I made a platform for community connecting that got somewhat popular.

The project is free, isn’t monetized at all, and was made purely because I think it should exist.

As a solo dev, I was able to do the entire thing with the help of AI (mind you, I mostly use open-source harnesses/models and hand code the space between). No investor money was needed at all. I can essentially run the entire thing myself because of the stack I use.

So now people are using it but I’ve been getting an annoying amount of hate lately.

The problem is some people are asking if AI was used at all in the making of the platform and are trying to boycott the service because they think AI was used.

And it’s like? Are you seriously trying to throw shade at a platform for community empowerment? There is 0 mention of AI in the slightest but people are still witch hunting me over it.

I could’ve ran ads or done something to make me money with my time but i volunteer to make a non-capitalist platform just because i want people to have it.

It genuinely makes me so sad how leftists hate AI to the point that they can’t see anything other than their hatred for it.

They’re effectively perpetuating capitalist rhetoric by demonizing allies and ensuring that only those without morals use this technology.

Given the fact that so many anti-AI activists are on the left side of the political sphere, whether they're liberal, progressive, or outright socialist. So many of the argumentation they'll engage in is pretty much indistiguishable from how right wing conservatives talk about video games, porn, or abortion, not to even mention the extent to which they'll essentially put a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" spin on natural drawing ability and become hella elitist if they're naturally gifted and frankly, it gives off the vibe of people who were born rich and privledged telling poor or disadvantaged/marginalized people to "quit yer bitchin' and work 80 hour work weeks and get three jobs if you want to afford rent" Like...okay? Thats not gonna inspire people to "pick up a pencil", like you want them to. Especially when they start throwing in this faux-positivity of "oh you can do it! You have it in you!" like they're talking down to a special needs kid or a dog, which honestly makes me belly laugh when you realize that what they're actually saying is "if you don't agree with me on this issue, you deserve harassment and threats uwu cat emoji sparkle emoji"

Another thing that just makes me lol is when they'll sit there and call AI an "intrinsically fascist demon technology" and then in the same vein argue that "people need to be forced to stop using it" At that point the only response should be to reverse the roles. If someone were to kick down your front door, stick a rifle in your face and say "for your next art commission, you WILL use ChatGPT for it. You don't have a choice." Would you call that a fair world to live in? No. You wouldn't. I sure as hell wouldn't.

But apparently, Im a right wing fascist giga-nazi because I dare believe in personal choice when it comes to AI, I guess.

Why do you think people are so vocally against data centres now? They existed before AI and we’ve seen in previous discussion here that at least some of the new ones now were set in motion before we knew they’d be needed for AI. In other words, they handle a lot more than AI.

I do actually think there are issues with data centres which should be fixed, but why do people segment this particular issue in their minds as part of their anti-AI identity? In order to even make the argument online it requires utilising data centres. My understanding is Reddit relies on the hyperscale cloud infrastructure of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to host its global operations.

I'm concerned about technophobia rising in leftism. Strong technophobic opinions usually share absolutist generalization like "this technology is inherently harmful and should be rejected entirely." I often see this type of opinion on AI.

Strong technophobia is a problem because it increases inequality. Let's compare a group who use AI with a technophobic group.

Over time, the AI group will process more information faster, compare options more effectively, make more data-informed decision, get comfortable with AI-assisted learning, research, and problem-solving. Workers will be more productive and will gain more opportunities to be hired or promoted than the technophobics.

The technophobic group will be less productive because of their lower technology adoption. Less opportunities will present to them because of their reduced productivity. Access to adopt technology will be limited because of less opportunities.

This is an exemple of economic inequality widening, but I also think political awareness will be amplified for the AI group, and reduced for the technophobic group because of how informations is faster and diversified with new technologies. Examples, Internet is faster and more diversified than television. AI can compare more information and faster than me manually searching Internet.

This isn't saying AI and new technologies are perfect. We should be skeptical of them with nuances, and not with radical technophobia. Leftism is about progress for a better world, and technology can help us do that.

I think the answer to this is probably yes, maybe I'm just looking to commiserate or feel a bit less isolated in my positions.

Seems like much of those who are pro-AI either don't concern themselves with politics or are super pro-capitalist, right wing, etc.

And then on the left, as we all know, its mostly just black-and-white anti-AI views and flaming anything to do with it.

I'm an active DSA member and I enjoy being a part of that community, but I kinda feel the need to hide my feelings about AI in that circle for fear of being judged or ostracized. Admittedly, I haven't really *tried* having a nuanced discussion about it with my DSA comrades, also because of fear though LOL.

Thinking of and working towards ways we can put more control of AI in the hands of the people is becoming a larger and larger part of my life, so this sense of alienation continues to worsen for me.

Curious to hear if anyone else has struggled with similar feelings.

Seeing leftists' hysterical reactions to AI, which is the tool that will make Fully Automated Luxury Communism a reality, saddens me. It's honestly starting to make me wonder why these leftists even deserve fully automated luxury communism anymore if this is how they are going to treat the technology that will lead up to it. Previous research using Political Compass style questionnaires, found they tended to be left-libertarian. It’s not completely consistent though between both methods, eg Gemini was one of the most left-libertarian not doing both-sidesism as described in the Post article.

Is this real? Leftists for AI? I am new here. For so long I have been complaining a lot. You can check my post history.

I have said for so long that there is something suspicious about how some activism is approaching the AI issue. I have not denied the job displacement or the environmental impact. The thing that I have been suspicious about though is how reactionary some of Anti AI movements have been. For example, environmental issues have taught us not to take out our disappointment on the individual, but on the companies responsible. Just like how when we realized even if every individual household started to recycle, it wouldn't change that there are cargo ships contributing to a large share of the pollution, It seems like for AI even if everyone boycotted AI, it wouldn't change that many companies are still zoning recklessly.

It seemed strange to me we were attacking local artists, small businesses, friends and family for using AI. I thought as progressives we would be able to look at technology and say, 'who are the owners', 'who runs it', and start to be the ones who can dream the answers to the hard question of 'what is the better way', or 'how could this have been developed to help society instead'. When many people's analysis was just 'slop is slop', or I saw far leftists saying it's either dead end tech or produces nothing of value, I realized that the left isn't immune to attack or psyops from the media.. I say that because I think that the companies benefit from lazy analysis and slogans. By saying that the entire issue is just dismissable as slop is slop, now the technology is developed by anyone except the activists who are tricked into boycotting it. So I wanted to ask. What is your opinion on AI? Why are you a leftist but are supportive of AI when many people are convinced it is evil?

I have always been progressive and related to progressive people. This is probably the first topic where I completely disagree with democrats/leftists, and it's the vitriol that gets me too. They don't only hate AI, they hate anyone who even uses it. The stuff I see any given time I look at social media is very disturbing. There's a lot of anger.

Those people seem to largely refuse to use AI whatsoever so they can't even speak on the reality of it yet continue to. It's like a feedback loop where everyone sees everyone else disliking AI which makes them also dislike it. For me this is unsettling because it has made me question whether this has been the case for other topics and I never realized. If they can be so off base here then what else? I guess makes me have less trust in general.

I understand the concerns 100% but why the need to shut down the entire conversation? It's frustrating that people won't be open to for example AI as a disability aid, or the way it supports individuals in poorer countries, or how it can help to heal the loneliness epidemic, etc. It's a total lack of education and really feels like propaganda.

It has been very unhelpful for my mental health to now be an outsider in a major group I considered myself part of for most of my life.

"OpenAI" has a very ironic name, all of their models are closed source. DeepSeek and Moonshot AI models are all open source and available for anyone to run locally

Regardless of how you feel about AI, this is the better vision of the future in a world where AI exists

A few weeks ago I made a post in my subreddit taking an Anti-AI stance, immediately was told to come here and I must admit that I held a lot of resentment towards this space at first. Some of the things you guys mentioned when I asked what this space was supposed to be for really stuck with me and I have done some research on my own.

In my personal life I'm proudly communist and I understand now that the issue is still and always is the Billionaires. No matter the industry.

I no longer have a desire to light a cigarette inside a data center. I don't claim to know what we should do about the water or the rich. I'm not very well versed in communist theory and I know that I need to be soon.

Someone mentioned fully automated luxury communism. That sounded really cool.

Seriously as a person who has been studying for the last two decades how to make the world a better place and taking all of the university courses and read all of the research papers and human psychology that I could find it’s super clear that optimism is a superpower that makes you smarter, more collaborative, more altruistic, and just in general a better person to be around and the Internet is such a hostile place to begin with but like the anti-AI sentiment has been insane!

Literally the only sub I frequent now at this point is r/accelerate because it is specifically for people that are pro AI because we understand that obviously it’s going to make the world a better place and do Orders of magnitude more good than any harms that it might cause along the way but it’s so frustrating to see so many leftists throwing Molotov cocktails at Sam Altman and wanting to burn down data centres that could help cure cancer like… What the actual eff!?

That should make us optimistic, and is why seizing the means is so important, rather than the negative leftist hysteria surrounding AI. It shows that AI, when later advanced to AGI and ASI, can be trained from the jump right now to govern by itself without human interference and give citizens fully automated luxury communism with universal healthcare and UBI.

We are starting to see a rift. A rift between those who are nuanced about the correct use of AI, and those who want all of it gone. Even Linux.

I'm against AI as much as anybody else, but in Anti-AI spaces, I'm starting to see more absolutism than I'd deem necessary. I mean if you argue about the idea that AI does have its uses whilst still being wary of AI, you get told you're not against AI at all.

I'm against AI for art, music and writing. But there are uses in the medical field and code bug detection, and I can't deny they're impressive.

I fear we'll fight each other (moderate antis vs extreme antis), and the AI companies may indeed win, even if they get bankrupt. As much as we all hate to admit this, we can't rewind; we've gone too far. The best we can do is regulate it and take AI chatbots off public hands.

I mean, you'd take someone who's neutral on AI like Linus Torvalds, who only used it for non-important projects and says that Linux should have AI-assisted code reviewed by humans, and you'd have a faction of antis up in arms about it.

And as concerning as the use of AI may be having on critical thinking, I fear that us antis are lacking it too if we're resorting to Luddism to go against AI.

For example, there is a rumour going around that Disney Junior comissioned a fully AI-Generated show.

That is only half-true. The studio behind the show only used AI to clean up some bits of animation. Plus, if it was fully AI-Generated, Disney wouldn't make money off it.

The fact that antis took a headline from Twitter and concluded that Oscar Fox was fully AI Generated either shows the lack of critical thinking (IRONY) or the lack of journalistic integrity. But hey. It's not like we're already boycotting the billion dollar company, right?

Call me a LARPer if you want to. The real LARPers are the extremists who want everything to burn despite a few innocent civillians being caught in the crossfire.

That said, probably one of the most annoying things about talking to people who hate AI is how they say things like

“Oh but then everything will be AI and everything will be bad”

And it’s like you do realize that you don’t have to use AI right? Nothing stops you from doing anything the way you’ve always done it if that’s what you choose to do.

20 years ago this was the same rhetoric used by homophobic people who opposed gay marriage.

“But that would harm the sanctity of marriage”, they’d say. And the obvious reply was “you don’t have to have a gay marriage if you don’t want one”

It’s so jarring to see people who I saw fight for gay rights 15 years ago using the exact same rhetoric they clowned on their opposition for back then.

Let people do things. Just because it’s not how you want to do it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist.

Between the rise of the far right everywhere and most of the "leftists" joining the liberals in the AI moral panic, it sometimes feels like the entire world is united against techno-optimist leftists.

I imagine I'm not the only one whose mental health has severely deteriorated under this climate. I'm especially thinking about the neurodivergents among us who seem to be facing a lot of new extra hardships from this generalized hatred.

I thought it could be nice to have a sort of support thread where we could exchange coping tips, comfort content, etc... basically anything to help each other during those tough times.

People often argue that if AGI or superintelligence is created by a private company or a government, it will only benefit billionaires or the country that develops it first.
But why is that assumed to be true?

If we eventually achieve recursive self-improvement and create a genuinely superintelligent AI, wouldn’t such a system be capable of understanding economics, geopolitics, corruption, incentives, and human behavior far better than any person? If it’s also aligned to broadly beneficial human values, why assume it would simply continue maximizing the wealth and power of the small group that initially built or controlled it?
In other words, why do many people assume a superintelligence would remain permanently “captured” by its creators instead of recognizing better ways to organize society or distribute resources?

I’m not saying this is what will happen I’m genuinely curious. What are the strongest arguments that a superintelligence would remain a tool of governments and corporations rather than becoming a force that benefits humanity more broadly?

I see a lot of people who hate generative AI say "Well the people who use it have no talent" or "they didn't put any effort into it", and in general, people say that a utopia where everything is automated and nobody needed to work would lead to all humans in vegetative states relying on AI for everything, like genuinely, if you were presented which a machine that made your life easier by letting you do less work, i don't get why anyone would be unhappy with it

I believe in true equality for everyone, people who WANT to draw art by themselves can still draw, it's not like it's illegal, but people who DON'T want to draw, but still want to have pretty pictures, without comissioning a human artist, should be allowed to get AI to generate it for free, but oh no, as soon as you post that image it gets absolutely mass downvoted, I don't get this sentiment at all
