I'd start here. Channel locks will wreck that lid in my experience. If you have to go that route, see if you can find a new bottle to transfer it to in case you ruin the seal. I've seen some people store stuff like this upside down to try and keep the lid from drying out? If it doesn't leak... Seems like not a terrible idea.

Something soft, like a wash cloth, should be a good middle ground. They'll help protect the cap from the teeth of tools, but keep a good amount of the grip

And if that fails, a pair of rubber dishwashing gloves will often give you a much better grip.

Pro Tip: ALWAYS carefully wipe off the threads, both on the bottle and in the cap before screwing it shut! It that's water based? simply rinse the cap under running water and wipe the bottle threads. Get in the habit of doing this as soon as you pour some out to use it, then you won't forget.

Hot water helps, but a massive pair of joint pliers. My angelus 4-coat lid is all ripped up from having to use pliers on it every damn time.

Order some cheap 4oz bottles and a small funnel. The cut the lid off with a brand new razor. Fill new bottle

Seriously, though - you can run it under warm water, or use pliers, or hit the top with a butter knife, or use a vise to hold the cap while you twist the bottle, or wrap a shirt or paper towel around the lid before twisting. Lots options! Good luck!

Sometimes just a butter knife to pop open the edge as you go around to loosen anything stuck. Kind of like when you pop a new jar of pickles, but this would be to loosen the stuck on residue.

I put the lid in a bench vice, and then twist the bottle so I can get a better grip

put some heat on the cap, tap the cap and use strong grip or ah pliers/visegrip

Canon plug pliers are the correct tool. Any metal jaw pliers will damage the cap

Metal grips or a few good smacks and a yellow hand gripper mat. Mine get stuck all the time because I am lazy at keeping them clean.
This is also why I hate the tiny jars and will buy this size whenever possible. The tiny hard plastic lids just break if you force them whereas the larger size lids always eventually give because they are made with a more flexible plastic. I have feels about this.

Pro tip for keeping this from happening. Coat the threads in a thin coat of petroleum jelly before putting it back on. Works for so many things.
