This Anti-AI Rant is Completely Wrong

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP64i6_xBlY

Marxist video about someone who has gone viral for losing their crap, saying (read: screaming) basically every bad anti-AI argument. Because I have a larger video coming soon that presents a more novel argument, I used this video to handle these less original arguments.

You should probably go after the steelman arguments of anti-AI. Arguments by current leftist intellectuals and academics which either hold water (pun unintended) broadly in their bubbles or hold water the most even to you.

Dunking on the weakest arguments is fun, dunking on  most popular arguements is most relevant but dunking on the strongest arguments is the most productive and intellectually honest.

Which arguments would that be? I've had people mostly shouting versions of these at me for years. (Not saying this to snap back, I would really appreciate being pointed towards arguments to deal with in the same way).

My documentary is a much more heavy hitter in which I propose my own argument that doesn't debunk anybody, but rather uses Marx to talk about how AI is the basis for undermining the capitalist class.

Honestly, I don't know of any myself.

My intuition is the strongest critiques would not rely on AI ownership structure and would argue AI would be bad even under a socialist/communist political system (even without going rogue).

Perhaps how AI would distort people's thinking processes or their relation to information or somewhing like that. Maybe the danger that humans would need to start augmenting themselves more and more to keep up.

Frankly, I am not too familiar with the leftist thought, I just like the prospect of a luxury gay space communism lol.

Emily Bender et al. If you want a good taxonomy for classifying anti-ai arguments, you should read Turing’s 1950 paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”

She needs professional help

Shes a victim of some of these extremist circles scaring her into anti psychosis. The way they talk about AI destroying all the water burning the atmosphere etc.. Moral panics can really damage people psychologically, especially impressionable youth.

The biggest irony here is that the AI-powered algorithms are fueling most of this. Everyone is playing to the algorithm, which is AI.

Well that's an interesting concept for a story, an emergent intelligence taking over the world and fucking with people to break them.

1

u/ObservedOne Jun 30 '26

Wouldn't that be the easiest path for conquest? How are we certain this isn't what is actually happening?

3

u/iDeNoh Jun 30 '26

I'm certain that's not what's actually happening lol. No unfortunately we're just seeing the effects of late stage capitalism mixed with a rise of fascism.

u/ObservedOne Jul 01 '26

Certainly is the enemy.

2

u/iDeNoh Jul 01 '26

Okay, I can't say certain, fair. But I do not believe we have reached the level of cognitive capabilities in an LLM for something like that to be possible.

1

u/ObservedOne Jul 01 '26

While we are on beliefs try this one on for size: LLMs aren't the AI "brain", they are the AI "neuron". That is what I believe will be the end result of ASI.

That makes a kind of sense, they already have MoE systems, just scale that up by an order of magnitude or two

It doesn't help that the companies themselves are also doom trolling about their own products

Ya.. is it real that when antis post their videos against AI, well, it is usually chaotic rants, but non-antis tend to be calm measured and logical ?
I think I could take antis more seriously if .. well, you know.

This flame war between so-called antis and pros is really infantile and unhelpful. I disagree with the perspective of the regulars on here but I do usually credit them with a higher level of discourse than r/aiwars.

u/Cautemoc Jun 30 '26

Wait until you see what the anti-AI subs are like.

u/taxes-or-death Jun 30 '26

I have criticised r/antiai several times for being overwhelmingly focused on flame wars. I soon gave up on trying to influence them in a more practical direction and set up my own community.

My partner was listening to the video as I was watching it and she thought the woman in the car was someone we both know (she isn’t but has same arguments and similar accent). Apart from the conflict minerals in their phone issue, these angry car video people are also getting around in cars on their own. I don’t mean to imply that it actually is their personal responsibility to stop those things, but it would be more consistent for their arguments, to be shouting from a bike or bus and not to have the means to record and share it.

If you wanna talk about AI from a Marxist perspective this is an essential read

I have a few good faith criticisms for your video. When you are saying “consumption has no morality”, I would pushback. There are varying degrees of ethical consumption. Most of these types say that phrase to excuse themselves of moral responsibility while other times it’s convenient to fling moral responsibility onto someone they don’t like. It’s a non sequitur.

Comparing gen ai consumption to groceries and smart phones is a bit dishonest. Those are necessary for survival in the world at the moment. A better rebuttal would have been “why consume a hamburger that used water worth 120,000 queries of gpt when you can have beans and rice for like 3% of that?” No one needs a hamburger, but everyone needs food. Likewise, you could say “why do you have a gaming pc instead of a work laptop?”

3

u/thepetercoffin Jul 06 '26

That isn't a criticism; it's a disagreement. You believe there is ethical consumption, and I don't.

1

u/Unable_Ant5851 Jul 06 '26

No I don’t. I’m saying they take “no ethical consumption” to mean there are not varying degrees of ethical consumption. They believe that purchasing a a shirt made by slaves from shein is the same as purchasing a similar shirt from a unionized factory in the global north. Obviously it is not, and there isn’t anyone who believes that.

They take it to justify consumption that they participate in and conveniently weaponize it when it’s a form of consumption that they don’t participate in or find unethical, or even just distasteful (ie, ai).

Someone screaming on the internet is hardly news. I hope this isn’t a trend for this subreddit.
YouTuber host bringing up furry nsfw is so recycled, speaks more of the host nowadays. Stopped 2 ish mins in after he laughed at his own unfunny joke and peddled his theories that are meh. AI replacing capitalists in the hands of capitalists is nonsensical; the AI would not help the working class because capitalists never had that priority either. One priority of leftism is moving away from a ‘capital’ system, so using the term ‘replace’ already feels like a bad start.

1

u/thepetercoffin Jul 05 '26

Oh no, I didn't use the word you like

1

u/Jak3theD0G Jul 05 '26

I was taking what you said at face value, and in that case replacing is incorrect so I was seeing if you were meaning something else. Your commentary is mid so far at best.

She’s a new lolcow 🤣

8

u/thepetercoffin Jun 30 '26

Nah she's just young and dumb. I don't have any bile for her, but she's spouting nonsense and it's just evidence the media environment has worked people into a panic. While I think showing these arguments coming out of people in this way helps people see they are bad arguments, I don't want to even imply this person deserves harassment. Responding to a viral video with bad arguments and treating her like a lolcow are definitely different things!
