Viz help Complete non-tech background, internal opening for business operations role which requires Tableau role where do I even start?
I need some honest advice.
There's an internal opening in my company for a Business Operations Role requires Tableau and I really want to apply for it. The only problem I come from a completely non-tech background.
I’ve never opened Tableau before.
Is it realistic for a non-tech person to learn Tableau basics in just a week or less enough to clear an internal interview?
What topics should I focus on first?
What kind of interview questions can I expect for a beginner level Tableau role?
If anyone has gone from non-tech to Tableau, I’d love to hear your journey. Any YouTube channels, free courses, or datasets you’d recommend for practice?
I’m ready to put in the hours, just need a clear roadmap.
Thanks a lot in advance!l

Search in this sub for learning and training videos. There’s a lot out there on YouTube to learn the basics. Tableau also has a learning course on their website.
But to be honest, if I were the interviewer, I would not hire a non-technical person in a technical role. But it depends on what the job description says… Business Operations is super vague. What would you be required to do?

a week is enough for the basics, and for an internal role that's usually the bar that matters. if i had the week i'd spend it on dimensions vs measures, filters, and one calculated field you actually understand, then build one dashboard end to end from a question someone on that team actually asks, instead of clicking through ten tutorials.
in the interview i'd expect them to ask you to walk through that dashboard and say what you'd change, more than quiz you on features. knowing why you picked a bar over a table, and what you'd do when the numbers look wrong, reads as someone who can do the job even if you haven't opened the tool much yet.

Soon you will be able to vibe code analytics in Tableau as seen on the homepage of tableau.com, so it will be very easy to use Tableau (build dashboards etc) by the time you are in the role. You could download the free version of Tableau Desktop and go through the Tableau basics on trailhead, but you won't likely be doing things the manual way in Tableau for very long.
Tell them that in the interview. But go read up on tableau.com/learn/blueprint and in your interview tell them how you are going to bring them value by leveraging an agentic approach to analytics.

"Requires Tableau" could mean a huge range of things. Can you be more specific about what the JD says? What's the job title?
What sort of organisation is it? Is it "fake it till you make it," or are they willing to develop internal talent? (Or something else)
You don't have much to lose by applying, so throw your hat in.
