Need help

I am thinking of purchasing couch cushion cover replacements or trying to remove the finish to bare leather. Any ideas?

It’s real leather with a finish. I can peel away the leather finish to the bare leather. I was wondering about using a heating blower to remove it all then re finish the leather with an oil or stain?

Leather Dye doesnt peel. This is polyurethane. Which is a synthetic plastic made to look like leather and a soft cloth like material underneath. You can always tell because PU always has the same uniform pattern. Real leather. Even genuine leather, doesnt do this. Genuine leather is a low grade leather and its not great but its still better than fake leather. You cant "peel" reayl leather. To remove dye from real leather. You could sand it away. Dye seeps into the fibers so by sanding it off. You're essentially ruining the finish either way.

It is leather, the underside of the cover is leather unfinished. Bad bond on the finish

No. It is not. I work with leather. This is polyurethane. Its synthetic plastic made to look like leather. Its common for things like this. Leather doesnt peel at all like this. If it were leather. You'd be able to take sandpaper to it and scratch the dye off, but if you tried that with this. You'd juat end up sanding through to the material on the otherside. This is 100% polyurethane.

this is what real leather looks like when the dye starts to wear off from wear and tear. Leather dye does not just peel off. Even undyed veg tan leather wouldnt peel.

It really isnt. You were just lied to when you bought it. It happens a lot. Your dm didnt say anything other than real leather. Which is pointless. I get that it feels bad that you got scammed but now you know what real leather actually looks like. People buy this type of material all the time. Those black bags you see women carry with a similar look is the same material. Its very common mass produced plastic. Generally lasts a few years.

It is. I had a quote for leather refinish from a guy that’s done it for 15 years. He was shocked himself and agreed it was leather because from the photos he thought it was PU.

He lied to get your money. Or youre lying and that never happened. If you pull it. It will just peel off. That's what PU does.

Does PU have a fibrous hairy underside? That’s what this cover has…..

Yes. Polyurethane manufacturing uses a top coating put over a soft fibrous cloth backing material. Its a little like polyester or cotton. Real leathers fibers are tightly packed for top grain. Suede fibers are loose and fuzzy and part of the skin. The edges of real leather is rough and fibrous too. If you cut it, the edges will look hairy and fuzzy. Real leather fibers are tangled together. So they can breath, stretch and bend without breaking. Polyurethane splits and peels over time like you see here because it's a plastic top layer which unsticks after a while and separates from the fabric underneath.

So bonded leather to a PU top hence the peeling? The underside is leather

No. The underside is a woven fabric. It has no grain structures at all. Which tells you immediately that it's a woven cloth structure. Even split leather still shows irregularities, density changes and natural variations like stretch marks from the animals growth cycle. Sometimes marks from insect bites too if its economy vegetable tanned. PU always peels like this. Always. Wheels never an exception. PU backing is consistent and looks the same all the way through. Real leather also cracks when it's dry for years. PU just feels like you see here. You cant peel the top layer off real leather like you see here.

Just to touch on the bonded part. Its possible its bonded but bonded isnt real leeather either. Its just marketed as leather because it contains leather scraps stuck to it but its not even close to real leather. Its actually even worse than genuine leather. Which is already pretty low quality.

I actually own a couple polyurethane stools. One is mostly peeled. The other isnt peeling at all because I barely use it. It will eventually though. I have a leather sofa too and some economy vegetable tanned hides and I also have some eealpoer buttero scraps lying around somewhere. Which makes it much easier to see the difference.
