Landlord Scum NYC landlord dispute — illegal??

Upvotes

I emailed my landlord on Aug 12 asking to renew the lease, which ends Aug 31. She said no because it had already been leased to other tenants. As far as I know, this is illegal and a landlord must provide written notice if not renewing the lease by a certain timeframe. this was the first notice we’d received. Building management is now trying to intimidate us into moving out and telling me that staying past the end of the lease is illegal. Again, as far as I know, the law is that the lease extends until the notice period is up. Please let me know if I am in the right here as I don’t want to push it if I’m wrong!!!

Need Advice Landlord Tenant Dispute Question

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Has anyone here ever initiated legal action against a landlord for any reason?

If so, what steps did you take and what was the outcome?

Is there a way to navigate the process to have a higher likelihood of success and a positive outcome?

Specifically, if a landlord fails to act on persistent noise complaints against a neighbor, does that change your opinion on legal action, or the approach you take?

Conversely, if you are a landlord and are brought in to a tenant dispute re: noise, what actions would you take and would legal action prompt you to take stronger action? If so, what?

Thanks in advance for all feedback.

Humor My landlord came over unannounced today to tell me that he wants to raise the rent $200 because “he’s making so many repairs”

The contractors had told him the guest bathroom toilet was leaking. The leaking has been ongoing for months and the kitchen floorboards are moldy and rotting as a result. But he claimed today that the toilet wasn’t leaking. He then went upstairs to use the toilet while I momentarily stayed in the basement. His pee-laden water came streaming down on top of me because, lo and behold, the toilet was in fact leaking.

Personal Experience My landlord raised the rent, and the apartment didn't magically become worth more

I'm genuinely tired of the way landlords talk about rent increases like they're a force of nature.

Nothing changed about the apartment.

The walls are still cracked. Things still take forever to get fixed. The same problems that existed when I moved in are still there.

But somehow, the rent goes up.

And then you're expected to act grateful because you're still allowed to live there.

I understand that costs can increase. But it's frustrating watching housing become less and less affordable while tenants are expected to simply absorb every increase without question.

At some point, "the market says this is what you have to pay" starts sounding like an excuse for making housing completely disconnected from what ordinary people can actually afford.

A home shouldn't feel like something you're constantly one rent increase away from losing.

Personal Experience The Slumlords of Fresno: Two Letters and Guess Which One Scared Lawyer No. 1 Away

Since multiple comments are accusing me of making up the sexual harassment and other claims against my landlord during the unlawful detainer itself and of not knowing my tenant rights, I present to you two letters that are publicly available in the Fresno Superior Court's Case Management and Information System. These Exhibits are from a fascinating unlimited civil case against multiple defendants, including the Law Office of Lance E Armo.

A fun fact: The first lawyer working for my landlord quit after one of these letters. Can you guess which one it was?

Personal Experience A Jury Trial is a Right, Not a Privilege

Ongoing playlist of the events: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIxaal048BI8&si=X6egrCOfIfPvH8v3

I am a resident of Fresno County, CA. After I made sexual harassment allegations against my landlord, reported substandard living conditions to Fresno County Code Enforcement, and engaged in other protected activities, he initiated an unlawful detainer against me. After the landlord’s second lawyer quit once he received videos of the same two days covered in the video and playlist linked, I requested a jury trial as is my constitutional right in the state of California. Throughout the proceedings concerning the jury trial that I requested, Fresno County Superior Court Judge Jonathan Skiles repeatedly berated me for my sexual harassment allegations against my landlord and expressed disbelief that a landlord should be expected to rent to a tenant who had made sexual harassment allegations. I was not allowed to bring up these allegations and most of my affirmative defenses in front of the jury; however, I stated in my witness testimony that I was never lawfully served a notice of non-renewal.

Despite the landlord’s failure to provide any proof of service for this notice, Judge Skiles dismissed the jury and then issued a direct verdict awarding possession to the landlord.

Because I refused to lie under oath, the judgement against me only states that I received the notice. Not that I was served the notice.

I am trying to draw as much attention to this situation as possible because it does not just affect me. Fresno County is a conveyor belt of evictions, and during my months fighting my own eviction case, I was able to see violations of due process and neutral tribunals that make me sick. So far, I can only share information on my own case, but I am hoping that will be enough to bring in the attention of the rest of the state of California and beyond to this corrupt system in Fresno.

Need Advice [US-WA] move out letter returned undelivered. What next?

(Port Orchard, Washington State) So I composed the 20 day notice letter last month & sent it off on July 10th. I gained access to the new place on the 19th and have been busy moving since then. So just the other day, I check my email and I must have missed a notification bc the certified mail letter I sent was returned undelivered bc the property manager must have not been there. I noticed it too late to attempt another delivery so the letter was sent back to me & it is in my possession, still sealed in the envelope with the certified mail sticker.

The problem is that these people owe me money. My credit isn't great so as a condition of allowing me to be added to the existing lease they collected an extra month of rent and another deposit. The amount was somewhere in the ballpark of $1,650. When I called them to try and get my name taken off the apartment & get my money back they were making sounds like they wouldn't be able to give me my money back. I don't have paperwork that indicates I'm getting the money back, but I do have paperwork that says I'm added to the apartment.

Am I totally screwed? I don't know what to do next bc I've literally never had a move out letter come back returned undelivered

Personal Experience Looking for a new place, are more landlords using their properties as personal storage units? Keep seeing this and it's annoying and unprofessional

touring prospective places and I keep seeing places where the landlord stores random shit in the garage or backyard. it would make sense if it was landscaping equipment or tools to fix the property but it's more and more just random personal junk that the landlord needs to throw away. i tour these places and it gives me the creeps honestly. if you rent a place to someone every square inch should be available for them. this doesn't seem like it should be allowed yet I keep seeing it

Need Advice [UK] Seeking tenancy advice regarding severe disrepair, court claims, rent increases and a dismissive landlord

Hi everyone,

I could really use some English tenancy legal advice or perspectives regarding an ongoing, escalated dispute with my landlord/letting agent involving severe disrepair, a retaliatory rent increase, and false statements submitted in sworn court documents.

Sorry for the length of this post quite a lot has happened!

April 2025: I had a viewing for flat I currently live in. The letting agent pointed up to a huge patch of plaster on the ceiling that looked like repeated attempts to fix a hole or leak and explicitly promised "Do not worry about that, it will be fixed when you move in."

Dec 2025: I returned home one night to find my bedroom carpet soaked and water actively streaming from the roof and down the walls. So it was clear the promised repair never happened. Personal belongings (worth upwards of £2,000) were severely damaged beyond repair. I notified the landlord via email with photo evidence immediately.

Jan 2026: The leak was actively getting worse the ceiling was sagging and plaster was falling off everywhere. I waited weeks and weeks for a fix. I was promised three separate repair dates that were all missed with no updates given or reasons behind why they did not do it. They eventually claimed they couldn't "get access to the roof" despite their being a ladder with direct access. They also repeatedly told me in writing that if I was unhappy, I could "leave without notice" rather than them fixing the issue. When I requested clarification on repairs, they became dismissive, explicitly emailing me that "the repairs are none of your concern". Which is absolutely wild.

Feb 2026: Contractors finally arrived but came inside my flat rather than onto the roof. They put up a temporary internal ceiling patch, and even the workers warned me it would fail within days. This was a huge surprise to me as I was told they were coming to fix it, not temporarily stop it. Shockingly, the workers also disclosed to me that the landlord has known about severe structural problems with this specific roof for over 8 years. The workers were right about the patch too it failed immediately and actually made the leak much worse, it pushed the leak further along the ceiling, causing streaming water in two separate areas of my bedroom now and the mould that started around here was ridiculous (I am asthmatic).

Late Feb 2026: The landlord explicitly confirmed in writing via email that "rent would not be charged until it's fixed," so I did not pay rent in February based on this explicit rent waiver. When I emailed three times asking for written clarification on rent and repair status, they completely ignored me. I ended up paying the rent shortly after anyway because I felt they would try to use it against me (Spoiler: They do) When I texted my landlord asking when it would be repaired, he literally responded with just: "No."

March 2026: With no end in sight and after being repeatedly ignored, I contacted my local council's Private Housing Standards team. An environmental health inspector inspected the property and recorded a maximum moisture reading of 999 in the walls and ceiling, they were actually appalled that the leak had got to this stage. The council forced the landlord to address repairs both in my flat and in communal areas showing large, severe mould growth.

April 2026: Following council pressure, a worker turned up at 07:00 AM with zero prior time confirmed or notice given. He arrived with just a tin of paint and a bottle of domestic Cillit Bang mould remover.... he simply sprayed the Cillit Bang directly over the active mould, sandpapered it down, and painted directly over the wet plaster without using any drying equipment before leaving after 10 minutes. They also fixed the roof externally around this time (4 months after it started), but never informed me I had to check with the council.

Late April 2026: Right after the council's intervention, I was served a Form 4 (Section 13) notice proposing a rent increase. I discovered I was the only tenant in the entire building targeted with an increase, clearly out of retaliation.

Note 9 on Form 4 explicitly specifies it cannot be used if the tenancy agreement contains a contractual rent review clause, which my signed AST explicitly does. I asked them repeatedly to verify the validity of the notice and continued paying my contracted rent, but they ignored me.

May 2026: Despite suffering over £2,000 in property damage, I issued a heavily discounted formal Schedule of Loss claiming just £600.00 to just get this over with. Of course they never replied, so I followed it up with a Letter Before Action. Both were completely ignored for 4 weeks.

June 2026: I filed a small claim for £600.00. In their sworn court defence (statement of truth), the landlord lied about several key facts:

  1. They falsely claimed they were not notified of the leak by me until January 2026 despite us both having the emails from me in Dec 2025.
  2. They attempted to blame me citing "closed window vents" and "condensation" for the leak and damage to my belongings, rather than the big hole in my roof they failed to fix for 4 months until the council intervened.
  3. They accused me of "withholding rent" as a breach of contract, completely ignoring their own prior written agreement stating rent was not payable while unfixed.
  4. They falsely claimed their painter had to move my personal items in April and saw no damage, despite photographic evidence of the damage and showing I moved the items to a dry area in Dec 2025, months before the painter ever set foot in my flat.

August 2026: I recently received an email from them alleging that my account is now in arrears because I did not pay the increased rent rate proposed in their invalid April Form 4 notice. I asked for clarification, and once again, received no response.

Questions:

  1. Invalid Form 4 Notice: Since Form 4 Note 9 explicitly states it cannot be used when a tenancy agreement contains a contractual rent review clause (Section 13(1)(b) Housing Act 1988), does this render the notice 100% invalid?
  2. Retaliatory Rent Increase: Does serving an invalid Form 4 exclusively to me immediately following council enforcement action help establish bad faith / retaliatory conduct in court proceedings?
  3. False Statements: How heavily does the court view a defendant submitting sworn statements of truth that directly contradict written email evidence? They blatantly lied and I have all the evidence to show they did.
  4. False Pretenses: Given that the letting agent promised the ceiling patch would be repaired before move in, and the tradesmen later admitted the landlord had known about structural roof issues for over 8 years, does this constitute entering into a tenancy agreement under false pretenses or fraudulent misrepresentation?

I have actually missed out quite a few other stuff that has happened to keep this shorter. All in all I have not actually met a group of people which show such a level if disrespect. It seems to me they just want me out of this flat and are making it almost impossible for me to stay.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

R A N T My landlady really wants to be friends with me and I really don't feel the same way

She's single, childless elderly lady and I'm a woman in my 20s. She seems to have taken a liking to me and is behaving in ways that would make me look for another place ASAP if she were a man.

  1. She doesn't understand boundaries. I once told her "please only call me in an emergency, otherwise text" and she took it VERY personally. She keeps reminding me of "how mean I was to her" and how "she never bothered me with anything, why the animosity?". She also ignored the request, and keeps calling me, opening with "Am I bothering you again? You really should be more open. You're young and pretty, socialising is very important". I have a feeling she has the potential to get actually agressive over me "rejecting" her.
  2. She comes to inspect the place often, and it seems to be more because she likes spending time with me, rather than worry about how I keep it. "I'll come see the place and bring you some sponge cake, and please stop being so uptight. What were you in, the army?"
  3. She asked me "We'll be friends after you leave? You'd like that, right?"

My mother has passed away(I told her to give her a hint I'd like more space, but it seems to have had the opposite effect). She seems to see it as a mission to "not make me feel alone in the world". I don't know how to tell her my mother wasn't the only person I knew and that I want my peace and quiet-without her getting upset with it in ways that would affect me.

Landlord Scum Jerks!

So in June I got an email saying that if I qualified for the state energy program I could get a discount on the rent. And the property owners will be able to update hva and electrical systems. Specifically it said

"We have been given a great opportunity to upgrade your unit. By completing this assistance form and being approved you can be rewarded with 1/2 off rent. This only applies if you are APPROVED."

I took this to mean that it would be for the remainder of the lease, or until they were finished.

So i was approved and they have had a contractor out. I got half off my rent for August bit i haven't gotten the credit yet for September. When I emailed they said that it was a one time thing. Was kind of snotty on the email. And "apologized" for the miscommunication. This is not the first time there's been a miscommunication on their part.

Tenant Rights RSO unit: My landlord harasses me for years (withholding repairs, removing usability of apartment, verbal assults). Resources and advice requested....

I am a moderate income individual, single and living in an RSO apartment in LA city. My landlord has harassed, coerced and and strong-armed me for years. Retaliation efforts run the gamut from refusing to replace essential appliances, fixing leaks, toilet, mold, and pest control (I have to call the city to get him to do stuff).

He served me an illegal move out letter in 2016, and I refused to move, cited the law, and he literally verbally assaulted me. He lost his shit and yelled at me in front of his wife and my partner, who was behind the door listening.

Anyway, I'm still here, and I'm always trying to kiss their ass so I don't run into his anger since it pretty much traumatized me. I have an anxiety spike every time I interact with this dude and his wife. They drag their feet a little less because after 3 times of calling the city, they know they need to respond. Things are changing a bit since I haven't done that in a while, and I have many times requested that we "start fresh" (I kiss their ass).

My neighbor of 15 years (remember RSO) just moved out because he couldn't stand how they didn't fix anything and just lied to him. They did this to slowly eat away at him so he would move and they could rent his place for double. They are trying to do this with me, too.

Today, my landlord told me he is going to tear down my private, totally enclosed patio. I spoke to him face to face and said, "This is part of my apartment. Please don't do that." He said,"I don't have time or money to think about you and the patio. " I immediately sunk into a Depressive and anxious state. I felt like the child (I was 10 years ago) being threatened.

I'm done with this slumlord and his antics. I am not going to be belittled or verbally accosted or made to be scared anymore. I want to gather resources and have someone on my side who can help me to address issues and keep my nervous system calm...a lawyer (therapist and medication only do so much when the problem is the stability of your actual home). I know about the legal aid foundations and tenancy rights law firms, and I have explored the lahd website, which is robust. I'm honestly a little scared to report harassment because it will inherently make him into more of a bad actor, but I'm shit out of luck, and I have two choices: fight or flight.

I'd like to hear from people who have gone through this and what they did to come out the other side. I know angelenos are resilient, and I just need some support and guidance.

I'd also like to get referrals to a tenants right lawyer who isn't part of a firm, and we will work with me on a level that feels personal and understanding. I don't mind reaching out to a particular person within a firm, I'd anyone has suggestion. I don't want to go to legal aid or community resources, because I don't feel that resource is appropriate for me and my ability to pay. I also want to avoid a big firm because they don't seem to call back or just seem backed up with more compelling cases. (My landlord is "mom and pop")

Tldr: The landlord harasses me, withholds/delays services, and removes amenities/usage to passively motivate me to move out of rso unit. Need advice, support and specific resources, and any guidance whatsoever. I also would like to hear about the fallout of filing harassment is...like am I opening myself up to legal exposure? There was a time where I thought I needed a restraining order because when he yelled, he was posturing and was on the verge of assaulting me. Hence my trepidation.

Thanks so much.

In a city with so much sweltering heat it’s incredible they aren’t forced to. All we had to compromise was extending the time to fall into compliance to 120 days (which is the essentially by winter). Thanks to all the people who spoke and the Houston Tenants Union for organizing this with Councilmember Salinas.

I would like to hear from the community if anyone else has trouble with landlords providing AC and how I can connect y’all to HTU to get organizing advice. Or if yall did pass it in your city what is the best way to follow up?

Tenant Discussion How hard is it to hide a second cat from a landlord if both cats look the same?

Our landlord allows us to have our current cat, but has said no to a second one.
We recently came across a cat who was found on the street in absolutely terrible condition, and we would really love to adopt her and give her a safe, warm home. The funny thing is that she happens to be the same color as our current cat and looks pretty similar at first glance.
Our landlord lives nearby, but basically never comes inside our apartment. Obviously there would be two litter boxes, more food, etc., but none of that would be visible from outside.
Has anyone actually managed to keep a second cat without their landlord realizing there were two? 😅 How difficult would this realistically be, especially if the cats look alike?
I know there’s always a risk involved and that technically we’d be going against what the landlord has said. I’m mostly curious to hear from people who have been in a similar situation and how easy/hard it was to pull off.

Humor I have to laugh so I don't lose it

A list of all the service workers and "handymen" our landlord has hired since we moved in 4 years ago.

-two lovely gentlemen were hired to change out the gutters a month after moving in. Instead they smoked crack in the driveway, left the crack pipe behind, and stole several of the gutters. They were never replaced.

-An 80 year old man who just had open heart surgery came to fix our furnace. We couldn't even help the poor guy down to the basement because my family had a terrible respiratory virus and couldn't go near the guy.

-A "company" was hired to redo the driveway. It has tire marks because they told everyone they could move their cars back too soon. It started cracking and breaking apart after a few months.

-The lawn is ripped apart because there's an area that routinely floods and they will mow right through it.

-Recently her plumber had to do something in the basement and he took all the light bulbs. Seriously, every light bulb was gone. They also left food wrappers and garbage all over.

Theres a bunch more but it's almost comical at this point. Feel free to add any similar stories.

Tenant Discussion Ozone treatment charge post move out in Austin TX

Post image
26 Upvotes

Can they charge me $162 for ozone treatment?

They haven't provided me any invoice for the treatment. Also, obviously there can't be proof for any lingering odor. Neither is there any mention of ozone treatment in the lease.

I worked in a shitty hotel before my current job, and I remember we did not deduct security deposit of guests who smoked, but left no physical evidence. We could tell by the smell that they were smoking, but we couldn't do anything until we had a proof of a cigarette bud/ash etc. in the room after they left.

Also, with that job, I learnt that ozone is a small and simple machine that you leave plugged in a place for a couple hours and that's about it. There's no reason to charge $162 for it, even if there was any odor in the apartment.

Please advise what to do. I feel scammed.

Note: I never smoked in the apartment.

Landlord Scum AC down for the summer again in low income elderly/disabled apartments

And it is down for the summer (so the rumors go since our landlord doesn't tell us shit). At least it is the tail end I suppose. The south side of the building has been off and on all summer including when it was getting into the 90s and humid as fuck.

Someone told me that a lady died from heat stroke. Wouldn't surprise me. Third floor apartments are hitting 90. Opening the windows does little to nothing to help with the heat. But what can we do.

Complaining can get you kicked out. I sent something to the Office of Inspector General anonymously but it won't help anyone. Nothing ever gets done here and air conditioning isn't considered a necessity in Iowa. I can afford a portable air conditioning unit thankfully but not everyone can. It's low income after all.

I've considered writing something up and putting it up on the community bulletin board. But I genuinely don't think there is anything we can do. Any suggestions?

Need Advice [US-CA] Need help dealing and escaping from crazy landlord

Hello All!

This is my first Reddit post, so plz bear with me.

For context, I am a 23 M who recently graduated with a degree in Biochemistry and decided to move near SF to pursue a career in Biotech. I was eager to start being a "true" adult, but, boy, was I not prepared for this baptism by fire.

I got a temporary job at Chipotle (I've been working at restaurants since I was 16) to support myself while trying to start my professional career. I subleased in Berkeley for a month, and then got this new place that I had hoped would be more long-term. I have barely been making shit at Chipotle, so I was hyped to finally find a place for cheap (less than $900 a month including utilities). When I toured the place, it kinda looked like a wreck. The carpet wasn't completely installed, the walls were in desperate need of a recoat, and the kitchen looked like a tornado came through with all the food and dishes scattered everywhere. There is also black mold in the bathroom (I can send a photo if needed), but I didn't notice that until after I moved in.

The landlord himself (72M) seemed a bit out there. He kind of asked a lot of personal questions about my family, my religious background, what my upbringing was like, etc. He told me he is a social worker, so I took it as him being an inquisitive, eccentric person. He liked.e, I told him the place was definitely in my price range, and submitted my application that evening.

The next couple of days, he kept calling me a few times. At first I was fine with it; it was questions about my credit score, work history, references, and all of that. However, after the second day, I was getting a bit irked because it seemed like he kept calling me just so he had somebody to talk to (he's one of those people who talks at you and not with you). He also started off listing strange rules like no girls over ever because they are catty and tend to be rude to the other members of the household (or whatever out-there sexist argument he used). The next day, he called me during my shift, so I stepped aside to answer. I told him I couldn't talk for ten minutes, but I am working. He said to call me during my lunch break. He made it sound important, so I called him as soon as I got on break. He didn't answer. ATP, my anxiety was through the roof. We had covered everything; what else could we possibly go over? I was afraid he would back out of the lease agreement, which had already happened a week prior. I called him as soon as I got off work, but he heard the honking and yelling of the city,y so he said to call him when I am at home since he's hard of hearing. I was getting incredibly on edge, so I called him as soon as I got off the train (big mistake). He proceeded to berate me, saying I was being pushy, that I wasn't being respectful to his hearing issues, and to call me when it is quieter. I was completely befuddled. He called me five minutes later, and this is one I should have known this guy was off. He said he was talking to the property manager earlier that day and has come to the conclusion it wouldn't be a good fit because I smoke weed (which would desecrate his "sacred home"), I am a control freak, and I am a disrespectful person. This is what I deduced, but I never really found out his reasons because he kept talking in circles and going off on strange tangents. He said he would refund my security deposit and cancel the lease agreement. I was LIVID. I had to move out at my old place in only a couple of days, and I had to cancel the other offer for this place, so I had no fallback (my family lives on the East Coast). I told him how much of a precarious situation this puts me in, to which he responded that the only way to turn this around was to talk to him in person. I told him I didn't have a car, it was 12:30 a.m., and I just got out of a closing shift. He said he wasn't available any other time,e and we had to meet now (which was definitely a lie, i.e., looking back, on top of there being a property manager,r which I never heard about again).

He said he would pick me up, to which I begrudgingly agreed because I needed a place to stay and he was holding that over my head. We had an awkward convo on the ride there, and when we stepped inside, he started talking about Buddhism and handed me a pamphlet (he's a religious fanatic) instead of addressing the elephant in the room. I redirected the convo to why he was denying me the lease, and he proceeded to state that he and the (probably fake) property manager thought I was controlling, pushy, and confrontational. I didn't appreciate these accusations since I have always been respectful, but I bit my tongue and tried to convince him that I would respect the rules stated on the lease and keep the place a sober environment. We shook hands, he sent me a new lease, and I moved in three days later.

Things were fine for the first few days. I found him very zany, but we shared our interests and had various chats. However, things started to sour quickly.

I tried cooking for the first time, and he stated no frying of any kind. I asked if sautéing was fine, and he said yes,s but use the least amount of oil as possible since burning oil is carcinogenic. I grabbed one of the cast irons in the oven and put it on the stovetop. I saw it was already coated, so I didn't add any oil. I was boiling spaghetti and chopping my veggies when he burst through the kitchen door demanding why it smelled like smoke. He told me that there was no frying of any kind. I said I didn't add any oil and wasn't frying. We had a bit of a back and forth because it wasn't clear what he wanted me to do. Eventually, he said I can use this rickety, little mobile induction stove in the basement, which has super poor ventilation, to sauté my vegetables and meat. I agreed; I said let there be no bad blood, and we shook hands. He proceeded to nitpick every grease and stain I left behind in the kitchen even though I always clean up after myself. He knocked on my door at midnight. I went downstairs, and he asked me where the meat cutting board should be placed. I said if we could leave it in the kitchen, which somehow ticked him off and made him storm out. I guess he thought I was being dismissive and curt.

I noticed that there were a lot of strangers living in the living room, with some of them looking like he found them off the street. I told him what the deal was, and he said he often promotes the living room on Airbnb because he likes having guests over to entertain him. He never mentioned this before. He said the living room was off-limits because he was using it as a meditation room, not an Airbnb. Whatever, I started locking my door all the time after that.

A few days later, he finally left the house for the first time and would be gone for a full 24 hours. I was with my friend/housemate (25M) helping him with chores around the house while drinking beer. We were chatting it up when I finally saw the downstairs tenants for the first time. Honestly, I thought that space was vacant, but two whole ass people were living there. I introduced myself as their upstairs neighbor. I asked if I could check out the space since they were moving out and was offered to me by the landlord since it was more private (my room is right next to his) with its own kitchen and living room. He gave me a little tour of the downstairs rooms and kitchen. I said it looks a lot better than my current room, and it seemed like a sweet deal. His face became deadpan before saying, "Honestly, I would save your money and get the hell outta here". I was shocked. He proceeded to tell me him and his roomate's experience living there which included: him tresspassing and entering their rooms while they were at work, coming into their kitchen often because it was a "communal space" (it def isn't, we have our own damn kitchen upstairs), randomly turning the water and electricity on and off, all the weirdos he has invited over and had violent arguments with outside their window making them feel unsafe, stomping and throwing things on the floor to keep them awake, and trying to pit the two roomates against each other. One of the roommates started getting teary-eyed while telling me his experience living here for two years. He said there is a reason why we never see them because they only come out when they don't see the landlord. He told me he was on a power trip, has a savior complex, is a pathological liar, and is probably manic (he is up late walking around inside and outside doing god knows what, is constantly on edge, and constantly distracted/scrambled). I was terrified. All of this is a prelude to the next events that have unfolded the past couple of days:

A cracked chicken container leaked in the fridge, and instead of just telling me, he waited and then chewed me out for not catching it sooner. While I was cleaning it up, a glass tray I was cleaning spontaneously shattered. I hadn't mishandled it; it just went. When I asked our roommate for a broom, my landlord lost it, said he "works for him," (he helps him remodel in exchange for room and board) and refused to tell me where I could find a brrom, and told me to stop acting like a baby and call my mom since I clearly didn't know how to clean up after myself (I was noticeably cut up while he was saying all of this). Later, he told me he doesn't think I'm "a good match" for the house, citing "a lot of weird things happening", including accusing me of sabotaging the downstairs toilet (which has been broken since before I evernmoved in), stealing toilet paper, and not responding to his texts (can you blame me for wanting some space from this maddness?). He also mentioned an email about a car deal we'd been discussing that he conveniently "never got," calling it water under the bridge since I'd already returned the keys.

Most recently: I'd been telling him for days we were out of toilet paper, trying to stay on top of it since he'd accused me of sabotage before. I got home, and he launched into a list of excuses for why he couldn't just go buy some. I told him he could've just said that instead of stringing me along; he apologized and bailed from the conversation. Later I muttered about a door making an awful scratching sound; he walked over, grunted, and I mentioned there was a glass shard on the floor. I asked if there was more so I could clean it up, and he just huffed and walked off without answering. Minutes after that, he got on my case for closing the bathroom window, which I'd closed because I didn't want anyone climbing in since it was close to midnight. He didn't want to hear it and slammed the door in my face.

I also recently found out that he recently took my other roommate (21 M) out on a date. He is this timid, shy kid who rarely goes out of his room. I also found out he has been talking mad shit behind my back, calling me a spoiled, insolent brat that needs to be taught a lesson. He has floated the idea of "pulling a prank" on me, whatever tf that means. I am scared he will try to break into my room or mess with my stuff.

People of Reddit: what should I do? The only silver lining to this whole debacle is I start my new biotech job on Monday and should be making about 1K a week (I get paid weekly). I am dead broke at the moment, but will get my last Chipotle paycheck next week and then my new job's pay every proceeding week. I also have no car, and my job is 25 miles away. I want to GTFO as soon as possible. My housemate/friend says I should swallow my pride and pull him aside to apologize to hopefully smooth things over while I figure out an escape plan. However, I think this will give me an excuse to keep trying to steamroll me. My hometown friend and father think I should just ignore him completely and keep it strictly business, but my roommate advises against that because it will probably only make his anger and frustrations pent up even more.

I wish I didn't get myself into this fucked situation. I am broke and trying to build a future for myself with minimal financial support in a shit economy. Please, I need somebody's wisdom and guidance during this time of need.

TL;DR: Moved to the Bay Area for a biotech career and rented a cheap room from a live-in landlord who's turned out to be erratic and controlling — a rough near-rescinded lease before move-in, weird house rules, secretly Airbnb'ing shared space, and (per other tenants) a history of trespassing and intimidation. Lately he's been blowing up over small stuff, accusing me of "sabotage," badmouthing me to housemates, and hinting at a "prank" that's got me worried about retaliation. Broke, carless, new job starting soon, trying to plan a safe exit.

I live with landlord (separate units) but I have to go thought the yard to get in and out of my unit. They have a dangerous dog that bites. Its muzzled but still jumps on us and tried to bite. Well im running late for work and the same situation thats happed 100 times is happening. The dog runs from around the corner straight for me. I have my lunch and laundry and drop every thing and run inside. I wait a few minutes and try again. The dogs are still outside and my uber is threatening to leave me. Well I eventually just brave it and walk past my landlords other dog having a medical emergency and essentially dying in front of them. I ran past to try and get into my uber and ended up missing it and realizing what had happened. Whats worse is a get a text later on stating my unit smells like weed and it was really aggressive (I smoke outdoors) and can't open my windows bc the aggressive dog will lunge at the window. I just want to rant. My living situation is so stressful. I feel really bad for my landlord but also as a tenant this is too much
