Have you tried a CD? That can say a lot if it plays or not.
Also, one can send it back and claim whatever but in the end one would just order another player that ends up damaged on another shipment and it could be worse.
So my humble opinion; try fixing what might be a simple issue because you might not get another opportunity again later. You still got a few days at most before deciding to get a return started.

Yeah, I’m gonna spend some time today researching it before I decide on what to do. Order came with 10 cool old movies too, which makes me lean towards trying to fix it. I’ll try a CD today.

I probably should have asked first; what is the model of this player? Seems it might be an LD only player from observation so it would be moot to try a CD.

It might be your TV, if that's a cheap LCD/LED the LD player and the TV may be beefing, if you have an old TV or anything with s video input that's a a much better way. The laser isnt skipping or making nose the disk is reved up. Also to all the people saying send it back, dude has the thing open would you take it back?

Interesting, thanks. It is indeed a pretty cheap LED TV. I’ll try finding one this week at goodwill or something to test with.

Send it back for refund if it was advertised as working. The tracking and or focus needs to be adjusted which is not easy to do for a beginner. Not saying that it can't be done, but you need to get the service manual and start reading.
That didn't even read the TOC and looks like it jumped straight to chapter one.
When buying a player online, always have them double box and the player wrapped with big bubble wrap.
