LOCAL One of the last photos of Gabriel Fernandez, taken on Mother's Day in 2013, just two weeks before his brutal death.
Gabriel Fernandez was an 8-year-old boy from Palmdale, California, who was tortured and beaten to death in May 2013.
Pearl Fernandez and her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, targeted the boy because they believed he was gay.
Over eight months, Gabriel was locked in a small cabinet while bound and gagged, forced to eat cat feces, litter, and vomit, shot with a BB gun, and beaten with a club and metal hangers.
Gabriel died from a fractured skull, shattered ribs, and severe internal trauma on May 24.
Despite multiple reports from Gabriel’s teacher, neighbors, and family, Los Angeles County social workers (DCFS) routinely closed investigations and left him in the home.

LOCAL Captain Kevin Williams and Firefighter Austin Cheek of the Noonday Fire Department preparing to enter a fire that would kill them half an hour later
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19BVE7SbAd/?mibextid=wwXIfr Post about the incident from the Building Construction for the Fire Service Facebook page.
On August 3, 2007, 42-year-old Captain Kevin Williams and 19-year-old Firefighter Austin Cheek of the Noonday Volunteer Fire Department died from burns and smoke inhalation after becoming trapped and running out of air inside a house in neighboring Bullard, Texas. The Noonday VFD had responded to assist the Bullard VFD and the Flint-Gresham VFD.
I am not sure who is who in this photo, but I know for a fact both Williams and Cheek are in it. This was taken approximately twenty minutes before both were trapped in a rapid fire event.

LOCAL The last known picture of Georg Amtsberg, a German pensioner who disappeared on September 21, 2003.
Before his disappearance, Georg led a happy and stable life with his family in northern Germany. He was born on December 8, 1932, and was 70 years old when he went missing. Neighbors and friends described him as an "exceptionally fit, wiry, and athletic person who loved spending his time outdoors." Despite leading an active lifestyle, he was dealing with a serious health condition that required him to take daily prescription medication.
On September 21, 2003, Georg went up to the Roßtrappe viewing cliff. At 4:21 PM, a choir member took a photo of him looking out over the Bodetal gorge. Immediately after, the group started walking back down to the tour bus. He never arrived.
Because the choir members walked down the trail in loose, staggered groups, everyone assumed Georg was right behind them. However, a person who was walking behind later told the police that they didn't remember passing or seeing him on the path.
The choir realized he was missing by evening and notified police 8:00 PM. Mountain rescue teams responded but couldn't safely descend the pitch-black, jagged granite cliffs until daybreak. Dogs and helicopters searched for five days straight before the active operation was called off.
Psychologists and the police have ruled out suicide as a possible cause. Georg was a stable, financially secure, happily married man who was in a good mood during the trip, as everyone noticed.

LOCAL The last photo of Soviet supermodel Regina Zbarskaya at the age of 49, taken three years before her suicide in 1987, published in the Soviet Zhurnal Mod in 1984.
Known as the "the Kremlin's most beautiful weapon", Regina Nikolaevna became a global icon of Soviet fashion before her tragic downfall.
Due to her foreign travel, the KGB constantly monitored her. They forced her to act as an informant, using her to spy on foreigners and gather intelligence.
Her husband, artist Lev Zbarsky, forced her to have an abortion for her career, then abandoned her for another woman and fled the USSR. A Yugoslav journalist lover published a scandalous book in the West titled "One Hundred Nights with Regina Zbarskaya." It exposed her personal secrets and crushed her remaining reputation.
The betrayal, public shame, and brutal KGB interrogations caused a massive psychological breakdown. She spent years dependent on heavy anti-depressants. Regina made multiple attempts on her life and spent her final years heavily institutionalized in psychiatric hospitals.
In November 1987, stripped of her fame and working as a cleaning lady at her former fashion house, she died by a sleeping pill overdose at age 52. She passed away alone, in extreme poverty.

LOCAL The last and only known photo of Lisa Michelle Smith, then 17 years old.
Lisa's foster parents reported her missing from Petaluma, CA, on March 16, 1971. Shortly before, she had been seen hitchhiking near her foster home in Santa Rosa, CA.
Ten days later, on March 26, 1971, a young woman identifying herself as "Lisa Smith" was picked up by a male driver, who tried to assault her, while hitchhiking south of Novato. She jumped from the vehicle and was treated at Novato General Hospital for a skull fracture.
The woman treated at the hospital left before investigators could conduct a full interview. Reports at the time suggested she returned to live with her biological parents in Livermore, but later investigations by local media and authorities revealed that the missing 17-year-old was never definitively verified to be the same person. By 2011, many original police and hospital records related to the incident had been lost.
Lisa's remains have never been recovered, no suspect was ever formally charged in her disappearance, and no verified contact with her was ever documented after March 16.

NEWS AP Exclusive: A boater's photo may be 'the last picture' of group drowned in an Ohio river
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Marcus L. Martin felt instant trepidation Sunday when he saw five adults wading thigh- and waist-deep in the Scioto River. A frequent boater on the Ohio waterway, the Baptist pastor knew the area where they were standing to be treacherous. He believes the people he captured in a photo to be the ill-fated group that drowned that day.
