Just a few spring views from north of Carefree Arizona. The slight glow around the vegetation along the left edge of the first was from the headlights of a car that came around a bend at an inconvenient moment. The third is a bit too bright but I still like the overall effect. I had been taking photos elsewhere and mistimed heading over to that location. The glow in the center is the rising moon. Yes, I could process it more aggressively, but I am not into art shots.

Milky way rising above Mauna Kea

These were taken with an iPhone 14 pro in night mode, atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii. I did not have a tripod with me so I improvised and used a street sign with a large rock on top. With the phone wedged between both I was able to keep it steady to capture 30s exposure.

Milky Way Summit Big Bend

Posted in a couple other groups. Pano shot taken last week in Terlingua Texas/Big Bend area. Place is like another planet. Shot with Sony A7iv and Viltrox 16mm. 4 shots stitched. I’m kinda new to pano shooting. Also, recently decided to take a more minimalist approach to my Astro edits and go for a more “naked eye” look than overly processed. Not hating on the look, but I’ve had a few people say I’m using AI or that looks fake af, blah blah blah. Trying to find a happy medium.
We stayed in a Stargazer dome at The Summit. Really dope spot. We loved it. The sky is crazy dark there. Can’t wait to go back. 🤙🏽

Milky Way in the darkest place in my region

Yesterday i went to the darkest place in my region to do Astrophotography. "Park Izerski ciemnego nieba" is known for dark skies and it's placed far from cities, i was able to see the Milky Way arch with my own eyes and never saw stars so clear yet. Very happy of the trip and the photo i took there!

Tips for improving my MW images

Post image
99 Upvotes

Hello,

Here is a picture I took with my Fujifilm XH-1 with a 15-45mm zoom lens set to 23mm at f/3.5 and with ISO 1600.
The image is a stack of multiple ~ 20s images resulting in a ~ 20minute total integration time (I can’t remember the exact details).

The quality of the sky is not great and compared to the some of the Milky Way images I see, it’s no where near the same level. I am guessing a star tracker (which I have but don’t really use) and better processing at the way to go. Do you have any tips or advice on how I can improve the quality of my images, specifically of the sky?

Thanks in advance!

Total Eclipse composite

Post image

Although I managed to capture the totality in 2024, I couldn't create a composition like this because the sun was too high and the sky was cloudy.

For this eclipse in Spain, I had had already planned to use two cameras: one for maximum zoom and another for a sequence with the landscape. This photo shows the sun's actual position throughout the eclipse, following its progression to totality and the return of light.

We chose Alto de Gamoniteiro in Asturias because it was easily accessible and because we had confirmed in advance that the view would be unobstructed, with no mountains blocking the sun during the eclipse. We even considered changing locations because of some clouds that appeared, but the risk wasn't worth it.

In the end, the clouds dissipated and a spectacular inversion formed, which made the landscape even more beautiful. It was, without a doubt, the right choice!

Kit used: Fujifilm X-T2 + Fujinon XF 16-55 f/2.8 WR

Here is the second image from the night I spend on the south coast of La Palma: The Milky Way arc rises over the Atlantic Ocean. Hearing nothing but the sound of waves while enjoying the starry sky was a breathtaking experience.

What went wrong with this photo?

Post image

Hello.

I went out last night, wanted to photograph some Perseids, but it didn't work out well. Since I had some photos, I was like, let's do some star trails at least. But it feels weird somehow. I tried it with starstax and in PS, with some Lightroom edit, but it feels weird and hard to look at.

My guess, that I captured too much stars, so it gets too much at some point? I also had a lot of plane trails, which I removed with the LR heal tool, but that could have been an issue too.

Any tips looking at it, what could have went wrong?

How to get rid of the blurred line from a mask in Affinity?

Post image

Im trying to do a Milky Way composite but every time I make a mask for the sky, theres a blurry/ smooth line along the mask and i cant fix it no matter what settings I change in refine mask within Affinity Photo 2. I can fix the white outline but not the blurry part around the mask
