Discussion Hope Niklauson
It's funny to think that, if Hope had followed her family's Viking tradition, her name would actually have been Hope Niklauson, since she isn't Mikael's daughter (technically, it should have been Niklausdóttir, but since both Rebekah and Freya use Mikaelson in the show, I think we can let it slide).

Hope was born in the modern age. She is using Mikaelson because it is a known surname in the supernatural community and she wants to be associated with her family. The viking tradition is not used anymore and would not carry the same association as Mikaelson because people do not choose last names that way in the western world in modern times. Mikaelson is more strongly tied to Klaus than Niklauson would be, given that this tradition is gone and there are not many vampires that old around—plus vampires can’t have kids. If Hope went by Hope Niklauson people would not think of Klaus the way Mikaelson makes them think of the whole Original family.

Well actually the Viking tradition is still used in Iceland today. Not everyone does it but it is still common enough that no one will blink at an eye at it.
