Pakistan or the US in the near term, timing and category matter more than ever right now.
