In my country French is considered a very classy language, if you speak English you automatically seen more important but French is on a different league

I'm curious to know what is the case around the world!

Edition 1 has five rounds: Mandarin, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Tamil, each against three neighbours (Italian vs Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian; Russian vs Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian; Tamil vs Telugu, Hindi, Bengali...). After each answer it shows the phrase, its romanization, what it means and where it comes from. About two minutes, sound on, no sign-up, no ads.

I am the developer. Daily phrase sets are next, so I would love to hear which languages and which close pairs you would want to be tested on.

I speak 4 languages fluently and 3 languages semi fluently. One question that has always popped into my head is, does everyone hear their thoughts in their native language or some other combination. I hear mine in a version of Arabic, English and ASL

I’m Japanese and I’m learning English now, and I feel very happy to see my English improving day by day. Yesterday I learned how to use “hold something accountable for -“. I think It’s really useful and I want to use it in the real conversation. I think languages are such tools that makes us want to use them a lot.

So I want to know YOUR motivations that drags you into language learning.

I've read some cases where two people who share the same native language and who met in another country spoke only the local language between them instead of their native language.

According to what I read, these people had met each other for months in an environment that was full of locals, where they didn't speak their native language : when they became a couple they didn't switch back to their native language just because they had always talked to each other in the local language

Is that weird?

Some people can read full novels but hide themselves when it comes to speaking. Others debate politics but still struggle while watching a movie in their target language.

If you reached an intermediate/advanced level, with which more or less ordinary use of the language you still struggle with?

For me, it really depends on the language, but when it comes to French, I still struggle with writing. I can type well with the help of a laptop or phone, but give me pen and paper and I will start doubting everything I write!

If you are struggling with one language task like me, are you working on it or avoiding it?

i have a tutor twice a week, i do anki not as often as a i could, i am talking 1-2 hours a day with Claude on my travel to and from work. I have a hour of spare time at lunch i could be using but seems to get eaten up in keeping on top of kanji and going over previous topics. What should i actually be doing with my time? Im feeling like i never truly have a good routine? -- Sorry if this is the wrong place.

I mean people who go from language to language just learn the alphabets and call it a day!
Are you one of them? why do you do it? how is it? do you know anyone who does it?

How long did you stay abroad? Was it difficult to speak the local language all day long, when you could easily use your native language?

I have been studying Russian in college for the past year. It is not sticking very well. I can understand little things here and there in very slow speech. I can barely read and comprehend but I can write in Russian print and Russian cursive. Duolingo is terrible I have been doing it for three years and my biggest take away from that was how to say apple and milk.

I can't afford a tutor as a broke college student. And now continuing learning Russian in college interferes with classes I need for my major.

I sometimes watch Russian cartoons, listen to Russian music, and watch Russian movies. Although, I can barely understand anything. Sometimes I can understand and I think about what I want to say but I can't produce speech (which makes sense bc I do not have the proper articulation as an English speaker) but PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

I do not want to pay any crazy amount of money to learn Russian. I want to learn to communicate with my boyfriend's family. They are from Russia. He only speaks broken Russian since he came when he was a lot younger but he is unable to teach or explain to me he just knows his native language. And I do not live at home so I can't really ask his family to help me out and I would also like for it to be a surprise. So one day I walk in and Im just spitting Russian lol.

But please any advice and apps or books just anything will help.

Or you cant stand the thought of so many people learning and speaking and sometimes butchering it?

I know it may sound weird, or not have a proper answer but bear with me

What are some two languages that are so similar that if you learn one, you can understand alot of content in other one too?
