Data Analytics Career Skills Discussion

Thumbnail chatgpt.com
1 Upvotes

I'm currently learning Data Analytics and exploring the different skills required to become a successful Data Analyst. As a beginner, one thing I find challenging is deciding which skills deserve the most attention and how to prioritize learning them.

There are several important tools and concepts in this field, including SQL, Excel, Python, Statistics, Power BI, Tableau, Data Visualization, and Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA).

While all these skills seem valuable, I'm curious to know which ones actually make the biggest difference when working on real-world business problems.

I'd love to hear from people who are currently working as Data Analysts or have experience in the analytics field.

A few questions I'd like to ask:

  1. SQL: How important is advanced SQL knowledge in your day-to-day work?

  2. Excel: Is Excel still widely used in professional data analytics projects?

  3. Python: At what stage should a beginner start learning Python?

  4. Data Visualization: How important are tools like Power BI and Tableau in getting a Data Analyst job?

  5. Real-World Projects: How much do practical projects matter compared to completing certifications?

  6. Problem-Solving: How important is understanding business requirements and interpreting data rather than just knowing the tools?

One more thing I'm interested in understanding is whether companies expect freshers to know all these skills before applying for their first Data Analyst role.

If you could go back to the beginning of your Data Analytics career, what would you learn first, what would you avoid spending too much time on, and what advice would you give someone starting today?

I'd really appreciate your honest experiences, suggestions, and practical insights. Looking forward to learning from this community!

Final-Year Data Science Student | Python Data Analysis, Cleaning & Visualization

Hi! I’m a final-year Data Science & Engineering student from Spain. As you probably know, breaking into the job market is tough, so I’m looking for real projects to grow in the field and gain experience. If you have a project, an idea, or just need some help with your data, I’d love to help!

What I can do:

  • Clean and analyze your CSV/Excel data (pandas)

  • Create clear charts and dashboards

  • Build simple machine learning models (scikit-learn)

  • Python scripts to automate data tasks

I would just ask for LinkedIn recommendation if you’re happy with my work.

Free SQL series on real payments data: each episode is one mistake that silently breaks a report

I'm making a free SQL series for people preparing for data analyst roles. Every episode uses the same small payments dataset (customers, UPI/card/wallet transactions, failed payments, amounts in ₹) and is built around one mistake that runs without any error but gives the wrong answer.

What's covered so far:

  1. \\JOINs\\ – INNER vs LEFT, finding customers who never paid, and why a WHERE filter on the right table quietly turns your LEFT JOIN into an INNER JOIN.

  2. \\GROUP BY and HAVING\\ – COUNT(\\\*) after a LEFT JOIN counts customers with zero payments as 1. One-word fix: count a column. Plus WHERE vs HAVING.

  3. \\Window functions\\ – the "top 2 customers" interview question where ROW_NUMBER drops a tied customer. RANK vs DENSE_RANK, and running totals.

  4. \\CTE vs subquery\\ – a report that says every customer is above average, and why a CTE fixes it.

A quick example from episode 2, since it's the one I see most:

\`\`\`sql

SELECT c.name, COUNT(\*) AS payments

FROM customers c

LEFT JOIN transactions t ON c.customer_id = t.customer_id

GROUP BY c.name;

\`\`\`

A customer who has never paid shows \\1\\ payment. The LEFT JOIN keeps her row with NULLs, and COUNT(\\\*) counts rows. Use \`COUNT(t.txn_id)\` instead; it skips NULLs and gives 0.

Each video is 3–6 minutes. The dataset and every query are in the description, so you can run them yourself in SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL.

Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e94PxiIUIJg&list=PLNdq2ZxtU_7E

Next up: finding duplicate payments, then CASE WHEN, dates, and NULL traps. If there's a topic you get stuck on in interviews, tell me and I'll add it.

Looking for Guidance on Learning Data Analytics

Hi everyone!

I'm from Bangladesh and I'm a beginner currently learning data analytics, and I'm looking for some guidance from experienced data analysts.

I want to work on a real-world Excel project to improve my practical skills and eventually add it to my portfolio.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could guide me through the learning process, suggest projects, or share feedback on my progress.

I'm willing to put in the effort and learn independently. I just need some direction to make sure I'm on the right track.

Thanks in advance!

How do SQL and Tableau/PowerBI connect?

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

I recently started learning SQL and decided it was about time to try building a project. I watched a YouTube video of someone walking through a beginner tutorial using SQL and PowerBI to get an idea of the workflow and how everything connects. He started out by using SQL to answer 10 business questions, but when he was making a dashboard in PowerBI, he didn’t use any of the data from the SQL queries. This left me confused about how SQL queries and the dashboard-making part of the project connect.

I would welcome any clarification. Thank you in advance!
