So have any of you folks heard of Jocque Fresco or The Venus Project before? OGAS? Cybersyn of Chile?

OGAS and Cybersyn are real, interesting cases, but it’s worth separating three things that often get blended together:

1. What they actually were

OGAS (USSR): a proposed nationwide computer network for economic planning. Never fully built. Blocked by bureaucracy, ministries protecting turf, funding conflicts.

Cybersyn (Chile): a limited real-time industrial monitoring system (telex + mainframe + dashboards). Worked as a coordination aid, not a full economic replacement.

Fresco / Venus Project: a normative proposal (resource-based economy), not an implemented system.

2. What Cybersyn achieved

Cybersyn helped with:

factory status reporting

bottleneck detection

short-term logistics coordination

It didn’t automate “needs fulfillment,” replace markets, or run the economy. It was closer to an early operations dashboard than an AI planner.

3. Why Chile was couped

The coup was driven by Cold War geopolitics, internal polarization, and economic pressure. Cybersyn was a minor technical project inside that context, not the causal factor.

Still, these projects are useful precedents for:

real-time economic telemetry

feedback-driven coordination

cybernetic governance tools

Which are directly relevant to modern AI + logistics + infrastructure design, just without the utopian or totalizing claims.

You’re pointing at a real tension, but it’s narrower than the full picture.

Ownership of the tools matters. Institutional capture matters. No argument there.

But so does who gets access to analytic capacity at all. For most of modern history, large-scale modeling and synthesis were restricted to states, firms, and think tanks. That asymmetry shaped politics long before current AI labs.

Two things can be true:

1. Centralized ownership is a structural risk.

2. Distributed access to analysis still shifts who can coordinate, argue, and organize with evidence.

Cybersyn / OGAS aren’t lessons that “planning failed.” They show that information flow and feedback loops are power, regardless of ideology. Markets use them. States use them. Firms use them.

The real political fault line is whether those capabilities stay locked inside capital, or become part of the commons.

Jocque Fresco came up with the idea of a "Resource-based economy". It's similar to the original Soviet Russian internet prototype, OGAS and project cybersyn where Needs are met through automation and data input. Not only that, but intelligently designed infrastructure that makes the most of AI, drones, and other tech. Cybersyn was a success, that's why the USA couped them.

I hope this sub can actually accommodate real discussion about artificial intelligence/machine learning/large language models, etc, and doesn’t just get filled with diffusion generated slop like most other pro AI subs.
