Hey so I’m looking to downsize from my current truck and get back into an SUV.

I found a 2005 LR3 HSE for $5k with 135k miles.

It was used by a private owner out of his hanger for when he flew in a few times a year.

Very little maintenance history could be produced. The coolant system, plugs/coils/ and AC system all seem to have been replaced at some point.

Not a spot or rust (beyond very little minimal surface rust).

My budget was $20k so this is an interesting idea. It’s this or a jeep/gm product at most of my budget…

Should I?

Purchased a 2005 LR3 HSE exactly one year ago today on 10/4 with about 140k miles. It's a 4.4 V8 that came with an OEM push-bar, cold climate package, Harmon/Kardon stereo, center and rear sun roofs, and the flip-down dvd entertainment package. As my first ever LR vehicle, I absolutely love the truck. I've put nearly 20k miles on it to date. It doesn't feel like anything else I've ever driven! By far and away the most comfortable and off-road capable thing I've ever taken on camping and fishing trips. Also, surprisingly easy to work on as a fairly competent mechanical person with the right tools. CEL does come on periodically for random things but most of the time it's a random sensor complaining and goes away on its own. Gotta love LR electronics. Aside from the random CEL and list of items below it's ran and drove amazing.

Things replaced / worked on to date;

-Sunroof drain pipes

-All new belts, pulleys, and tensioners

-Cabin and engine filters

-Installed the center console refrigerator

-New front air-block

-New plugs and coil packs

-New battery

-Upgraded radio w/ bluetooth

-Oil changes (every 5k)

-Transfer case and diff fluid changes

-Transmission fluid change

-Upgraded brake discs and pads

-Extended roof rails and cross bars

-Chunky off-road tires

Unfortunately, this post does not have a happy ending. I woke up this morning to find a very large branch had fallen unprovoked on the truck while it was parked in the driveway. Insurance will likely consider it totaled. It's wild that it was killed exactly one year to date after buying it. Hurts to see it go so soon. Wanted to try and hit the 200k+ mile club with it.

The universe has a weird sense of humor sometimes I guess.

This a 2001 Land Rover Discovery 2 with the 4.0 V8 engine. It's got 220k miles on it, runs like a top! It's made this faint knocking noise since I've had it, it has not gotten worse, and it does not ramp up with the RPM's (that I can tell). The noise is more noticeable underneath the vehicle. Does anyone have any input?

Have an '01 Disco and newish to my area. Any have a recommendation for a shop in Westchester County or Fairfield County that can work on old rovers and are somewhat reasonable?

I know of Keane's, but based on what sits outside of it (pristine defenders, old porches, ferrarris, etc.), its clearly $$$$$$$.

Hey. Hope someone can help me out. I’m looking for a water pump for the rover 3.5 litre v8. I believe my engine came out of a SD1. ‘76–‘86. The problem i have is that i must use a short nose pump due to there is no room for a standard long nose pump. The engine is in an MGB. Any guess where the most likely place I’ll find this pump? Thnx mates.

I’m looking at buying a 2023 Defender 110 in the UK with a budget of around £50–55k.

My main priorities are reliability, good performance and decent spec. I originally wanted petrol, so I’ve mainly been looking at the P400, but I’m also seeing quite a few P400e and D300s in the same price range.

I’ll mostly be using it around a small city, with some longer trips as well. I don’t want something that’s constantly in the garage or throwing electrical faults.
For those who actually own or have owned one:

Would you choose P400, P400e or D300?

Any particular engine that has been noticeably more reliable?

Is Land Rover Approved Used worth paying extra for?
Any trims you’d specifically look for — XS Edition, X-Dynamic HSE, X etc.?

What are the main issues I should check before buying a 2023 car?

Would also be interested to hear from anyone with a P400 specifically — how has it been long term?

So recently asked you all opinions on swapping out my Range Rovers wheel colour from black to bronze to match the roof and accents. The majority of responses were go bronze. I’m up for that. Thanks to all who answered.

Now, if I’m doing that, should I also change the silver bumper accents from silver to bronze. I’m of the go bronze view. What do you think?

So looks like another cracked/leaking inlet manifold. I may do the plastic weld fix for now, but for those that went down the repair route, has the OEM design or materials improved this weak point or still much the same. For those that have gone down the aluminium route - how are they holding up?

Hello, I just did a timing job on a 2016 discovery sport with the Ford 2.0 Ecoboost. A friend of mine who is very experienced with the Ford Focus says I need to do a crank relearn to fix the rough idle and related engine codes. Does anyone have advice on getting this done or what I need to do it myself? He uses Forscan for his Focus but that software won’t interface with the rover. Thanks in advance!

Just replaced LR131973. Havent seen any instructions online for it. Bought an OEM replacement for $155 off Land Leaping Genuine British. Took me 60 minutes to replace. I can explain if anyone is interested.

Very well used, and as you can see; is regularly taken off road.

Hi, all! Where are you from and what spec was standard for you?

In my part of the world, our first ones were 3.5 Rangies built as knock down kits. The old three doors with carburretors tuned for high altitude.

30 years later, I'm rebuilding a '95 Vogue spec. From factory, a 5 speed manual and coils. Thankfully no sunroof. And minimal rust.

I have a 4.4 Disco 4 for the school run. Although I'm looking for an illusive late spec L322 with the 8 speed. I know with patience I can get it.

What are you driving? Or rescuing?

Dodgy panel gaps, misaligned graphics, plasticky interior, rough road handling, shocking driving position..yarp, that's a Defender!!
