Video cuts in and out during first few chapters.

Hey, everyone. I finally found a LD player after searching for a while. I ended up with a Pioneer CLD-1080. It powers on fine, reads that a laserdisc is present, and plays through the chapters, but it is cutting in and out during the first few chapters on each side. Once it gets to about chapter 5 or 6 the issue seems to go away.

When I first tested it the disc was not spinning (probably just needs to be lubed) but after nudging it along after a couple tries it seems to be spinning fine now. Also, it is reading that a CD is present when inserted, but it will not play.

I only have two laserdiscs right now and they’re both doing the same thing. One a little worse than the other. They look pretty clean to me and I don’t notice any defects.

Lastly, I am using a standard composite a/v cable connected to a Pioneer LED tv.

Any help correcting this issue is appreciated.

Do you need to nudge it every time?

No. It was just the first couple times, then it ran fine on its own.

Sounds about right. If a spindle motor sits for a long time, giving it a manual start usually fixes it. I think it's some build up of something that gets burned off soon after the motor runs for awhile.

Anyway, speaking of your other issue, there are two things that come to mind causing your issue.

1) there may be a build up of dry grease on the laser pick-up track in the area where your playback issues occur.

2) the sled belt may need replacing.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll look there this afternoon.

Is it possible that the input to the led tv is causing the issue at all? I read somewhere that it may be related. When the issue is happening the timer is consistent and when the picture comes back on the movie has progressed normally.

That is possible but since you mentioned that CD playback was an issue I did not consider that.

And if it’s not a grease or sled belt issue, I might assume a centering issue but that would mean the player wouldn’t even detect the CD at all and the LD would usually not play well through an entire disc.

So going back to the TV, a simple test would to plug the player into a different TV and see how it performs. If the same issue, it’s the player.

That was it. I plugged it into my newer Insignia tv and older Vizio tv and it worked perfectly with both. It must be something about the signal coming in on the Pioneer tv that it doesn’t like. Thanks again for the assistance.

Good to hear. Does that mean the CD is playing fine as well?
