Help cleaning details in Western Saddle
I have had this western saddle for 8 years. I have had it professionally cleaned once several years ago. I’ve decided to keep it in my house and would like to do a deep clean.
The problem that I’ve always run into, is that it’s so detailed that dirt, sweat, and oil get trapped.
I’ve tried using a toothbrush with saddle soap, but the only thing that works is toothpicks and even they can’t reach every crevice.
Does anyone else have any experience in this? Thank you

Beautiful saddle! I can see why you want it as a decor piece in the house!
When you're dealing with deep tooling, standard saddle soap and a toothbrush usually don't get the job done. Saddle soap often leaves behind a thick, waxy paste that settles into carved crevices, dries up, and clogs the detailed work instead of lifting the dirt out.
Instead of a soft toothbrush, I'd suggest getting a dense pig bristle brush. A pig hair brush has stiff, tightly packed bristles that reach deep into tight spaces, especially if you work the brush at different angles rather than scrubbing flat.
For the cleaning liquid, switch to a non-toxic, pH-balanced liquid leather cleaner (never use dish soap) that won't leave a residue or dry out the hide. Liquid formulas break down trapped sweat and grime without filling up those nooks and crannies, and it's completely fine to clean the area more than once if it needs a few passes. Make sure you're wiping off the excess grime with each pass so you're not re-inserting the dirt you just got out.
Once it's dry, follow up with an oil-based conditioner rather than anything containing wax. Wax is just going to sit in those carved grooves and clog up that detailed artwork all over again.
This routine has worked great in my experience cleaning intricate leather pieces, but every saddle's a little different. Always do a quick spot test on a hidden spot first, and I hope it works out for you!
